This chemistry video tutorial explains how to solve manometer pressure problems in addition to explaining how manometers work. It also provides an introduction into barometers which are used to measure atmospheric pressure. Manometers are used to measure the pressure of a gas by measure the height difference between the fluid based mercury columns and adding or subtracting that value from the atmospheric pressure.

Professor Organic Chemistry Tutor, thank you for a beautiful explanation of How Manometers work on planet earth. The Manometer problems are simple to follow, however; understanding how pressure works inside of a tube is problematic. This is an error free video/lecture on KZbin TV with the Organic Chemistry Tutor.

one of the limbs of a mercury manometer is connected to a gas cylinder the mercury level in the limb connected to the gas cylinder is 10 cm higher than that in the other then the gauge pressure of the gas is____cm of hg. I got 66 cm of hg but the answer says -10 cm of hg. Am I right or is the book right?

if you use mercury it will be in mm but if you use another liquid (less denser) it might be in cm...for instance water...has 10.3m of height to equal the weight of 1 atm..this experiment was actually first carried out by accident in italy where the underground water couldnt reach a heinght higher than 10.3 m ...kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5ynmZ-wdpKfras check this out for more info..

I'm probably wrong, but I don't think a partially filled tube with 720mmHg will raise to 760mm when flipped into the Hg tank. The tube has to be COMPLETELY full before flipping, otherwise you a have 760mmHg air pocket in your tube--the level will not change. If you had 780mmHg, yes it would drop, the outside atmospheric pressure is too weak to support more than a 760 mm column of dense Hg.
