I’ve been a social worker for 12 years as well. What shocked me the most was that I became a social worker with a plan of working in child welfare. I literally avoided classes related to geriatric, medical, or hospice care (as much as I could) because I never anticipated going into those fields. I very quickly burned out in child welfare, specifically CPS, and fell into hospice while looking for a position in a different child welfare setting. Turns out I was made for hospice social work. I absolutely love my job and feel like I make a positive difference so much more often than I ever did in child welfare. I love that social work gives you the opportunity to work in so many different fields and I encourage new social workers or social work students to take advantage of the different classes offered when obtaining your BSW because you never know where you will find your specific niche. Love your thoughts on “making a difference.” I think that’s what we all hope for and I agree that, as a social worker, you have to take the little victories and know that sometimes you make a difference and never even know it. ❤️

Thank you for sharing this...I agree with you, it is only by exploring different areas of social worker that you can decide where you passion lies. Back in 1991, I was a licensed social worker in the Ohio community mental health system. Because of all of the paperwork, my boss joked she was going to replace the social workers with secretaries. Just to be honest, I left the field soon after. I never finished my masters in counseling and went to work in retail and I.T.

Thanks for this manicka i'm just starting to be a social worker but for community service for disability i did volenteer work for it and i like it cause people don't know that social worker is a very must needed thing and its sad that they don't get paid much.

I love this video...it better than other videos I watched....I got to say that every profession is affected by politics either way (pos&neg). Government if the main problem to fix social issues. Reminds me the doctor who never cures a patient, if he does, he looses a client.

I'm currently working as a domestic service provider after being a school drop out after high school but while here the kind of unfair treatment from a foreign country has helped me recover my life , have more focus and slowly I started being an example to many. I always make myself available for those wanting to be heard for really it makes me happy knowing that I became a change in someone's life..I have always had passion for business and helping others but I didnt know how to go about this just now i had asked a friend from my country to tell me more and the curiosity brought me here I'm so glad to experience this and cant wait to resume studies in a career that brings me joy..How I wish I can connect with someone already in the field it doesnt matter where he or she is from it would really make my moments since sharing is my thing...Thank you

You make a great point. You have to be an Ambassador to all parties involved in social services In order for things to go smoothly. This is difficult because you have to teach parents or care takers without offending them. You also have to be able to document the process of how each situation was handled and the outcomes of the situation. It can be hard. If you are in this field I have the utmost respect for you. I also have hopes that all of you do not get discouraged by the challenges you face. You got this !

I'm an amature social worker helping a friend get his life together. He's got a job opportunity tommarrow his weakness is moderate a.d.d, improper scheduling of jobs and expecting somebody to be available to get him to work, and not remembering past mistakes; putting himself at risk of repeating history of missing interviews..

I've been vacillating in my choice of career for years now. I even decided to go to technical college for a few years until I figure it out, and this has always been my dream I was just to afraid to go for it. My father was a social worker before he retired, and he's told me a lot of what you have. I still feel like this is the job that I have to do and I really appreciate this video for helping consolidate my decision.

Thank you for this video. I’m a senior biology major & have always wanted to be a pediatric oncology physician, but lately I’ve been feeling like this path isn’t for me. I’d love to go into medical social work so I can still work with those patients & their families while still being able to create work-life balance.

Thank you for such an informational video Manicka. I have one year left in my bachelor degree for psychology and I'm starting to think about possible routes to take post graduation. I am torn between LMFT, LCSW, and LPCC. Something keeps drawing me towards social work! I am so glad I watched your video so I can get a better understanding of what to expect going into the social work field. I can tell it's a lot of work, but I bet its such a rewarding profession to be in.

I graduated from HS in 2016 and now in 2020 I’m still in school trying to figure out what I want to do as a career. I was always suggested to be a social worker but I was very ignorant and thought all my job would consist of is ripping children apart from their families. I’ve been to hospitals where people would curse out and even try to get violent with social workers for just doing their job. It’s something I’m still deciding, though...
