Fifty-one years ago, the Monday after the regular season ended, the Mets had to play a doubleheader against the Cubs at Wrigley Field with the rain falling. I listened on my transistor radio walking home from college classes. I remember exactly where I was as the final out was made in Game 1 and the Mets clinched the NL East. Second game canceled. I know we will have to play the second game this time, but let’s hope it is anti-climactic.

The METS will probably win a game @ ATL today. But, in reviewing the NL Playoff Bracket, the METS are better off splitting instead of sweeping because a split gets the METS the 3rd Wild Card and they would go back to MIL tonight for the first-of-three @ MIL in the Wild Card Round, followed by a trip to PHI for Saturday's opening best-of-five NL Division Series round. If the METS sweep, they would need to go to SD late tonight for three games there and then stay on the west coast @ LAD for that Division Series bracket for two @ LAD, then back to NYC for games three and four and then back to LAD, if that series were to go five games. I also believe both MIL & PHI are easier opponents for the METS than SD & LAD, notwithstanding the onerous travel.
@benjaminwatlers18484 ай бұрын
I would think the air travel alone coming from Milwaukee to Atlanta; than if they swept going to San Diego would be crazy on the Mets.
@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar4 ай бұрын
Spicy take that none of you will agree with, but Megill might just > Severino, and playing a doubleheader might end up being a blessing. Megill’s FIP is nearly a run lower, because he misses bats and limits HRs, and he’s cut down on the walks. Severino’s numbers are a bit worse than Taijuan Walker’s in 2022. As for the doubleheader, they’re hard to sweep. The majority end up as splits. I think they were in their heads last week, and had there been no hurricane, they might have gotten swept. Now there’s no time to think and stew. Fans always want players to play with “more urgency,” just like how fans want managers to get mad, reflecting fan anger. That’s usually a terrible idea. Playing “with urgency” is what gets them into trouble. Be loose, have fun, nobody expected them to be here anyway. This could be end up being the best thing that could have happened to them. Side note: It occurs to me that if the Mets clinch today, they can’t celebrate. Megill’s really the only guy who can get hammered post-game, because he won’t be on the Wild Card roster.

@benjaminwatlers18484 ай бұрын
My thoughts on seeing Megill pitch game 1 almost has the feel that the Mets are hoping that Atlanta clinches in game 1; starts a less tier pitcher for game 2 and Severino is the Severino the Mets know which results in the Mets pitching their ticket to the playoffs in game 2. I think will all the years of the Mets collapses; all the times that the Mets have been knocked out late in the regular season. 2022 the Mets were never the same after the Braves last September sweep. 2023 the Mets were swept in June by Braves went on a major losing streak and were sellers at the deadline. 2024 Schwellenbach beats the red hot Mets. Mets go onto to loose 2 of 3 to the Brewers; when with 5 games to got the Mets only needed 2 wins. In 3 games the Mets only got 1 win. The momentum may not be there for Atlanta like it could have been if game 2 last Wednesday wasn't washed out. I just think as a fan of baseball you see Megill pitching and it doesn't feel like a Mets win.
@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar4 ай бұрын
Well, that’s partly true in the sense that if Megill wins Game 1, they can hold Severino back for the WC series. However, I honestly have more confidence in Megill than Severino. Megill misses bats more reliably, gives up fewer HRs, thus his FIP is nearly a run lower, and he’s been better lately. Fans overrate Severino, whose numbers are comparable to Taijuan Walker’s in 2022, though Severino can go deeper into games if he’s on. The innings might be catching up to him, though. But he had a sub-10% K-BB% until very recently, which is awful. His K rate has finally crept above 20%, but is still below average. He is able to get soft contact though, which is good. But in a vacuum, I prefer pitchers who allowed LESS contact.

I would be a lot more confident if it was anyone but the Braves. It will be a shame if the Mets don't make the playoffs after having a great season after having a bad start. The Mets should forget about the playoffs and focus on getting the win. It should be all hands on deck then worry about the playoffs later. Even though they only need one win, I think its not going to come easy.
@benjaminwatlers18484 ай бұрын
100% agree on all hands on deck; Mets should have started Luis Severino and went for it in game 1. Don't think you like the idea of Tyler Megill with the big game. What happens if Megill gets into early trouble are the Mets going have to let him take one for the team? If the Mets loose game 1 than game 2 is going be so much pressure for them, to avoid another collapse. Braves loose both games it was a good season as missing so many players Atlanta should have been out of it weeks ago
@dashx11034 ай бұрын
@@benjaminwatlers1848 Starting Megill in game 1 is absolutely the best strategy. If Megill loses, then the Mets go into game 2 with Severino against ... somebody, but not Sale. And that should put the Mets in a good position. If the Mets pitched Sevy in game 1 and lost to Schwellenbach, then they'd have Megill ... who has been good lately, but hardly has been a dependable starter in his career .. in game 2. I think it is more likely that Megill collapses completely than Severino collapses. And there definitely is a world in which the Mets simply don't have to "collapse" in game 2 to make the playoff. So, .. yeah, I just think the strategy is right.
