Hi Stephanie. I want to thank you so very much for this tutorial. I am making a quilt for my grandson and the dinosaur panel was off by 3.5”. I tried other methods and then followed you step by step and wha la!! It’s square enough to trim only a tidbit off. I am so grateful for your help as I was truly getting discouraged. Now I’m excited to proceed with the quilt. Thank you thank you thank you. Darci L

I know this is an older video but is the best one I’ve seen! I have that exact Santa panel and it’s been in my stash for years because of the squaring. I’m going to actually be able to get that one done now! Thank You 🎉

I just had a light bulb moment! I watched a video by Jamie Whalen (sp?) Anyway, he showed how to put a wonky backing on the longarm. He rolled it back and forth several times until it wasn't wonky anymore. I have tried his method several times and it works every time! Now I understand why it worked because of your explanations. So, now my light bulb moment. I'm going to load my wonky panel onto the longarm and roll it back and forth and if I have to, I will lightly mist with water.

Amazing! I just tried this with a panel that was off by a good 4 inches. Had to pull and stretch about 3 times, then pressed and it’s perfect! Yeah! Thank you!!😘

It would be nice to see a sample of a rectangular panel - like the Call of the Wild one you started with and show how to stretch it out to square up. The rectangular panels don't make a triangle. Thanks from a beginner.

I have some of those as well. Call of the wild and wondering the same thing. Did you find a video? Thanks

I'm going to try this on my panel, but honestly, she kind of lost me when she ironed on her cutting mat. Few knowledgeable quilters would ever do such a thing.

Maybe it is an old mat

You can use a ironing pad instead

I watched that and was dumbfounded. Never saw anything like that before. Has this been a secret fabric companies have known and just never shared? One thing, how did she iron on top of that cutting mat? Did that once and had a warp.
@sandiverbridge53625 жыл бұрын
I am watching it right now and can't believe she ironed on the cutting mat, I would think that would ruin it.

It is not warp it is called skew and it is found in all fabric. It shows up more on Panels. But a good video on how to deal with the skew.

Sometimes the selvages are not straight so how can you use it if it's not straight??? I would go by the fold myself. Sometimes I will pull on the selvage to see if that helps it straighten.

Followed the instructions exactly and still couldn't get it squared. I've never seen fabric that won't stay put like this dream big panel. It's even hard to pin. This is supposed to be a Christmas gift, but it may end up going to the dog if it turns out crooked.

I have never seen anyone use a selvedge as a straight edge. Selvedges are NOT suppose to be used to determine your straight edge, stretching is fine to help align the grain then use the fold as your straight edge! Not sure why someone who represents a fabric company would show this...
@sheilafruge38854 жыл бұрын
Ginmars1 I use the selvedge as a straight line on my longarm all of the time. I was taught this by people who professional longarm instructors from various longarm companies . I wouldn’t hesitate to use the techniques in this video

I hear so mana you women in the quilting world saying “salvage”. Ever since I was in Home Economics, I was told that it is a selvege
@ksharpe81373 жыл бұрын
I know. I cringe every time I hear that. 😩
@jerrywampler31945 жыл бұрын
Fabric does not have a SALVAGE, it has a selvage. Salvage does not mean the "edge". It refers to restore something that has been damaged. Pet peave of mine.
@tacksscherbo77714 жыл бұрын
Jerry Wampler - Well, if it's a "pet peave" of yours, then your "pet peave" is a pet PEEVE of mine. lol If you critique someone's word use, ya oughta spell yours right, eh? By the way, "selvage" is the American spelling. "Selvege" is the British spelling. Neither is incorrect relating to fabric and both appear in dictionaries.
