One of the most often complaints that you will hear about Linux is that there are too many distros that all do the same thing. These complaints do have some validity, but at the same time, I feel these complaints miss the point. This morning I'm drinking my coffee and trying to decide on a dessert to go with it...

The "too many distros" problem is only a problem for those looking to make the switch to Linux... Like if you went to buy a hostess cake and you never tasted them before. They all appear different but you don't know that they taste the same until you try them all...

including developers wishing to ship binary-only software, for those the "too many distros" is real issue, also the instability of the ABIs, etc... and lot of commercial SW wants to be closed source binary only. I would even guess the "too many distros" is more about the binary incompatibility than about new users having too many choices. But who cares. Big part of free SW developers care about technology and rights over their SW, while supporting non free SW is like something secondary, or even "I don't care at all" thing, so it's like that and it will stay like that.

It would be as if they just gave you the ingredients and said you can just put it together yourself with any shape or decoration you want. But most people don't want to be making the cakes themselves. That's why they are buying the prepackaged products. They all have slight differences that some people prefer over the other options but none of those people would want to have to take the cakes and rebuild them into their preferred shape. No matter how many tools you have to customize your OS, not everyone is going to want to put in all that work to do so. Having it prepackaged just the way we like it is very much preferred.

They're not the same. Each one has a different Flag ship edition with custom settings that would take the average user weeks or months to setup themselves. If you can find the one that is closest to your needs and go from there, I think that's very convenient. Yes, they may be the same under the hood, but what you end up using can be very different. Switched Ubuntu to Manjaro to EndeavoursOS 2 years ago. Going strong with EndeavoursOS since then. EndeavoursOS is much more agile with almost no limiters put on whereas Manjaro has 2 weeks hold cycle and their app store (pamac-all got orphaned few months ago) ... EndeavoursOS is basically Arch Configured with all necessary packages and settings with only 2 -3 apps that are additional and you can disable them (they are upfront about it) No hate for Manjaro, but I love the approach of EndeavoursOS more. Also, it was Manjaro that helped me get acquainted with all Arch commands back in the day, So I am thankful to Manjaro too.

I agree on both. The same point applies. Presentation is a huge part of the overall experience. For most folks, life is best with variety. It's a psychological thing. The only deviations for me are at the extremes of the spectrum, beginners and experts. Beginners might fare better with certain variants, and this with specific use cases may fare better with something geared for their use. A musician may prefer one with musical apps. A student with another set, an artist... well you get the point. For the rest of us, variety...

This was one of the hardest things for me as a new Linux user. Of course it was easy to pick a beginner friendly distro like Ubuntu, but getting more advanced it would progressively get harder to decide on a distro. I believe that Linux strongly represents the paradox of choice. As much as I love Arch, in certain situations it’s just not practical. But when you have so many options as you’ve said that are essentially the same, then what purpose is there to be different? Not including the differences between Arch, Debian, and RHEL for instance, but the derivatives of each. Perhaps that’s just my personal feeling of being overwhelmed by too many similar choices. I think that’s why I use Arch. Instead of cake or brownies, I’ll just be the baker and make whatever the hell I want.

In the beginning it is quite overwelming, a LOT of distros, people trying to convince me what was the best and all that, and then having my dissapointments with some distros (Manjaro comes to mind), and I stuck with Zorin OS for a while, but then I decided to jump to Fedora, and this thing is rock solid. Later down the road, I decided to ditch Zorin OS from my laptop as well, and went with Pop_OS due to its simplicity and gnome implementation. So I have two diferent distros for two diferent things. It is all a matter of perspective, and what you figure that is good for you, and don't let elitists either try to guide you or bring you down. And to all the people out there: You can get used to Linux and create your workflow in a matter of weeks. And if you need a specific Windows tool that doesn't run under Wine, then run a Windows VM and you are all good. I know people fret about keeping it FOSS, and to go for open-source always, but VMWare Player is a life-saver, and their drivers are fantastic.

