I was reading reviews of an artist I was interested in and a review said that the artist got offended when asked for an estimate price beforehand and I immediately thought "oh no not here". The artist said something along the lines of "if you don't have money don't get a tat", but it's not about being too poor to get one. Anyone who doesn't have a thousand bucks just laying around wants to know a price estimate so that they know beforehand how much they should save up or keep in mind. Asking for a price does not mean you're on a strict budget and want to get a cheap tat, it just means you want to be prepared.

When an artist notices you have a tattoo, asks how old it is, and treats your "experience level" accordingly. Props to the artist who, upon learning my only tattoo was over 20 years old, understood that my second was akin to getting my first all over again.
@sleepymonsteraddict10 ай бұрын
For the pricing I really agree with you, I am a student and if I want to get something done, I need to know an estimate beforehand so that I can save up and work more days if needed. It's not because I don't want to pay, it's just that I am not rich and I want to have an idea of how much I'm paying so that I can save up accordingly. As for tattoo artist green flags for me, it's if your tattoo artist makes you feel comfortable, they start some small talk and ask your opinion about what you want and their design they've made. I was very nervous for my first tat, but my tattoo artists way of talking to me and giving me information made my nerves go down instantly. Still go to that tattoo artist every time!

I agree with you about the cost issue. I think I had a bit of a rocky start with my artist when I asked his hourly rate. Truly, I was not cost-comparing not was I trying to be cheap. I honestly just wanted to be sure I could bring enough cash (including tip!) to the appointment. I can’t imagine anything more embarrassing than not having enough $ with me. So, I really appreciate your comments here.

I’ve worked with three separate artists. One is a major silence artist…. One likes small talk here and there and the other, we are deep in conversation from beginning to end. Talking about the deepest craziest details of our lives. 🤣 we have a similar life story and my tattoo ends up being a sleepover type experience with all the talking. 🤣 just pay attention to your artist and follow their lead when it comes to talking. You’ll realize very quickly if they want you to talk or be quiet and just respect it…. If they prefer silence, you’ll get a better tattoo if you give them that quiet time, if they want to talk, same thing. Also if you’re chatty and talking helps (like it does for me) then use those chatty artists more often!

From a client perspective, an artist green flag is the good vibes and professionalism shown by the shop employees. Like my local artist who is really nice and respected where I live, who can give their feedback and suggestions on what they think could work better, with them being the professional, but also respecting and supporting the decision of the client. Love to see it. 1:33 Also why would I not ask how much a tattoo would be considering that’s something need to know to actually pay you, unless you’re giving out free tattoos

Green Flag! I got my first tattoo a few months ago. I had an idea. I found an artist who had excellent work. We met, I described what I wanted and left it to him to come up with the design details. I believe you should ask how much it is. That way you know how much to pay for the tattoo. I believe it's only a red flag on the client's part if he or she haggles with the price. When getting a tattoo. No client should ever haggle. I'm a tattoo client. I just got my 3rd tattoo the other day. I like, trust, and respect my tattoo artist. And I would never haggle. But I will ask how much he wants and pay him exactly what he wants.
@paulovillasenor564510 ай бұрын
Totally agree with you! I'm weirded out by artists who think it's not cool to ask about pricing - as a client, I wanna know how much the tattoo I want get will cost... it seems so dumb to go into a financial contract without knowing the cost. But as client, also respect the artist's rates... this is their profession.
@riakun6 ай бұрын
I agree! I also bring a little extra with me in case it costs a little more, and if it’s the original asking price, then I usually give it to them as a tip (tipping the artist is not mandatory, but just appreciated where I’m from, and as a fellow artist, I’m always happy to do so)

As a client, a green flag for me is of the artist is prepared to spend a long time before starting work getting the placement and size exactly right, because they understand that these factors can spoil the look of a great tattoo, or make even a mediocre one pop. If they're just slapping the template on like they don't care, my blood pressure is rising, because that tells me they might handle the needle in the same way. 🤷♂️

At my first tattoo I aske the artist if he liked conversation and he said 'as long as you don't talk with your hands'. 🤣 As far as the cost....I think a rough price is needed so i can bring cash and tip. If it is out by some, I do bring extra, but if it's going to be twice what i expect then that can be a shock and can be awkward. My artist takes cash and e-transfer and cash is just so quick and clean and tangible. It's right there in the open. He's getting paid and there is no question about it. I never want money be an issue in the process. I know roughly the cost. I pay promptly. Tip separately. Business is done and then we can chat and it's just a really nice way to end the session and feel good about the next time we meet.

