Back in the 90's, this video ( a VHS tape back then! ) changed my life. Changed the way I play, the way I construct my cymbal setup, and my accents. That "adding some color to the music" he says completely stuck with me forever!

Manu just shows that you don't need to go very fast or be able to play lots of deluxe fills to still be a good drummer. He keeps time without flaw and adds in smaller fills only when necessary, which is really the essence of what drumming is about.

A great example of musicality over technique! As a piano player and composer, Manu has a great sense of melody and rhythm. He's also got some fine and creative chops. But more than anything it's about his groove and all those taste notes he throws in between. This is from a Zildjian cymbals video from some years back. And that's Ian Croft, now editor of web mag. i-Drum.

Fantastic drummer! Manu Katche´ is amazing! From a drummer
@therealbrentrolland10 жыл бұрын
I loved Manu's note about having his cymbals and drums "breathe"-the personification is both enthralling and academic, and makes total sense to boot. I am doing exactly that now with my own kit, as my heads are not muffled and my cymbals "float" with the help of quick-set clamps that do not screw on the threads of the cymbal holders. I love the open, big, natural sounds that I am getting from just letting my instruments be unadulterated. It's great to hear this philosophy in words and in action.
@Dydreth8 жыл бұрын
+Brent Rolland Are you using a drum ring on your snare? As a sound guy and a former drummer, I find snares produce a lot of nasty overtones, especially during live performances.

I love this video because is from a time and from a guy that left the notes as they were placed, no protools edition bull*hit. I love hearing how is a little rushed sometimes, because he is reacting and making decisions in real time, manu always plays jazzy and in a creative way even when he plays rock or other style. You can recognize him just hearing one bar of drumming. His sound, groove and ideas are unique. And I loved hearing the first take always the best. Manu would be one of my best drummers ever.

Great video. Thanks for posting! FYI, I've almost always seen Manu use a K crash (and smaller straight A), and an A Ping Ride (except for some of his more recent European jazz stuff, where he'll sometimes use a lighter ride). I guess Zildjian was trying to push the 'new' A Customs when this video was made? Haha.

so laid back and behind the beat yet still spot on...
Manu is a great drummer, period! And the mistakes of a profesional are seldom noticed, and in fact, groove: At 5:47, thinking that the B section was coming, Manu played a fill to set it up, but the B section was several bars ahead. He noticed it, kept on, and set it up again in the right place. At around 6:43, just after he played the E.F.X cymbal, he accidentally played an "air stroke" with his right stick. Just little details that make one appreciate how professionals deal with mistakes.
