I’m absolutely thrilled to finally find a video showing thread painting on a quilt panel. Everything else shows quilting and filling everything in with thread. I just bought a panel that arrived this week that has three birds vertically on a branch with a lot of Pineneedles around. It just looks like it’s calling out for thread painting. But I think I’m gonna do your trapunto on the birds. I’ve never done trapunto and I’ve never done thread painting, but this panel is for myself so it’s worth playing with. I did buy two so if I mess up, I have another panel. Thank you so much for this wonderful video. The other thing I’m absolutely thrilled about is I didn’t know how to do airplay to my TV, but somehow I hit the right icon and your video went right to my television so I could see everything you did so well. At 80 years old that’s not bad. Now I have to remember how I did it.🤣🤣🤣

I am a beginner quilter, and I was so happy to hear your comment about moving the quilt while quilting. I am on a domestic machine and sometimes can't see what I am doing if I don't turn the quilt. I always felt I was doing something wrong. Now I know it is okay as long as I stop and the needle is down!

Ron, this video on trapunto could not have come at a better time. I am actually working on a fabric panel with flower arrangements in flower vases. So pretty! I've added it to my list of sewing projects. I've seen trapunto before, but not for a long time. I do need to try it. And if you want snow, we have it! Forget the mountains and come on to Ohio! We sure do have snow here. Right now, at 7am, it's minus 5 degrees in my area. And we have the added bonus of Ice Fishing on Lake Erie! The fishing shanties will be popping up all over very soon! I'll be in my Warm sewing room all winter, but you can try fishing out on the ice! Brrr!!!

Your explanation of how and why to choose certain areas and enhance them with thread color, flange on the border and trapunto was so helpful. The only trapunto I knew about was sewing around the area and then opening the fabric from the back and stuffing added loft batting then stitching that opening back closed! This was great to see a layering of loft first and the effect it creates. Loved it, nice tutorial ❣️ Thank you!

I’ve done trapunto work by hand, but not using free motion quilting. I love the look. As I have several panels waiting for inspiration, this technique would be a great idea for at least one of them. If all goes well I may just get some UFO projects completed. Thank you again, Rob👏🏻👍🏻

Trapunto usage of batting I’ve been doing awhile for my appliqués sometimes doubled plus sandwich batting, but this is another great example of it being used for scenery! Love the panel with the yellow border and the duck bill scissors too. Also your quilting in the water is very interesting! Thanks so much for a great easy example!

To Lisann, for highlighting the snow, I would use the clear "holographic" thread. It is clear but with a colored (red, blue, green and sometimes gold) shimmer that pics up light and reflects it without changing the colors beneath. Great idea, I did not think about that until you asked how!

I have questions. 1- when you do the extra batting for puffiness, you put it in behind the panel and sew around the scene part you want puffy, then cut out around it. You just have the panel over the batting and sew with the batting down on the machine (bottom of the sewn piece)? That doesn’t cause any problem? And 2 - when you switched threads (from the blue to the yellow) what in the world did you do? You said you tied it off (new yellow to old blue) but skipped right over that whole good hint step. I love this quilt, and have several I look forward to doing this with as I, too, Love panels!

I just started watching your tutorials, Rob, they are great! It is not clear to me what you did here. After cutting away the first batting around the church, trees and snow, did you add another layer of batting with the backing? I get that "Trapunto" means wanting certain parts of the quilt to stand out, but would that mean that the rest of the quilt doesn't have batting, at all? Thanks for your enthusiasm in quilting and sewing!
