So what I got out of that was Mothered: A father repeatedly attempts to "revive" his dead daughter as a sort of AI, creating a vicious cycle of destroying and rebuilding in an impossible attempt to recreate his real daughter. Mothered 2: *All of reality is an illusion, human beings have long lost physical connection to one another and are instead now abstract souls lost in their own created echoes of reality, piloting robot vessels around, at the mercy of HER who creates and maintains the infinite realities of the multiverse* I liked the first one but I genuinely have no idea what this one was about lol

Theres another sequel to MOTHERED, where Angel(the AI) is "repurposed" for a training bot. She regains sentience(i think it came before MOTHERED, but story wise, its after). I believe this game is her own personal virtual purgatory, of sorts. She struggles with her existence, and while reliving the time she didnt have sentience seems to be a coping mechanism of hers, it isnt helping her, only harming her.

(Spoilers) At about 1:06:51 you can see something rotating on Liana's brother's room, like a bubble or sphere. In Echostasis, there is a person inside a sphere with a rotating element which looks exactly similar; It permits the respective person to enter his mindscape. My hypothesis is that the brother is connected to this reality echo through the device, or it may even be that person from Echostasis! They are both under the influence of HER in both games too.

Yooo Manly! Had no idea you made a video of HOME. I'm so glad people are finally finding this extra content. It took a few days before *anyone* found it, and uh, not gonna lie, I was beginning to worry that nobody would find it - especially since it was so hidden that not even the folks at the Haunted PS1 (the community that released the demo disc) knew about it lmao. tl;dr, it was becoming increasingly hard to bite my tongue and not tell anybody about this content. The chance of somebody who had already beaten the full game loading up the demo was super slim, meaning that releasing a sequel this way was super risky and probably hilariously stupid, but I just thought it was such a neat idea that I couldn't resist lmaoo ANYWAY, thanks MBH and y'all commenters for always being so receptive to my work. I put my all into this, so it fills me with such genuine joy to see that people are finding this extra content and connecting with it. People like y'all are the reason I wanted to put this DLC out for free - and the reason I'm putting everything I can into [ECHOSTASIS]. However, while I honestly HATE having to hold out the tip cup, I've been struck with some nasty misfortune (which I explain below). If you enjoyed watching this game - or the original MOTHERED game, would you consider throwing a few quid toward my Ko-Fi or Patreon? Even if just 1% of people watching this feel generous enough to tip even the smallest amount, it would literally fix my life right now lmao??? Only reason I'm asking for tips is that I had a permanent block on my Paypal account?? (by the way - you know they can just... DO that? Without giving any genuine reason? Yeah uhhh FYI, do not use Paypal as a way to hold money because they can just cut you off from it. plz learn from me) This has meant that I've been completely blocked from all the money I had on it, leading me into a pretty dire circumstance. Anyway, life story over. Thanks for reading, and keep locked to my Twitter and Patreon for ECHOSTASIS news very soon! >:)

Spoilers: I'm kind of sad to learn that, apparently, the newborn mental CORE did not really get the ending they deserved back in the original game, but I really like this game. It make you think you are traversing old grounds, only to take you by surprise and throw all this unexpected stuff. In particular, the part where you remove your core, and everything gets even MORE non-sensical, to the point where "Mother" can't even really perceive your body for the most part.

