The Holy Bible, which this was the lead single for, is an absolute masterpiece. Darkest and heaviest they got. Glad to hear you're digging this band whenever you're hearing their songs. Their infamous appearance on Top of the Pops for this is funny to watch, too. They're all miming except James who is singing live, and he's wearing the balaclava he's got over his face during the solo in this video. The crowd has no idea what's going on. At the time the BBC got the highest number of complaints they ever had for it!

Journal For Plague Lovers is my second favorite album after The Holy Bible, for this very reason; dark, heavy, littered with meaning and references.

The Manics definitely have that heavy/hard sound in their arsenal. The album this is off, The Holy Bible, is a masterpiece. It's a musical equivalent to Schindler's List though in the sense that while it is absolutely immense, it's not an album for every day.

If you're reacting to more Holy Bible tracks, make sure you have the lyrics in front of you. Apart from the raw music(I like another reacters idea that it sounds like they are playing with rusty strings), the lyrics are poetry, and knowing what is being sung really enhances the experience.

The holy bible is worth checking out - the UK versions rather than the more 'produced' US version whish shaved off the rough edges - it was recorded a twenty minute walk from here - but then again rockfield is only a 40 minute drive away - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockfield_Studios

The 'more produced' US version is better on quite a few songs if the truth is being told. And the band agreed. The first time they liked anything the US label did for them (the sods law is that for obvious reasons, they couldn't tour it). Lord Tom Algae was the producer of the US version I believe.
