@@bigguyswagman4455 steroids made baseball better
@travisrowe76974 жыл бұрын
capacitance-rca1981 there’s no way of knowing who was and wasn’t on PEDs. Some used them for years, some for a short time, some used a ton, some might’ve only used one type. Imo the hall of fame is a collection of baseball history and it’s best players. A player should be judged mostly on the era he played in. There are fairly credible rumors steroid use dates back to the 50s and 60s. Not to mention uppers, greenies, amphetamines, cocaine, etc. the list goes on over the decades. Put in the best of each era and leave it at that. Manny, bonds, Clemens, they all should be in.
@travisrowe76974 жыл бұрын
capacitance-rca1981 your so called “roiders” weren’t just home run hitters. How many guys took them and went from fringe players to everyday roster players? How many guys went from 5 hr guys to 20 hr guys? How many guys went from 15 doubles to 40 doubles? Not to mention pitchers were doing them as well. How do u account for them? Bottom line is you can’t. Baseball turned a blind eye. Sure we don’t think jeter used them, but who’s to say he or another “non user” didn’t ever take HGH or something else to avoid injury or recover faster? That’s a PED as well. Put an asterisk in the record books I guess if it helps you sleep better, but there’s no way you can fairly tell me each and every player that did or didn’t use them.

I sometimes think about a trade proposal I read about in the newspaper somewhere around either 2010 summer or 2011 summer. It was Tim Lincecum for Jacoby Ellsbury. Ofc Timmy was Timmy, and SF doesn’t have a World Series without Timmy on the roster. But they also had weird outfields over perform inconsistently. Andres Torres becoming a near All -Star for a year and a half. Squeezing the last drops out of Pat Burrell. Getting Cody Ross for chump change(who had a pretty good season with Boston in 2012 that made me so happy). Then there was Angel Pagan, whose health dictated the Giants’ W/L records until 2015. Melky Cabrera had the 2012 batting title via the Tony Gwynn rule, but refused so MVPosey wound be winner by default. Hunter Pence was Mr. Hustle but we only got one game with Melky/Pagan/Pence, Panda/Craw/Scutaro/Belt/Posey before Melky’s PED suspension made Gregor Blanco a starter again. Blanco was arguably the best 4th outfielder of the 2010’s due to his reliability with SF. They’ve since experimented with the likes of Gorkys Hernandez, Dennard Span, Kevin Pillar, Steven Duggar and Mauracio Dubon before finally throwing Yaz in CF and ending the search. Though I wonder if they win more games in the 2010’s if Timmy’s 4.50+ ERA was replaced with Ellsbury. Pagan likely would’ve been a great defensive left fielder, and probably would’ve stayed healthy during a time where he was an elite spark plug(this guy would tear his hammy on inside the park homers after leading the league in triples).

Up till the 13:30 mark I found the first two episodes of this saga to be pretty unbiased, for the most part. It gives the credit he's due for his accomplishments to that point in time, while also mixing in some foreshadowing anecdotes that lead to the phenomenon that we've come to know as "Manny being Manny".... At that 13:30 mark I feel like like there was a shift in the narrative, with the narrator stating that Manny disappeared in LF "to go hang out in the Monster". Manny left the field to go take a pee. He wasn't simply leaving to sit down and enjoy a Coke and a hot dog. And Manny wasn't the first to do this. Opposing players and Sox both have jogged into the confines of the Monster at various points of games to go pee, both between innings and during pitching changes. Johnny Damon would saunter over from center to relieve himself in the urinal inside the Monster 3 or 4 times a season. This incident never did sit right with me. It always seemed like the media used this as an excuse to turn the narrative around. It felt like there was a faction in the New England media that wanted this guy gone, and now they had an event they could point to and go "see!!! He's a bad teammate, and a cancer to the clubhouse." And I can't really understand why. The Sox were only about a half a year removed from that historic WS title, and Manny had more than lived up to the expectations that came with his contract, which at the time had him as the second highest paid player in the game.
@isaacgraham57273 жыл бұрын

I remember one game where the camera zoomed in on Curt Schilling sitting in the dugout poring over his notebook of batters. Manny was sitting next to him, looked at him, then looked at the camera and just waved his hands like "that stuff is useless" and kept on doing it. Schilling, with no clue what was going on, looked up, looked at the camera, then looked a Manny, who played it all innocent and patted him on the back. Funniest dugout moment I ever saw. Wish there was a clip of it.

I mentioned this in the last one but oddly enough the first Manny memory I think of was during his final year of pro ball when he was in the Taiwan league and he hit a ball so hard the play by play said, in English, "This ball is long gone, just like the ex girlfriend who will never return! Home run!"

6:15 I LOVE this part of baseball in particular. Tell a pinch hitter “just keep it alive, get on 1st, and keep the line moving.” and homie goes out there and hits an extra innings BOMB out of the park. Then that VERY same guy, riding high after playoff bombs probably decided he’d go home in the off-season and have a block party BBQ where he dunks on the dreams of local young hoopers and the pride of old heads. Gets injured, then replaced by AROD!!
