You can thank the great Sidney Toler for this, he had creative control over the CHARLIE CHAN series at Monogram. He insisted that Moreland and Carter got the opportunities to perform their act in two entries in the series, THE SCARLET CLUE and DARK ALIBI. Moreland later recalled the importance of Sidney Toler and the Chan films to his career as they helped him get bookings onstage. Toler was a beautiful man, on the set of the last Toler Chan film THE TRAP, Toler was in his seventies and suffering from intestinal cancer. Moreland asked a visibly distressed Toler why he didn't seek medical attention. Toler replied, "Manny, if I quit the picture now, I'll put all these people out of work." What else needs to be said.

This man could have been one of the Three Stooges. Moe and Larry supposedly loved him. And Columbia insisted on Joe Besser because he was already under contract and, well, not, um, you know.... Moreland would have been a fantastic Stooge! He would have added a LOT to the later shorts -- and can you just SEE him do this skit with Moe? Of course, Moe would have lost patience before it ended....

In my opinion Mantan Moreland is one of the best comedic actors in the history of film. His routines with Ben Carter are hysterical. No matter how many times you view them they will have you laughing out loud. Many of the later Charlie Chan films would be unbearable without Mantan's comic genius. This man should be more appreciated.✌️

Art is Art. It has no color; when I watch the classic Charlie Chan movies, I don't see Chinese, blacks, or whites; I see individuals who create Art and entertain. That is the Beauty of America. Charlie Chan is an American like you and me - where he came from is irrelevant, who plays him is irrelevant - this illness that has gripped America with identity is killing the Republic