Isn’t this video a bit contrary to your “will the future have FEWER Linux distros” video? I thought you made some good points there. In this analogy, why can’t we just get those 4 basic ingredients and choose if we want a ding Dong or ho-ho and have all the effort generally focused on improving the 4 ingredient base?

I recently switched to Linux on both my desktop and laptop. Laptop distro is fedora KDE since it’s intel graphics but I’m still currently trying to find a permanent distro for my desktop which has Nvidia graphics. The fact that there are so many choices can sometimes be a bit stressful IMO.

They just do things a little different. Underlying foundation is the same. I like choices! Arch-based just give me Arco. Debian-based just give me Mint. But some days I prefer something new for my sweet-tooth. Some days I'll even bake my own. Life is good.

Distro Tube, I have no problem with the number of distro's as much as I do with the multitude of different package managers and terminal commands that seem to change drastically . You are so good at teaching Linux, have you ever tackled a simple, beginners guide to understanding the terminal language used in the different package managers like ARCH opposed to Debian, opposed to ubuntu, etc etc we have YAY commands, we have pacman commands, we have so many .For five years I used Ubuntu, Debian based distros and primarily still do.I was used to straight forward SUDO commands. Then I downloaded the recent Garuda Linux with the Pacman manager, and found that there is an entirely different command structure used in the Terminal. This can be confusing and frustrating to new users trying to escape Microsoft and Apple HELL. If you have already done a video on this can you point me to the link?. If not ..I would LOVE to hear you do a show on this. You are such a good damn teacher I never fail to take something away from your video's.

It's not different it's just a different package manager. That's the only thing different.

I don't think many will disagree that more choice is more better, except for newbies. For them, and them alone, the amount of choices is daunting and I can understand the argument in that case. For such circumstances, I can only say, read a guide on best newbie distros and make sure it's within a year or two of having been published. My goto recommendation is Mint, but I've been told Fedora is a good choice a lot lately. So I'd say try one or both of them first.

I like a wide choice. However, the origin should play a role. Are Ding Dongs and Zingers from the same manufacturer? I had to go back to pure Debian, unfortunately, because some installation scripts use lsb_release -ac to be installed only on special distros. It would be desirable for me that the distros would indicate whether they are still compatible with their base and that you could also see this with commands like lsb_release -ac

100% agree. People seem to view Linux as Windows. In another words "Another product". If Linux was a product for sale, the diversity would not serve the product. But Linux is not a product, so it's just wrong when people say "Linux is too diverse". Freedom is diverse. The Linux landscape is a good symbolic representation of how a sound capitalist market should be. I am a happy Debian user. But i do applaud all other distros!

Sometimes I want a Ring Ding, and sometimes I want a Yodel. By the way, the Hostess Ding Dong is a cheap knockoff of the Drake's Ring Dings. Ring Dings were my favorite back in the day when they used to come individually wrapped in foil.

Good analogy, but to be clear, Manjaro is more like the Ubuntu of Arch, with its own repositories and packages, and therefore is more of a Little Debbie donut compared to Zinger of Endeavor

if you remember back in the day, when the first live distros appeared they came with multiple desktop options, KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc. so today distros having multiple installation media for different desktops is just dumb. But they do it because the installations have become so big they can't fit in a DVD anymore, but this is also dumb because most people will install Linux using USB, the DVD size should be an option, yes but it should be exclusively for installation and avoid the live DVD. I say this because the one thing Distros should do, is all the distros based on something else should join forces with the OG distro, join resources and effort invested, they can make the configuration a script to modify the base distro or can be part of the installation process. EndeavourOS exists because the DIY concept of Arch is just a gimmick, it should be part of the installation process with something like calamares and for the people who think "oh I learned too much doing it" well, the whole process can be a section of the Arch wiki and thats it. you don't need anything else. Can be one of the options.
