Some notes: - Joey and Ross met in England and first came up with the idea of the band and the name "Manowar" even though the band formed when they went back to New York. This is why they would often reference being "Born in England". - This album was made an apology for having their England tour canceled (according to the band, they were just about to board the plane to do their England tour when they were told not to go because the sister of one of the organizers died). - Yes. Joey plays bass almost exclusively with a pick. - That was actually Joey playing bass on the intro of "Bridge of Death", he plays this with an 8-string bass live, and probably also does so in the studio track. Ross was playing the keyboards in the background. Joey also does the demonic voices in this track and Black Arrows. - "Each Dawn I die", "Bridge of Death", and "Gloves of Metal" from the previous album are played in a completely different guitar tuning to any other Manowar song, because according to Ross, he thought that that was how Black Sabbath tuned their guitars (it wasn't, he would later admit). - It's quite funny that you thought of black metal when "Bridge of Death" came on. Manowar definitely influenced a ton of black metal down the line. Can't wait for your review of Sign of the Hammer!

Not completely right. It was John "Dawk" Stillwell who came up with the band name, when they were brainstorming about how to name the band. He finally said: "What's wrong with 'MANOWAR' ? " The rest is history...

About The Bridge of Death - Joey DeMaio has told in an interview once that this song is about a warrior who had sold his soul and upon his death is facing the satan to fight him but realise it is not possible anymore - satan telling him to cut his head and so more evil will be released. So the warrior accepts his destiny and start serving him as his soul had been sold long ago.

A great album. A favorite of mine from Manowar. Back when metal was metal. You did Army of Immortals on my request sometime back. You're right, the song was a tribute to their fans. For Black Arrows, Joey is playing a piccolo bass. After you go through all the Manowar albums you are going to do, it be great to see you give your ranking of all the albums you do.

To Bridge of Death song - back in the 80s many people considered metal to be satanic music and there were people who claimed that about Manowar as well. And this was actually a reaction to that. As Joey once stated something like "We're no satanists, but if you want satanism, you'll get it, and you'll get the best one." :-) (typical Joey :D ) I wasn't too impressed with this song at first listen either, but after some time I started to adore it. The epicness and atmosphere is just outstanding. As you said you understood some connections better while listening to Army of Immortals, then try listening to the Kings Of Metal album again ;-) Great reaction as always. Thank you and see you at the next album.
