My first encounter with him was in 1983 in France. Me, a 17-year old "late hippie" from Germany, hitchhiked in the south of France, and I was on the backseat, and next to me an African with his Ghettoblaster. What the hell is this music? Manu Dibango. I went out, and what did I see? A poster: Manu Dibangu, Radio Sur, Live in Montpellier. Sure I went, it was only a couple of days later. I came to town, asked some Africans where the concert was. If he would play, we would know, he's the king … They didn't, for whatever reason. I found the Open Air theater, He played 1-2 hours, And then he moved to the keyboards and went on for another. It was incredible. Next time I saw him in Würzburg, Afrika Festival. First set was wonderful, second too much Pop. 2000 I moved to France, and saw him again in 2019 in Lavault St Anne in a local Jazz Festival, organized by the communities around Montlucon. The mayors of the cities came on stage and were so happy that he--the father of Afrojazz-- had accepted the invitation. "Rather Grandfather", he corrected. I was not sure what would happen. A 85-year old man, the saxophon surely would sound pale. But not at all, from the first note onwards it was a revelation (and even better than in 1983, when I saw him in Montpellier). He was so relaxed, yet powerful, all ambition was history, he had done what he had to do in this life. And it was such a nice ambience, inmidst of the nature, next to a river. He was probably inspired by all this as well. Sadly, one year later, he died. And I'm deeply grateful, as he inspired me so much, as I later did myself some afro- latin- jazz on saxophon (and played in Burghausen, but only in the context of the Jazzwoche with my band Oimbo kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH6ulXSVa5p_aKc , but of cause not on the main stage, but in a bar. It was fun as well) ... Thanks so much, Manu!

What an amazing story!! I’m a “late hippie” too! I wish I could’ve seen him but I discovered his music far too late. He still lives on in our hearts and minds as an absolute legend of African jazz.

Thank you Africa Festival Team for uploading this in the best quality .mkv. Also the people here in Würzburg are great, thanks ! If I look to "Nuits du Sud" in Vence, what a shame for Vence! You can find it here in YT, but the Musik is best Manu quality, even better, most of all the singers Celine and Valerie from Africa.
