Say what you want about your best drummer, but Sting, Joni and Peter sure know how to pick them: Manu, Vinnie and Omar. I’d add Steve Gadd and Keith Carlock.

Manu is in my all-time top 5 drummers. Besides his work with Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Joni Mitchell, his playing on Tears For Fears' "Seeds of Love" CD ("Badman's Song" is a prime example) is incredible. He's one of the most musical drummer I've ever experienced.

This is great! But I would have spent a lot of time discussing what made Manu such a stylish and graceful player. More specifically, he moves like a ballerina across the kit, the up-strokes are as important as the downs -bascially. Saw him many times with Peter, and his live feel was so great. Could never get over how amazing his live drum sound was, just jaw dropping, the snare hits in Shock the Monkey for example, OMG the best!

Wow! Great interview with one of the greatest drummers of our time. Check out his albums as well as his work with other artists on the ECM record label. He has taken the groove to a whole new level. He, a Frenchman, has taken a American rhythmic concept (funk) and elevated it to a classical art form, which is understandable considering his classical background. That he uses melody and harmony as focus points for his playing is evident in his open, fluid and very musical style. He has chops but I can tell it's more important to him to leave plenty of space for melody and harmony to breathe.

Once me and my little family were waiting for our plane (can't remember where to) and in the embarking area were a handful of musicians, easy to spot with their cases. There we had Manu Katché and Richard Bona, both of whom I instantly recognized. Not sure who were the others, strong possibility Stefano di Battista was with them. It's always a bit weird spotting musicians you appreciate in the wild like that. I don't want to romanticize about it but... what a life this must be. Travelling on a regular basis, palying music with people equally talented, sharing your stuff with audiences all over the world.

Respect Mr. Katche,,,I've heard you early in my younger days. And boy, that phrasing on toms and splashes forever remained in my head. I remember being in Verona (Italy) in the Armani store, and listening music playing on the store's HiFi,,,,,Italian artist definitely, but the groove behind, the splashes and the feel....Nothing said more Katche than that,,,,,That was in 1989 I believe,,,,the guy was already all over the place
