This critique makes no sense, how can you despair that he does not go beyond intellectualizing the social problems? This is a cinematic retelling of a man's life and it should be lauded for not painting him as a hero like most Bollywood biopics attempt to do. You can't judge every movie by the parameter of how moving someone's descent into madness is, sometimes it is what it is and maybe you are not meant to sympathize with this character. Why don't you review the craft instead of being just focused on the plot itself, no one ever goes beyond this. This movie has such an innovative method of storytelling and she barely touched upon that.

Well it's not everyone's movie. Manto is a complex character. One needs perspective to celebrate movie like this. The best part of movies like these are the makers do not shove down the perspective into audiences' throat. It lets the audience decide themselves. The fact that she had to come home and do elaborate research for 6 hours to write a script for the review shows how successful the makers are in achieving what they intended to.

@Sandeep Mehta I still argue Asoka was a movie which was ahead of it's time, atleast in terms of cinematography. The issue was with the characters. They were Bollywoodish. Raees would be a blockbuster in the 90s. The writing was it's downfall. It seemed like Mahira's character was written in half a day. We have seen, heard and celebrated the storyline since eternity. Writer and the director is to be blamed. Both the movies have no comparison with Manto. Manto is an art, the other two are just movies.

Same I also suggest in my last comment in this channel. Her focus is only on storytelling but not on the cenamatic excellence to capture the so-called story.

@Sandeep Mehta Nah I'm not talking about a blockbuster in terms of moolah. Raees was supposed to have every element of blockbuster to it. SRK playing a gangster, Nawaz his arch nemesis, bootlegging, a good item song and what not? The flaw was in the script. There were too many rough edges. The only appreciable thing about the script was illegal encounter at the end, which seemed closer to reality. For instance, look at Silver Lining Playbook, in the final moments Bradley Cooper whispers something in his wife's ears. But the makers chose to not disclose what exactly it was. Which caused quite a bit of uproar amongst simple movie goers. But, serious movie buffs loved it, cos here the audience could make up the any goodbye they wished. Take another instance, in The Whiplash in the final act, the young protoganist walks back on to the stage after terrible insult from his coach and delivers the most magnificent performance of his life. During the entire performance the only reaction the makers chose to show was the drummer's fathers. The audience reaction was never shown, which was beautiful film making. In the movie birdman, when Emma Stone's father jumps from his hospital window, she looks at the sky as if her father's soul is flying towards the sky. But, it was left to the audiences'discretion to decide their own alternative ending. Similarly in the movie hereditary, there is a theory among the movie buff community that the second half of the movie never happens, it was just the mother's imagination. Similarly, in the very divisive movie Mother, a beautiful juxtaposition of climate change, biblical stories is made which needed audience to come home and do a bit of their research to understand what the movie actually meant. Tbh Manto had good elements like the one's I have mentioned above. Raees on the other hand lacked any qualities to become a beautiful poetic artistic intellectual movie akin to Manto. There is no comparison at all. At the end of the day Raees is a good one time watch gangster genre movie, while Manto is poetry on screen.

I googled Manto's stories online last night. Would strongly recommend "Khol Do" available in English as "Open It". A 2 and a half page poignant story that speaks volumes about the horrors of partition and how the perpetrators of women were often from their own community. *Edit* Just saw the film. Khol do, Thanda Gosht and Toba Tek Singh are beautifully picturised. It is indeed heart wrenching that the moment of 'freedom' for the rest of India unleashed an endless saga of rapes and abduction for girls and women in border areas, many of whom jumped into wells to save their honour. What did independence mean for them? None of us ever thinks about what they went through.

I've read his nearly half a dozen stories, and also had the same feeling. Khol Do, is what remains most spine-chilling experience one will ever go through regardless of whatever medium. Be it, writing, visuals or audio. Manto has shown the most destructive self of human through it, i conclude.

@@RohitSingh-qn4mk Sir, the English divided us on communal lines to weaken our power. They made us believe that we are each other's enemies. But what did women do to suffer all this? Women on both sides were raped so as to disgrace their community. Why were little girls raped? Little boys murdered. They were merely a pawn in the entire process. What is more saddening is that politicians continue to play this divide and rule game and after 71 years we still fall prey to it.

I am watching Sucharita since the inception of FC & I think I can easily say that Tyagi is one of the best I have seen/heard in recent times... Her analysis reminds me of Late Nikhat Kazmi... Like thw way she says, all I can say, On 1 to 10 scale.... Sucharita is.... 1:30-2:31 khali yeh 62 seconds dekh lo... Bandi ki talent samajh mein aa jayega...👍👍👍

Yo, the reason it's called not a movie review is because it focuses on storytelling, plot, entertainment value etc. So this gives an average viewer like me who doesnt critique movies but still values good acting, plot etc, an insight into what I am about to watch. It feels like the writer just got tired the hopelessness of the character, so also leaves the audience like that only, without bothering about the end ... And yeah ,"Bol ke lab aazaad.." Failed to make feel anything., like complete dryness in the matter of choosing the lyrics plus the orator of the poem, unlike AB's voice at the end of pink, which literally gave goosebumps