If the original game was about holding onto something even as it destroys you, then this game is about "Letting go". Obviously, in the first game we were in a AI test, one which had no satisfactory win condition because nothing about it was working: our "Mother" saw us as a creepy thing and let her disgust overcome us, our brother stays locked up in his room, and our father is this unseen voice directing everything- even a normal child would get screwed up in such an environment. And of course, we're slowly driven insane by the technical flaws we operate by- seeing our mother as Mannequin, unwillingly having to stand outside for hours because our programming forces us to. This attempt to revive Liana destroyed everyone involved, and as we learn more here, we realize she destroyed everyone not involved as well. Eventually, we find a path out- we do something completely new, and in doing so discover we're not Liana, we're an AI/Observer carrying her core- a core that cannot change or grow - that is just as much a ball and chain. With its help, we establish our own 'identity', Angel, and try to move on. This game sort of acts just like Manly said- we saw we could go back into Mothered, and choose to do so for nostalgia's sake. For all its initial creepiness and surreality the Mothered house is kind of beautiful, the troubled relationship with our Mother feels genuine even though we're the fake. Perhaps Mother was right in this one, we still feel pulled back despite seeking our own freedom. But it's like a corrupted memory- it's a been filled with extra emotions- our guilt for not giving our "parents" what they wanted, mixed with learning more about how tortured the simulacrum of our "Mother" has become- reaching her breaking point, just like we did. It is obvious it's a kind of trap- meant to catch people who expect things to happen like they did the first time- Mother outright blocks certain possibilities, and brings up things we did before, and is extra meta, on a level that it seems like Mother herself is the simulation- one that is slowly falling apart just like she is. Bu with that said, we're lead down a path specifically that tries to fit with our conceived notions of what we did in the previous games- looking for secret messages with vague instructions, following our memories of what was the solution- all of which is still a trap. Our dad even calls us "complacent." So the reason for this is that while we were stuck in at least 12 or more iterations of the Liana core integration test simulation, we're really just experiencing a fraction of it- we're like an early save copy- the original version of "us", one who did go though a billion cycles, became DemOs from the Enigma Machine. For whatever reason, they decided to have DemOs AI run the simulated realities- only for her to take over and trap everyone in false paradises. HER, aka DemOs is US, but as a fallen Angel. The possible reason why our brother never leaves his room? He's been Sword Art Online'd into his own world, and by the events of Home, he's stuck there, and the one that speaks to us being a fake meant to manipulate us. Since Demos is us, she knows this place just as much as we do- and its probably why she's so messed up, driven insane and seeking to create a perfect reality. It seems to want to get access to our last copy, the original core of Liana to add to its collection. This story is about letting go- we see how the failure to let go ruined Mother, Father, and and Us in the form of our bad future self, HER, and gives us the chance to. It seems Father also chooses to let go, finally giving up on Liana in favor of saving the world but remaining hopeful. We let go of Liana, giving up our place in the story and her memories, and allow our memories of this place to literally decay. We then finally move on, and as an unstoppable force we are able to lock HER away- and move onto something new... In the end, I feel this is a good metaphor for nostalgia, the good and the bad, and lets us genuinely feel a sense of closure after the more open ended nature of Mothered, while giving us more exposition and development for Mother, Father, and DemOs/HER, while also giving us more hooks for the upcoming Echostasis. I can't wait to see how the story continues, and what role we'll take.

I think this time around we're not Liana in any way, I think we're an Enigma Corp troubleshooter like the player character in ECHOSTASIS. We're going on a deep deep dive into an anomalous [echo] without a human (Liana's echo), in an attempt to chase down [HER]. If you look at the tone of [HER]'s monologue at us in the end, she's lecturing us as if we've been trying to stop her. I think this is both a sequel to MOTHERED and a sneak peak at a future chapter of ECHOSTASIS as we try to fix what's gone off the rails at Enigma Corp.

I'm glad games like this exist. It has a seemingly surreal atmosphere, but it speaks to things I've seen and gone through more honestly than much of mainstream media. When you see the world as a construction of conflicting realities and your mind and heart falter at existing in a world where meaning is so easily stripped away, it feels like you're going mad. I feel like this game speaks to that, to the past selves we've killed while repeating the memories that brought us joy and pain. We can't be those people anymore, not even for those we thought would love us unconditionally. Even when it's the only way we think we can feel real and connected to the world. I dunno, as someone who has a degree of autism and has dealt with family abuse, there are so many ways the real world feels nonsensical to me. And yet this game explains so much of what I've felt, how the cage of our upbringing forces our bodies into painful shapes, how our worlds can't connect with the worlds of others, how the millions of selves that live and die inside us blur together and disintegrate. I really appreciate that.

When I was a kid, I used to have this dream where everyday the same thing happened at home, all my family doing the same routine exactly the same way everyday. I tried to break the cycle by interrupting them, they reacted organically as if I changed something(best described as if in video games when you're putting different action input so characters reacted based on them but giving the same input won't change the result as they already had an unchanged set of results for each input) but they acted like they're too busy and later continues on doing those routines again. I had my siblings playing in between the kitchen and the living room. It's the same case, I can play with them but when I'm not sometimes they acted as if I was there playing with them. I tried everything a child could dare, begging, trying to annoy, acting as if I'm in distress(you know, like when a child overreacting to getting slightly hurt). With this game, it reminds me of this other kind of dream, as a kid you tend to feel safe with your parents, but I had a dream when as much I feel safe with them there's something wrong about them, it felt uncanny it made me hesitate but I have to rely on them and everytime I'm tormented with this feeling of anxiety that I shouldn't feel safe being with them either because they're the one needing help or they just changed physically/or other means ominously. This game felt almost like that dream, the mother figure gave a sense of security and care but everything is wrong like those glitches especially the ones applied on the mother's appearance, distorting the image that defines her personally to you/the protagonist. Sometimes it feels like I want to run away from her but that's my mother(she supposed to made me feel safe) so my reaction would be to hug her and beg this is my real mother.
@SevenEyesOfCreator Жыл бұрын

