This art takes a hugeeee time and effort. And its so painful to hear turist "how less for that?" They do when go to buy a LV bag? Those talented women are doing an art from centuries. Its a "ancestry art in this time". Please, when you came to our countries dont wants pay less they ask! All our works are doing by hand! You cant fund this one in a factory. Each stich is making for someone which feed an entire family with that. All mayan culture is rich, and this art must to be a relique in any family whom brought it. A real threasure. We share with Guatemala same kind of art, but they are the masters on this one. God bless those women. They makes us proud of our etnias.

Yes, it is outdated an inneficient. Modern technology allows us to have better quality products for less money and faster. Too bad people who refuse to modernize think the rest of the world should appreciate their wasted time and effort.
@tatortotty5 жыл бұрын
@@willyjimmy8881 Clearly you have never seen this work in person You apparently do not place much value on artistry, skill, beauty and tradition or even human dignity for that matter. Yes it takes longer to weave with a backstrap loom, but you can't say the quality is less. The Chinese knock-offs that are coming into the market now are less expensive but inferior in quality and beauty. And not everyone gets the opportunity to work in a sweatshop - some put food on the table and send their children to school through work like this. And I wholeheartedly agree that the idea of trying to negotiate a lower price with an artisan whose monthly income may not even approach a typical tourists hotel bill for one or two nights is obscene. Shame on anyone who gloats over their "great deal" in a Guatemalan marketplace.

As an amateur weaver myself, I am full of respect for this exquisite work. I know how labour intensive weaving is, & know that people generally do not understand this. More people should watch these wonderful weavers at work & appreciate the cultural aspect, which is the same in many other parts of the world.

I sure hope these women were paid accordingly. Masterpieces like this require compensation.
@Marialla.5 жыл бұрын
I seriously doubt it. Imagine how much even a minimum wage worker would earn for laboring 90 days, all day long. Now imagine how much their labor would be worth if they were valued as someone with unique and specialized knowledge and dexterity, as well as patience to stay on one job so faithfully. There's no way they were compensated more than a tiny fraction of that value. Possibly they were paid commensurate with the value of a few yards of machine-woven cloth, or the price of an ordinary store-bought blouse, which may have been as little as a thousandth of what their hours of labor warrant.

Gracias por mostrarle al mundo la riqueza cultural y textil de GUATEMALA. I am a maya k'iche'. I feel so proud to see how our art is showing to the world. Nowadays, many traditional mayan weaving techniques have been still preserved by passing them down from generations to generations. However, modernism and social problems are factors than influence the preservation of our textiles. Nowadays, a mayan women weavers association named "Movimiento Nacional de Tejedoras" is struggling to require the congress of Guatemala the creation of laws to protect their creations and designs from machine imitation that is expanding in local markets, replacing handmade huipiles and textiles, because of lack of laws that protect our collective copyright. On the other hand, many fashion designers have taken the designs of Guatemalan Weavers and either copied them outright or sell the products on-line without consent of the creators. Machine huipiles and textiles are cheaper than handmade ones, as a consecuence, many weavers are being affected because they do not have economic incomes anymore, and some weavers decide to quit weaving and look for other income sources. If machine huipiles and textiles replace handmade ones, techniques, knowolodge and a culture will be in danger to desappear. Like in any other countries, In Guatemala is an urgency to approve laws that can protect and support mayan textiles from imitation or or sell the products on-line without consent of the creators. Nevertheless, It is also necessary to create regulations to promote guatemalan indigenous social and economic development to overcome poverty and social inequality. As a maya k'iche, I will continue struggling to look for a better future for my people, a future where we can have a social, economic and political development in an equitable way, without quitting our culture and the skilfull making of our unique handmade and colorful textiles.

It’s always best to hear ancestral teachings word for word, with tone and connotations included:) also those bordados are sacred designs we shouldn’t ever rush them, it happens all the time but it’s disrespectful. Weaving was a spiritual tool not just for clothes, but spiritually was targeted in Guatemala so we can see it survives in different ways. It’s sad that you guys rushed this hardworking pregnant women so you could have a “finished product”. The important thing is that they share the knowledge, and they didn’t have to. I hope they were generously compensated not only for their work, the product, but also the expert course on weaving they shared with you to distribute.
