This would be stupid; manny has 10 years of huge money remaining into his 40 season. Tell me 1 contract of 10 years of more that has worked out long term. If this would be the off season after a 101’win season and the Mets we’re totally going for winning it all with a core that was going be present for 3-5 seasons maybe a good move. But not at the position the Mets are now. The Mets need to not spend a huge amount of money in anything long term or back loaded and play the 2024 season and see what happens. If they can play around .500 this season that should put them into a wild card race. As we have seen in 2022 and 2023 the teams built to win haven’t been as successful as wild card teams. After the 2024 season the Mets have a lot of money falling off the books and the situation with Alonso future will be known. Than the team can figure out what direction to go. Still think developing within and signing players over what they would make in arbitration and below what they would make in free agency for 6-10 years of prime years a smarter idea

I would rather pay Bellinger to add a middle of the order bat. He may not be as consistent as Manny but he’s in his prime at 28 and fits well with the roster. Can swing from center to first if Alonso is to have go down for an extended period of time. Always the chance that he reverts back to his mvp form as well.

Belligner has a QO, he would cost the Mets two draft picks and $1 million of their pool money on top of the big contract he will want. That is a lot to give up for a guy who was awful from 2020 to 2022. Players who put up a big year in a contract year after several years of bad performance is a huge red flag.

Yes, Steve Cohen is the richest owner in baseball, and he can afford any individual contract. However, the last time I checked the Mets are not a 501(c)(3) charity organization. DON'T bail out the Padres by taking on this albatross contract. Ryan, you said yourself he did not play up to the AAV of this contract in 2023 and it is reasonable to think he less likely to do so as he ages. Again, Cohen IS the richest owner and YES, he can pay down his mistakes, but he should not payoff the mistakes of other teams. The longer this team stays above the Cohen tax the higher the QO penalties rise. This interferes with building the sustained winner. Let Machado's contract be some other team's problem.

Machado is no doubt, one of the top six 3rd basemen's in the Major's & he can unexpectedly connect & hit home runs with batters on base. If the Mets can't land Machado long term which would cost the Mets some money, but, hey if the Mets want talent, then, they need to pay up. As far as his persona, all players like all of us non-players, we are not perfect & we all have our own personalities whether people like our personalities or not. The move the Mets should be doing is Justin turner for 2 years. He has played on winning teams and can teach. He had a solid year in Boston last year. If he has a good year and the mets fall out of it he could be traded at the deadline. Mets could also afford to eat his entire contract for a better player return. Short team contracts what Mets need now if they fail no big issue if the player is good flip at the deadline.

Baty is a terrible 3rd baseman. I just don't see his defense improving. He has an average arm, doesn't position himself well and his reflexes are slow as slow can be for a 3rd baseman. And his offense is equally as bad. Big reason the Mets sucked last year.

2023 was a tough season for the entire team especially with the way 2022 ended and high expectations team put on itself. I just believe team did not have good chemistry in 2023. it a bad combination for young player to perform under such scrutiny and lack of support from teammates and management.
