Best point i've heard made on daily driving a manual. The skill needs to be kept current. Driving a manual once a week for a couple hours on backroads vs every day in real world traffic....no comparison in terms of driving skill and finesse required. People have it backwards...should be manuals for daily driving; DCTs and autos for absolute acceleration and fast shifts on the track. Daily drive your manual cars!

Yes! It’s like playing the guitar every day vs playing two or three times per month. The every day player will be better even if both are good enough to get the job done haha

One exception I'd make is if you're commuting in heavy stop and go traffic that's much slower than your car's idle speed. I've driven manual only while commuting in heavy traffic for 15 years. I didn't think it was so bad until I got a vehicle that doesn't need to do that. It is SO much better in stop and go traffic. Going back to manual in those conditions felt absolutely terrible, particularly if you just got an intense run done and your feet are sore. Using those sore /exhausted muscles having to feather the gas and clutch is definitely not fun, and I've had muscles spaz out from that. The technique feels as natural as ever. I never have problems switching. But I've quickly realized just how needlessly inconvenient it is to go at a snail's pace for an hour.

Pressing the traction control button once gives you MDM, twice or long press is fully off. You can also make your own mode with MDM turned on for the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel. You nailed it with the compromise of the M2, but how that’s part of the charm. It’s one of the best in its class when it comes to being sporty and livable every day.

I tested both manual and DCT M2C. After driving manual in ALL my 911's over the last 30 years, I decided the DCT was the way to go for my M2 Comp purchase. Love it. Absolutely lightning fast shifts and the DCT will not be around much longer so it was a no brainer for me. I club raced 911's and am a excellent manual driver but I couldnt come close to the speed of the DCT.

Can totally relate! Remember it like it was yesterday. First day in a new school, 5th class, 11 years old. Dad picked me up and at a empty parking lot he told me to switch seats. Could barely look over the steering wheel and stalled three times in a row. The rush I felt shifting from 1st to 2nd gear without any throttle... Thought I was a F1 driver😂😂😂 good times.

I've had this car for a year now, and daily drive it. Just hit 10k miles last month. Took it to the track (Carolina Motorsports Park) for the first time last week completely stock, minus a DOT4 brake fluid flush a few days prior. This car is a riot! You mention the brakes a lot in this review, and for good reason...they are incredible, and held up all day through five 20-minute sessions. Power delivery is excellent. You do feel the weight of the car, but it's such a great all-around package that it doesn't matter. And at the end of the day, I had a comfortable 2.5 hour drive back home. The M2C isn't necessarily perfect at anything, but it is great at a lot of things-- and that's what makes it a fantastic car.

Yeah, it seems like the 1-2 shift is annoying on modern BMWs. Hard to get it smooth. Also, my family's manual F30 328i revs relatively high at 80 mph. Still gets 35 mpg at that speed. And, because the revs are high, it just takes off at that speed.

I've wondered how this car compared between my e39 M5 and e36 M3. It appears to be sized closer to the E36 but the weight, power and sound are definitely closer to the e39. Probably good fun. In the end of the day, the e36 is the more satisfying and fun car to drive, the power of the M5 made it a bit boring as it got to ultra legal speeds way too quickly.

I’ve owned 2 GTR’s (R35) and a 2018 M2. Although the GTR is heavier, it cornered WAY better than the M2 and layed super flat in hard corners. Loving your videos man. One thing I would recommend you do when you do these car reviews is something like a general scoring or something similar to Doug Demuro’s DougScore so the viewer can get an objective number/rating. We watch for your personality so it would really increase my attention while watching to wonder what your scoring will be at the end. Keep up the great work!
@TedwardDrives
@TedwardDrives 3 жыл бұрын
Scoring is too subjective and relative. Cars can stand on their own and provide an experience without having to stack up against another vehicle. If I drove 3 Mclaren’s in a week followed by a sonata it doesn’t seem fair to score the Hyundai 😂. If I’ve done my job right you can assign your own value and score to the driving experience
@grantmarks7429
@grantmarks7429 3 жыл бұрын
@@TedwardDrives Right, but that’s the point. You’re reviewing cars with your personality. As far as I know you aren’t a professional car reviewer, we watch for your personality and input. That’s why I think that maybe scoring cars in separate categories would be the move. I know it would keep me more interested, and your videos would then generate more attention because they would be scored comparisons of cars in their own class. All from your perspective, of course. I was ready to tear into BMW for the pricing on this, but it seems in line for it's performance. There aren't many options available as it seems like they fully equip it. $59k. Also, hat tip to whomever at BMW decided that cloth seats are a better choice for seating. Now please propagate that as available/standard choice up and down the line, or at least let us custom order it that way.

What? There are no cloth seats for this. Or is that your point?

awesome car but no reason for the short final drive. 3k @ 80mph is unacceptable with modern tech & current gas prices.

I'm looking to pick up an M2 for myself this year (granted I want the original M2, not the competition). How do you think these cars drive during winter? I never had a RWD before and I'm unsure if I should drive it all year around or pick up some old cheap car to drive during winter and stay safe. Really unsure what to do in this aspect.

You need proper tires if you get snow. If it has summer tires, they do not work in the snow. If you live in a heavy snow area and plan to use the m2, you will NEED snow tires. You probably minimally need all season tires. I have a m2 manual but have 5 total cares and would not drive my m2 in the snow(Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires).

those analog gauges look so much better than the new digital ones imo

They're semi-optoelectric... when you turn the lights off, the panel goes almost all black except for the silver rings and needles. The bottom right corner along with the centre section is also fully digital (including that small "efficiency" gauge).

When I grow up, I want a car like this since I want a manual car as a first car. Best sounding M2!

How is this little BMW so heavy?? A GT350R is a huge car comparatively, yet only weighs 100 lb more than this thing.

Yea if you live in LA like me. You need dct. The shifts in the dct are brutal tho, feels more like a race car with dct. The way it shifts in auto mode is insane as well. (If you press dsc button instead of hood it goes into Mdm mode).

Hmmm, seems like Ol' Teddy is having trouble smoothly shifting in this car. I appreciate that it has a manual, and that's great, but is it a crummy transmission?

if you didnt read the disclaimer partway through the video: The Clutch Delay Valve is what's doing it. A lot of manual BMWs have this and most are modded to disable that

Pro Tip: Avoid crossing your hands when making a turn; you lose some control over your steering precision. Keep them at around 10-2 at most times.