I feel like that one artist could have worded it differently. My hopes is the client is coming to me with the art in the forefront of their mind and price is secondary. Price is important and a good artist can justify the price. But a client needs an estimate so they can plan accordingly

I asked my artist for a rough estimate before I got my first from him. I was referred to him by a buddy since he specializes in trad, and I’ve been looking for years for MY trad guy. Came out to be less than the quote with the homie discount. Sent him a couple referrals and I don’t ask anymore. I know what he charges hourly and it’s similar to what I charge in my line of work. It’s all good vibes and I give him freedom with his designs and I’m not a pain in the ass about making changes. I make sure he likes my ideas and is proud of his work. I gave myself my first tattoo 30 years ago, had it covered up a few years later. Gonna leave it to the pros from now on. lol. I’m addicted now.

Green flag is a tattoo artist who can speak to you about the image that you come in wanting and the actual tattoo that can be done. My first artist listened to what I wanted and verbally pared away the trite copy-cat image to the tatttoo I still love twenty-five years later. It was only after a few more tattoos that I had an understanding that what I initially wanted while doable would have resulted in a tattoo that would not age well. Other green flags are artists who ask "do you want to be able to read this when the tattoo is in this position or other people to be able to read it" or say "let me put this through a spell checker".

The first and only artist I saw asked me if I wanted some pizza beforehand, so we got it and he did the "I forgot my wallet" number right before we had to pay, after we chose what to get. He asked if I could offer him his slice (fine, it wasn't much). I remember his face while he told me that. The tattoo was great, but for that reason alone I don't feel like going there anymore. He also arrived quite a bit after the appointment, so I thought he had already eaten something. It would have been classier to pay for his food and charge me a couple euros more, at least he would have seemed genuine.

Oh and as regards the pricing issue, it's ridiculous that some artists have this "how long is a piece of string?" attitude. If you commission a tradesperson to do some renovation on your home, they will give you a quote and stick to it, even if it takes twice as long as expected due to unforeseen complications. On another job, they might get it done in half the time, so what's the bother? It all evens out over time. Besides, clients who are clearly on a tight budget and anxious about price, are the ones scrimping and saving to get something done that means a lot to them. They're the ones who aren't going to change their minds, cancel appointments last minute, or have regrets and blame their bad decision on the artist. Is that not the perfect customer?!

The human body is so weird. When I got my first tattoo i was completely fine. Talking to my artist and other people getting their tattoos chilling . Half way in the coloring phase (the tattoo is palm size under my collarbone) my left leg would jolt after the artist would pick up the needle. I looked at her and I was like "I have NO clue what is going on" and it kept happening. We took a 10 in break but getting back into it my leg would still jolt. No one in the shop has seen or heard of that before and I felt bad that I couldn't control my leg. I also cant see how someone doesnt think of what tattoo to get before hand. Like watching this video rn i am sketching out an arm sleeve idea. My first tattoo I sat on it for like 4 years before getting it. Its not a complicated piece so the day i talked to my artist about it she knew what i wanted. When the day came for the tattoo she showed me a 3 drawings that she sketched up and I choose the one I like the most.

Full disclosure is that I don't have any tattoos! Maybe this is a hot take. The artist who doesn't disclose their prices, I kind of get it. If you go to high end restaurants or luxury brand outlets, they never have the prices listed. These places operate on the assumption that you are part of the 1% club, so the prices are a non-issue. If you have to ask the price of the product, you are not their intended audience. Is this a great practise? No. Is it snobby, and elitist? YUP. It's also pretty scammy because it allows the artist to scale their prices, depending on how much they can convince their client to pay. Unless this guy is a celebrity tattoo artist, he needs to get out of here with that nonsense.

@@EvolveINK I'm still very much on the fence at the moment! I am an English teacher in Japan, and tattoos are still very much associated with yakuza here. It is starting to become more progressive, and we are seeing more people in public with tattoos. But, they are still very much a faux pas. I've had coworkers have to wear full arm bands even in the peak of summer for work. You can also get turned away from gyms, pools, and onsen. And then there's the personal issue of eczema! Not exactly looking to get a permanent allergic reaction, lol. I've been told that the technology is changing, and there might be vegan alternatives for people with skin sensitivity issues? He doesn’t meant that u don’t ask about the price, he’s trying to say that instead of discussing the tattoo first , you start with the price first , which in most cases means that you gonna try to lower the price u gonna ask for discounts….. and for the artist is a little bit disrespectful to start with the how much question . If it’s me I’ll know you are not here for my art and probably not gonna do it because u are here to get the best price, and if it’s a good Artist u know it won’t be cheap . You need to know the money of course, but at least ask the wright way.

Why didn’t you go over horror tattoos.

Because they need no explanation. Horror tattoos are a solid green flag in my book!

Just a little critique of your videos. We watch these videos to see the tattoos. But the majority of the time in your videos are showing you talk. You should show the tattoo your critiquing the whole time you talk about it. Not cut the camera back to you. If you really have to show yourself talking, the split screen is good to do.

Green flag: good hygiene both you and the artist… nobody wants to be that close to someone who smells bad.

Thats just stupid. Why would you be offended if they ask the price? How do you expect them to bring enough money if they dont know the price?