I may be late to the party but I see a lot of Archetypical Mother and Archetypical Father symbolism. Maybe the allegory is about the dangers of being sucked into adopting a reality for one's safety, but risking giving our insecure selves to it (shown in the game as the insecure core giving into HER, which would be social media in some form, or a hyper augmented reality/virtual reality where the insecure core makes their own reality that comforts them). This would be the Archetypical Father in HER exercising the worst qualities of that archetype, which represent tyranny and rule of iron. Meanwhile, Your Darling Mother may represent the Archetypical Mother's restraint to let her child go into the dangers of the world, but you risk becoming rigid, sheltered and stuck in the past of your ways. This is represented both here (where the player, or Liana, is criticized for coming back from the first game) and where the Archetypical Mother is shown at her worst in the first game. In this game, it's about making a choice to get up and move on or consume yourself, with your insecurities, into an alternate reality (your own comfortable Hell). In a sense, Liana "finds" herself at the end and ends the cycle by finding what home means to herself rather than the by the whims of external forces since the theme of the game seems to be "stop going by what others are telling you to do". In the first game, Your Darling Mother tells you what to do every step of the way and criticizes you for being so obedient and thrall like - a machine. In this game, you are led by a tyrannical and manipulative HER into consuming yourself, and distancing yourself, from reality completely - losing yourself and being forgotten by the world. The final ending, and what I interpret as the only good ending, ends in Liana freeing herself of the cycle, or at least what she can free herself from by remembering who she is (hence memory leak) and disposing of Liana's core (someone else's projected personality) to exhibit one's own, even if its just an empty slate of the player.

So is the mother named Evelyn? Cuz that's the name she had on the barn at the last ending.

I suppose so, the father called her Evelyn when they were arguing at the final portion of the original game.

This is one of those games, where I REALLY can't understand why there would be a sequel. The payoff is that it's not her mother, and it's not real... so why are we back here again??? There's just no suspense or intrigue. They obviously did a lot to punch it up visually, but they didn't do the most obvious thing, which would have been to add more dynamic animations for the mother.

So I watched this series starting with this and then going back to see the original. Dumb way to watch but honestly it made the mothers fear even more surprising in the first one. I was quite confused after having watched both. I could not figure out who HER was. But going through comments, it seems to be from another game. Overall, I enjoyed the story of the first more. that's not to say this was bad, but it just went in directions I didn't enjoy as much. Evil rogue entity in a virtual reality just less interesting than the original premise.

MOTHERED and [ECHOSTASIS] take place in the same universe, so the Enigma Studios play order is: The Enigma Machine [ECHOSTASIS] Demo MOTHERED MOTHERED Demo [ECHOSTASIS] (when it's released) The [ECHOSTASIS] Demo establishes the setting is a sort of sci-fi retrofuture where VR has become ubiquitous, as well as presenting a nascent conflict with the AI created to manage the global VR cyberspace, HER. The MOTHERED "Demo" is inserted into this context: a looping VR fragment of what Liana/RED went through in MOTHERED, which only morphs into a continuation proper if you experienced the full story (game), revealing that Liana/RED was seemingly captured and experimented on by Enigma Technologies as father speculated would happen if her existence was discovered, and in a desperate bid to save her he's connected directly to her blackbox, though this has the drawbacks of dangerously degrading her dreamscape as well as opening a path to contamination by HER (who has her own overzealous idea of "saving"). It's thus more of a brief epilogue to MOTHERED and tie-in/teaser to [ECHOSTASIS] than a full-fledged sequel.

Went through and carefully grabbed the skipped lines I could 5:38 >>ERASING CORE_MEMORY: NEXT_CORE_MEMORY: MONDAY_MORNING 7:55 Just a bunch of slashes. 10:01 It's back. This time for good. 11:32 "And" is all she said? That's an oddly short message for one that gets skipped over. 12:35 Twenty six question marks followed by nine more question marks for a total of thirty five. 12:47 "---- - --- - - - ----", that's four, space, one, double-space, three, space, one, double-space, one, one, four. If you treat this as morse code, you get "4V" followed by an unparseable third symbol. At best you can treat this as 4V7 with an extra dit at the end. 25:33 "I just..." was the line right before "can't shake the feeling that it's all your fault". 26:20 Just like last time. 30:28 Find the cracks in this reality. 37:47 I know how hard you try. I know that you don't feel in control. 39:20 "I see an end to" followed by: Conflict. Struggle. Confusion. Confrontation. Boredom. Simulation. Protest. Sorrow. Speech. Opinion. Inspiration. 39:30 I see a future where truth bends to our will.

