As a Protestant I was brought up to believe that 'decor' distracts from prayer and faith. That said as a building it is incredible. My mother had strangely always wanted to visit Rome and the Vatican but she passed away this summer without having done so. When my sister married, instead of an exotic honeymoon, she chose to follow the path of Christ from his birthplace to his place of execution and then resurrection. I visted Rome many years ago but not long enough to visit the Basicila sadly.

Décor is not an essential part of prayer and faith. In fact, it can sometimes become a distraction or even lead to idolatry.
@brucetheloon2 күн бұрын
The concept of decor distracting from prayer and faith is an interesting outcome of the Reformation. Ostentatious display of the wealth gained by corrupt Popes, cardinals and bishops is definitely part of the driving force behind Luther and other's leading to the Reformation, but stripping the decor feels like swinging the pendulum to the other extreme. Some of the early structure of the current St Peter's was funded by the sale of indulgences, but that ceased after the Council of Trent in the mid 1500s and the great artistic works like the artwork in the dome and the Bernini art came in the early 1600s driven by the Italian Renaissance. Displaying the beauty of the art done as a celebration of God feels like a good thing to me as it is an inspiration. Something like the Michelangelo ceiling of the Sistine chapel was not done for the money, but to celebrate the story of God and humanity. Our modern materialistic interpretation may call it a priceless artwork and assign monetary value to it, but is that a valid classification of a painting intended to tell the story of God and Adam? I'm not saying churches should have gold statues and million dollar paintings, but surely something like a stained glass window telling the story of Eden or Noah or the Crucifixion can provide inspiration and a means of contemplation of God?
@TheFiown2 күн бұрын
@@brucetheloon Interesting response thank you. I grew up in a Protestant environement, our church was a hall with no indication of purpose except the lectern for the bible and a simple alter, no paintings, no stained glass. Not having seen what other religious buildings were like, I thought that this was the norm. When later in life I saw inside Catholic churches, they were so at odds that they didn't seem like places of prayer but it wasn't a critisicm in any way. I have visited many churches in different countries and they are places where I usually go to find peace in my daily life, to talk to myself, to light a candle for those I love. I have in my house many religious statues including a very large St Antoine, my favorite Saint. I have a collection of 'benitiers' over my bed and many crucifixes for their beauty. I remember going into one particular church in the town of Nimes, a rather squarish church but beautiful proportions. A lady came out of the vestry and asked me to follow her into the back rooms that were lined in paintings and filled with beautiful antique furniture and objects. She asked me to speak of my faith and I firstly apologised and told her that my faith was different to hers before speaking about how I saw faith, god and spiritual life. My faith is based on simple common sense, we do not ask pardon for sinning as to think about sinning already being a sin we should stop there and not go ahead then ask for forgiveness. I pray within myself, not in a particular place and I have total believe in a higher power, one that keeps those who believe, strong and safe. I remember many years ago a conversation with a young catholic child who asked me why the Christians in the Arena didn't just verbally renounce God to save their lives and then still go on believing, for him it made sense. I told him to hold his breath so he did but not for long then let out a gasp and asked me what that had to do with faith. I told him that for those who 'believe', then breathing like faith is not something you can choose to stop, it is the life force of your being. I lost my mum this summer and buried her with my little brothers ashes in her arms on top of my little sisters coffin, in a beautiful little village cemetry against a wall in the sun. My dad is not far from them and for me they are all safe and alive in my heart. I don't generally talk about my beliefs as everyone has their own and the path has to be found through life, through struggle, sometimes through loss and pain but once found it heals. Life is loss married to love, both must go hand in hand to make sense. God bless X

What a great tour. Your usual high-quality production was a pleasant way to spend 16 minutes. I am not a Catholic. However, I found this the most fascinating of videos. To think, if those remains are really that of St Peter, you were in touching distance from the man who walked with Jesus, talked with Jesus and denied Jesus. I felt an unusual feeling in my heart when you said it could be him. It was indescribable, I felt moved.
@joskecollin3 күн бұрын
At minute 14:10 you see a truly surprising asymmetry, right at the very core of the basilica: stone | niche | stone | stone in another colour, without a similar one on the left! Behind that structure is what remains of Peter's original tomb, which had deteriorated much until Constantine decided to build the first basilica. It has deteriorated so much that it needed to be reinforced with an extra wall on the right. And later, during persecutions, Peter's bones were relocated in this new wall, so it had to be respected when Constantine built his basilica. And it was again respected when the second basilica was built...

5:20. A small group of us including 5 American priests were standing here waiting to enter the necropolis. We had to wait for several minutes because Pope John Paul II was returning from his South American tour and it was customary for him to visit the tomb of St. Peter when he returns to the Vatican. 3 of the “properly attired” priests were asked to stand next to the entrance and were able to greet JPII. We stood a few feet back but nevertheless felt the aura. Thank you for an excellent presentation.

Hi Manuel. When I was younger, I traveled to Rome, as part of a European Trip. I went to the Vatican, attended mass in the chapel area behind the main altar. After that mass, we took the elevator up to the inner staircase that leads up the Cupola. I climbed the spiral stairs up the inside of the Cupola and to the very top, where one can stand on a very small area, looking out over the Vatican Gardens. I could not believe just how large the statues along the front of the Basilica were. Back then, I guess security was not as tight as it must be today (there). I also remember touring the Grotto beneath the main altar, where St. Peter is interred. Pope John Paul II was still Pope. Years later JP II came to Miami on a pilgrimage, and it rained cats, dogs, and little fishes. We stayed up all night long waiting on the Papal Mass with JP II. It was a total wash out. The Cross that sat on the site where the Papal Mass was to take place, is now sitting on the grounds of the Diocesan Offices of the Church in North Miami. I have a photo of the Pieta on my bookcase that I snapped way back when.

The Vatican people were wise to invite Manuel to do a video on the Tomb of St. Peter. When you are standing before the Confessio, there are two flame burning. One represents the location of the tomb, the other the location of Peter's bones. Speculation is that the bones were removed from the tomb and hidden in a niche in the nearby wall to prevent their looting during the barbarian invasions. The pallia worn by Metropolitan archbishops are woven by the nuns at Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. The Pope bestows them during the Solemnity of St. Peter and Paul on June 29. The video shows a peribolos corridor which leads to several chapels and the tomb of Pope Pius XII. Manuel refers to Peter as an apostle. He certainly was, but that understates his importance. He is the Prince of the Apostles, the foremost apostle, as well as the first Pope. Manuel is to be congratulated for another superb video!!
