One would do much better with Staedtler Mars 661 boards made in Germany. If price is an object, just get a t-square and a smooth board with some perpendicular staight edges. Thanks again!

@kjfacilities-maint9 ай бұрын
Yes. Before AutoCAD was invented, engineers/drafters had to use manual drafting tools. Obviously an AutoCAD program would be much quicker and easier, if you’re doing Aerospace drafting.

Kevin. really like the video. Next year I want to teach 5th graders some very basic design for drafting just so they can experience and touch the tools. (Not a draft or engineering background on my part FYI) Do you have a technique for teaching how to center a drawing. For example one lesson plan would be to draw a 7" by 5" "house border" plus an 2"x 2" garage attached to the house. Could you show how to center any project from the start of the project? Sorry for the naive question
@kjfacilities-maint Жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea Jim, great question too! You can measure from the edge of the paper over 5.50” (assuming you are using 8.50” x 11” paper horizontally ) and lightly draw a center line vertically at the center of your paper, then measure up from the bottom 4.25 inches and lightly draw a horizontal line. Now, to make the house & garage centered on your paper, measure over from the vertical centerline 4.50 inches to the left lightly draw a vertical line. Then measure over from the vertical centerline 4.50 inches to the right and draw a vertical line. Then, from the horizontal centerline, measure up 2.50 inches and draw a horizontal line. Measure down from the center horizontal line 2.50 inches and draw another horizontal line. That will give you a centered rectangle to draw your house and garage centered inside of, assuming you’re drawing a front orthographic view of the house and garage, not a 3D isometric view. I will try to publish an example of this before the end of June.
@McRaeJim Жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin, I will give this some practice and thanks for the response. Yes 8.5 x 11 paper is the base line to be working with. I was going to have them start with a 1/2" boarder (1" at the bottom.) Background: Some teachers had an assignment for students to draw a community using buildings and roads and incorporating geometric shapes. I came into help a student and busted out a T-square and some basic triangles. I was helping one student but found myself surrounded like I was a rock star. None of these students had ever seen or held basic drafting tools. The protractor was a big hit. None the less it occurred to me these kids had been stuck inside with Covid Protocols for the past two years, and these tools are not used any longer, not taught any longer and dad's / mom's might not have these tools around the house like my father did. I had one teacher say "What is the point? It is all done on computer anyway? Then she walked by me in the hall way working with the students and admitted she was surprised by the interest of the kids doing something that didn't involve computers. Anyway if you have any time to make a content using these tools for teaching tips, and simple project ideas, I would find it useful. Encouraging you to keep up the good work.

Yes it is, not too often though... In fact, for the first few years of my career, (early 2000's) when I would design a piece of custom shop equipment for my boss, I would use manual drafting. Every situation is different. My employer didn't have an ongoing need to pay for an AutoCAD subscription.