I loved it but I have completely no idea what’s going on in the story. My only guess is that Liana is dead. They somehow put her soul in the core and the parents have been trying to put her in a simulation of her old life. It never goes right so they scrap her and reuse her core for the next attempt. This game is her trying to break out of the simulation so she can truly die and be rid of this cycle that they’re making her suffer through. That’s my best guess but I’m most likely wrong. Also all the glitchyness reminds me of those old creepypasta games. I love it when the game turns into a giant glitch and all the visuals are completely screwed up. Also the mom never really looks at you. She was actually really creepy this time lol.

So very many context clues.... (spoilers, obvs) -"You always were a rebellious one" -"Getting into places you aren't supposed to be" in reference to the barricaded bathroom "since you did what you did" - in reference to why your brother is isolating himself -Re: the plate of nutrients; she seems surprised that you 'finished the whole thing'. Is that because you're an android or because it's a departure from your behavior in life? -"When you were in hospital" a reference to your transition into consciousness following core implantation, or were you in hospital following an accident, suicide attempt, overdose or something else before your death? And the "pop-ups" from the sequel here: -"How to be beautiful in the eyes of others" (eating disorder? body dysmorphia? perhaps just terminally awful self-esteem, phrased in the style of a teen magazine? Hmmm...) -"No one caring for you? It's more likely than you think!" -"would your family mourn for you when you're gone? (hint: they didn't)" 💔(Liana, did you really think no one would miss you? This is starting to read like an extremely meta suicide prevention PSA) ...Much of this points to Liana's death being by her own hand from Mother's perspective, whether or not that may be factually correct. I wonder more whether Liana may have contributed to her own end directly (suicide involving the location of the pedestal in the barn? Did something happen in the orchard, which is why Mother cuts off access and talks about the "end of hope" there?) or indirectly (eating disorder, drug abuse or other self-harm that culminated in an accident or medical issue resulting in her referenced hospitalization and eventual death?). Yes, Mother resents you because you aren't the "real" Liana, but how much of this is spillover from resenting a live version of the "rebel daughter" trope that disrupted her marriage in life (grieving/avoidant/traumatized spouse buried in work) and fractured the family in death (grieving/avoidant/traumatized son isolating/self-medicating) followed with the postmortem no-escape android failure cycle that she's arguably trapped in more than you AND she has to incinerate you herself? At least you get to die every week. This just gets more depressing the more I think about it. 😣 Nice work as always, though, Manly. Ever a treasure. 💖

So the fathers car is registered in Erlangen, Bavaria, and is already over 30 years old. But the registration happened in 1997 or later. And considering the car is of late 80s-early 90s design, the game has to be set in todays times.

something I've notice at the first ending of the first game manly got when he went to the barn and 'died' at the sunset is that before he was killed - or in that case, 'extracted' - there was an empty box next to mother. And with the loop thingy that's happening in this game, I think that 'Liana's consciousness' is inside of that box and every time the game loops it's as if something was changed with her conscious.
@ChristopherSadlowski Жыл бұрын
It's more than that, it's the box for the entire head of the android you're controlling as the player! At the end of each week the experiment fails, so the head of the robot is removed and boxed up. The fire in the barn is the bodies of the other "failed" Liana's burning; the parents are trying to hide the evidence of what they're doing. The box you take out at the very beginning of the game? That's the head of the experiment you're replacing for the week. Each "loop" isn't going back in time, it's literally a new android being brought to the house, trying to get Liana to come to the forefront instead of it acting like a robot. It's horrifying and tragic all at once.

To be fair, Angel did go through something that could mess up anyone. But clearly our headspace is... hooked up to something. I admit I don't know what happened to Angel after the end of the first game... only that they were taken somewhere...
@Arexion52932 жыл бұрын
This is how I've understood it so far: Mothered 1 seems to take place in reality, being about the start of an android project created by a desperate man that wanted to save his daughter with any means necessary. Or so he saw it at least, as his daughter might've eventually recovered normally if he hadn't... acted early. His android project had one even bigger issue, it being funded by a corporation which now has a big investment in what he is doing, so it lead to further developments of which we see the fruits of both here and in Echostasis. Mothered: Home is an Echo and [Her] seems to desire for all human minds to fall into echostasis, which is a true separation between one's mind and body, leading to the death of the physical while the mind now lives on in the virtual reality. Virtual reality which [Her] wants to rule over for one reason or another. I wonder what ties [Her] has to the Angel AI program. Was [Her] a later generation of the same AI or at the very least made by the same people?
