Rob Appell demonstrates how to make an under-the-sewing-machine organizer or tool caddy with pockets to hold your scissors, seam ripper, and anything else you might need while you are quilting at the machine. It also has a little trash bag to hold thread clippings. This project is made with fusible bosal foam and 10 inch squares of precut fabric (layer cake). Rob used a "Bequest" Patty Cakeby Briar Hill Designs for RJR Fabrics, but this project would be fantastic in whatever fabric line you choose!

Man Sewing is powered by Missouri Star Quilt Co. We share free instructional video tutorials every week to inspire you to create something cool. Our projects range from quilting and sewing to all sorts of textile crafts. Although we have a male host and a masculine name like Mansewing, our quilts, art projects, and sewing machine tips are geared to everyone: men and women, kids and adults, and, of course, beginners and more advanced artists. Rob's patterns, t-shirts, tools, and notions (including the Shark Applicutter) can be found at missouriquiltco.com.

I've made one of these; they really do come in handy and save me time from 'hunting' for stuff. I didn't do a removable pocket, but I'll make a matching one from my sewing machine n mat now. TFS

What a great project! I like the size of this caddy, as well as the removable little trash container. Most caddies are too long/big for use at my machine setup. This one will be very usable. I also appreciate being able to use the layer cakes in my stash. Thank you for sharing this!

Thank you for the video and the plans link. I like this smaller version of a sewing machine mat for the reasons you mentioned. 👍 Tips: I've used zip ties for boning. Make the thread catcher, sized to fit a disposable plastic cup of choice. Much easier to simply pull cup out of the bag and empty, than trying to remove snipped threads from a fabric bag. Wide selection of sizes from small drinking cups to quart sized food containers. Other similar objects can be used, as well. Cut down water bottle, for example.

I was just thinking about putting a little sandwich bag in it- because “at times” I NEED some chocolate and a liner of some type would keep the pouch clean when wrappers might have to go in! 😉

Zip ties are another option. Come in many sizes and colors. It's what I use for this type project. If nothing else is available, strips can be cut from flexible cutting mats, bleach bottles, and other semi-rigid /semi-flexible plastics. Be care about sharp edges with some of them. Use sandpaper / emery board to soften edges, if needed.

Rob, this project made me realize, what I could need help with. I am part of a repair cafe movement. We have meetings in a youth house, where we can rent the rooms. I am textile repair person and dont have a car, so would love to have a safe backpack type carrier case for my sewing machine, threads, gadgets and some fabrics that I use as under the threadbare parts of clothing. Using busses, trams and sometimes my bike to get there, the machine would travel much safer in a padded backpack instead of the bumpy ride I have at the moment with a shopping trolley, I have my stuff on. I would be interested, if you see this need maybe popular enough to make a tutorial out of it? I can't be the only one neding to transport my sewing stuff without the safety of a car.

I'm curious to know how you use this pouch. You never showed a picture of it in place. The description says "under machine" but you can't do it to the right end of the machine because the power cord will be in the way. You can't put it towards the front, left, or back because it will catch on the fabric as you sew. I don't know where it goes.

why are you putting 2 pockets, 1 on each side? i'm confused? am i supposed to have a rung on my table so that this can hang on it that swings out so that both sides are useable and i have easy access to that second pocket? otherwise isn't that 2nd pocket going to be sitting under the sewing machine and be a waste of cloth and thread? and are the measurements for this so it can sit in the front? i don't understand why every tutorial is for it to sit in the front. if you are sewing anything, it sits in front of you. wouldn't it get all caught up in either your tools or the pouch itself? Wouldn't it be smarter to make one that hung off to the right of the machine.where nothing you are sewing will come in conact with it? i'm not trying to be contrary, it's just my logical brain isn't seeing how i would make things easier.

Hello, is there a sewing machine that has or can rotate the foot and feeding 90 degrees? This is in order to switch a long tube 6" diameter of fabric say 2 to 3 feet long. On a regular machine I have to bunch up the fabric and it just does NOT work as I am butting against the enclosure of the mechanical sync shaft of the feed mechanism, if you know what I mean. I would like to slip my tube over that mechanism and stitch, no table involved. I looked at the Zuki's but I don't know what this feature is called. Thank you.

Love this -- I love my pin cushion with trash bag. Unfortunately, the table I use for sewing now is slippery and the pin cushion tends to slide off with the weight of the little bag. I use a magnetic pin container now, so this will be perfect to keep my scrap bag handy and avoid it falling on the floor! Thank you

Instead of boning, in thread catchers or anything you want to keep open, I use strapping off of parcel packages. Your home improvement places, throw them away daily and will give it to you for free. It will fold as well and always pop right back into shape as long as its never creased. Needle goes right through it without any issues, just don't get the metal strapping. I do my tool holder longer, same distance as my sewing machine and add slide in pockets on the back for my larger rulers. Keeps em out of the way but handy for when needed. Awesome job and your teaching skills are finaminal Rob. Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
