I'm from the UK but I first saw this movie with friends in Alabama curled up on their sofa with one of their cats and a young lady from Atlanta Ga. At the point where the notifications of death started to arrive I had a complete meltdown. I've since walked the Wall and paid my respects to the people of my generation (I'm 73) who didn't make it back.

They did, and did it well, but applying a military solution to a political problem, and a WEAK, ineffectual ally we were propping up. (Interestingly, LBJ went to see an Aging MacArthur in 1964 in New York., Mac told him " Do not get in a Land War in SE Asia, sonny boy" LBJ, incensed at being called "Sonny boy" ignored the advice.

My generation (The Boomers) was nearly destroyed physically and spiritually by this chosen war. No one attacked America and many rejected the calling, fleeing to Canada. We still mourn the ones killed and demand the return of the missing after all these years. The losses continued 😪 when returning soldiers with PTSD took their own lives or died from Agent Orange. The guilty need to own up to this tragedy.

Ok, who are the guilty that need to own up to it? Do you think Korea was a tragedy also? It was an attempt to prevent the spread of communist tyranny from N. Korea into S. Korea. Due to our efforts (and allies) and sacrifice to prevent that, S. Korea is a prosperous free democracy today. It was a huge success of the 1950's. The US intention was to do exactly the same thing in the 1960's.....prevent the spread of communist tyranny of N. Vietnam into the south and take over. It failed because of failed civilian US leadership. The US military would have prevailed, but stupid civilian leadersip imposed rules that crippled the effort. The intention was completely noble. It was mismanaged and failed. Don't blame the US military (with the exception on Wm Westmoreland). Blame the political leadership. The result was the slaughter of millions of people (counting also what happened subsequently in Cambodia because of the loss to the communists). The real blame for the failure were idiots like LBJ, Robert McNamara, Henry Kissinger, Nixon.

@@jeffro221 Yes, Yokosuka. Unfortunately we only got a little time in port, most of our time was spent in Vietnam, often times in the rivers. Two ships I was on were homeported there and served in Vietnam. But I had friends there and really enjoyed the time. I used to go to a bar that was off to the north of town, one most service members didn't go to. Got to know the bar owner, used to exchange his MPC for him. One Christmas he took me, the bartender, and some ladies that frequented the bar to Tokyo on the train. We had steak dinners in a real Japanese restaurant, and saw a show as well. The Vietnam War, like every war, had soldiers with lots of different motives, philosophies, ideologies, and opinions. In 1965, when the U.S. sent in the first group of combat military personnel, I was 15 years old. I was in the 9th grade. I watched the 10 O'clock news every night, just to stay informed about the Vietnam War. By the time I was a senior, '68-69, I had done enough research to have a general idea about what was going on. I knew that Eisenhower had sent a hand full of advisers to South Vietnam to advise the South Vietnamese army and assist them with battle plans and defense strategies. I knew that Eisenhower had given Kennedy a heads up on the growing hostilities between North and South Vietnam. Eisenhower told Kennedy that there was a good chance he would have to send combat troops to Vietnam. When Kennedy took office, he began to drastically increase the number of military advisers in Vietnam. Kennedy was assassinated after serving 3 years, and Johnson took office. I think Johnson knew that Kennedy was planning on sending combat troops , and used a bogus, made up version of an attack on a U.S. ship to justify sending combat troops in 1965. I'm saying all that to say this; we weren't just a bunch of ignorant clueless sheep marching off to war. Most young people were very well informed about the war, and many of us enlisted. I graduated high school in May of 1969 and joined the army in August 1969. I wanted to go to war because my country was at war. I arrived in Vietnam Dec. 31, 1969. I did a 1 year tour and then volunteered for another 6 month tour. The soldiers I served with were well-informed, well-trained, good soldiers. The United States never lost a "Major Battle" in Vietnam. We were sold out by our government. So please, don't paint us all as a bunch of uninformed kids sent into something we had no understanding of. That's not true at all. I came home suffering from agent orange exposure (heart and artery problems), partial hearing loss from getting vehicle hit by an RPG, PTSD from my experience in the Battle of Lom Sahn 719, and sleep apnea resulting from nervous condition brought on by PTSD. The VA denied my claim for compensation for over 45 years until I had a heart attack at age 68 due to artery problems brought on by agent orange. The VA was despicable when we returned. But I can say, they have made a tremendous turn-around in the last few years, especially when Trump floated lots of the dead wood out of the VA during his presidency. Bottom line. I would do it all again, because I love this country.

It is sad. But we can never forget the sacrifice that these people laid on the alter of freedom. People want you to believe that the US wasn’t attacked, but the United States in reality was attacked by the North Vietnamese in July and August of 1964, when they attacked 2 United States Destroyer task forces in the Gulf of Tonkin. Now don’t try to say that it never happened because it happened. I have a friend who was on a Destroyer in August when our ships were attacked. I have known many veterans and if you were to ask if they loved war? They would say that you are a sick person. Remembering those who died in the wars that the United States fought in weather a Paratrooper that fought in Normandy or the Marine who fought in Quadlecanal or in Bellauwood or Vietnam, the Air crew that fought in the air against the Reich. The Private in Gettysburg. The Captain in Mansass. The first thing to remember is that the Civil War wasn’t a popular war. The Revolutionary War wasn’t popular until General Washington was able to win 2 battles in Trenton and Princeton. Then people started to believe that it was possible to win. The thing that helped the United States to win was that Great Britain was running out of money to fight the war here and the war that they had going on in India at the same time. The one thing is that every Veteran I’ve ever known was proud of their service to the security of this great nation. But remember that Memorial Day isn’t just about hot dogs and hamburgers. It’s about honoring the veterans who died in war for The United States and in reality the members of the Allied Forces who fought alongside them and who died along with them as well. 🇺🇸🇳🇿 🇦🇺🇬🇧🇳🇴🇫🇷🇨🇦
