I spent years looking for this song, a crazy search because i knew neither the title of the son nor the name of the group but i was sure it was essential for me to find it. One of the best songs I've ever hard. Finally I had to ask in a chat: does anybody know a song who says something like this: "in the beginning, when we were winning..." "and the singers are in flames"? at last finally somebody told me: "look for manic street preachers", and here I am, finally listening to this beauty at least once a week.

These are some of THE best chord changes i've ever heard in any song, any era. The way that the major/ minor chords keep on cascading over each other sounds like one big chorus throughout the whole song. It's too bad that thought is the enemy of popular music.....because the Manics are one hell of a thoughtful band.

This song is so much emotional that it can't be explained how really emotional it is, because you can't find the words to tell This track deserved more luck and attention, and the band too. The final part with that crescendo is something I never found in any other song (maybe just in Music by John Miles): that final part is something like the most beautiful dream you don't want to wake up from. I guess the Manics knew they were creating something out of the average, even if Nicky said, during an interview to NME, that "The Everlasting was just a giant mistake, in our career". He said that in 2001, just three years after the track was released. I've been listening to this song for 18 years and I never got bored. And I keep on listening. It's something I can't do without.

The gap that grows between our lives The gap our parents never had Stop those thoughts control your mind Replace the things that you despise Oh you're old I hear you say It doesn't mean that I don't care I don't believe in it anymore Pathetic acts for a worthless cause In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine But now unforgiven the everlasting Everlasting The world is full of refugees They're just like you and just like me But as people we have a choice To end the void with all its force So don't forget or don't pretend It's all the same now in the end It was set in a different life Destroys my days and haunts my nights? In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine But now unforgiving the everlasting Everlasting In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine Now unforgiving, the everlasting Everlasting But now unforgiving, the everlasting Everlasting

Maybe because I relate myself so much towards this song already since it was released 20 years ago, I have always had the feeling that this song is about our disconnection from each other. Relationships now-a-days have become so full of difficulties and as soon as there are problems, we let go in our endless sigh of easiness in everything, leaving those who really know what love is standing alone and on fire of everlasting desire to belong … together ...
@thuurmichels7633 күн бұрын
That guitar solo is harsh in sound, but doesn't take centre stage, as most solo's tend to do. It's there to drive home the climax of the song, that fantastic chorus. I understand that chorus more each day than I ever did back in the day. 🙌
