I've never seen Hitchens stop talking if someone tries to talk over the top and interrupt him. Even back in 1994 he would power through any interruption to finish his point. That always struck me with Hitchens, he never stopped half way through a point just because someone tried to take over the talking, he'd simply keep going until he had voiced every word he wanted to say.

Or maybe not: the host, Charlie Rose, almost certainly briefed the guests before the show that a relaxed, polite atmosphere was an integral part of the format. All of his many shows I've seen are like that, albeit not all are as good. When you compare the intelligence of Hitchens and Wolf to an average US Republican cabinet member (several have been on Rose's shows), you'll understand.

Agreed. They're not as radical as feminists, partly because no one gives them any attention or power to do so; but they do try their bests at being the "better victims." Though I agree men disadvantaged in multiple areas, I still feel like MRas are just a reactionary movement towards feminism. Well, you've just essentially proven the point that men's rights activists are trying to make, namely that they will never be given the same attention as feminists more or less because they are men and men's suffering is always undermined even in modern society. This has an awful lot to do with biology and evolutionary psychology but it's high time we turned the tide in an age where technological advances have made this innate urge in men to sacrifice themselves and in women to expect this sacrifice irrelevant. I'm sorry to say this but you strike me as someone who has never researched the MRM and if you have I'm compelled to believe you had already made up your mind about their agenda before doing so. The Men's Rights Movement are essentially fighting for the same human rights everyone would consider to be a given in the case of women. They are a direct and necessary response to feminist's belittling of men through the last decades. Take male genital mutilation for example. This practice is entirely barbaric and disgusting and has no medically proven benefits. Circumsision punishes boys by removing one of the most sensitive parts of the penis, the foreskin. It kills dozens of boys in the west alone every year and can cause infections and physical abnormalities in INFANT CHILDREN yet it is still considered completely normal. This is absolutely repulsive and in my opinion it very much shows the sort of attitude surrounding men's suffering. The western world has long since abolished female genital mutilation. Why do you suppose that is? Is one child's suffering more important than anothers? MRAs talk about men's suicide statistics, 4 men kill themselves for every woman. MRAs talk about the homelessness of men, around 75% of homeless people are men and in spite of this there are virtually no options when it comes to shelters for homeless men or the men whose women beats their ass day in and day out. Men are more prone to alcoholism and drug addiction, every form of mental illness. Where is the male privilege in this? MRAs talk about the sentencing gap where men suffer longer prison sentences than women for the exact same crime while feminists harp on about a wage gap myth that has long since been debunked. MRAs talk about the court systems which favor women heavily over men. Family courts where women are seen as the optimal parent in spite of every bit of research proving single mothers to be the absolute worst thing that can happen to a child. I've heard men crying as they talk about how they were abused by their female spouse, finally plucked up the courage to call the police which then proceeded to arrest them, the victims, based on something called the Duluth model, a DIRECT result of modern feminism. Feminist domestic violence statistics are absolute bullshit as well as any other statistics these ignorant professional victims pull out of their ass, women beat men just as much if not more than men beat women. If a woman physically weaker then yourself insults you in every way, shape and form, shoves you, slaps you, screams at you and you finally shove her against a wall or punch her square in the face, how would you react when the police came and arrested you while she filed for divorce, took half of everything you ever earned before and after you even met her and proceeded to take your children away from you as well? This is how it happens in most cases when women tell you that their ex-husband was a piece of shit and it's absolutely infuriating. But I stray from the point. The media's negative portrayal of men, a father's right to choose whether a woman has their child or not, the list goes on. So, please, do me a favor and tell me which of these things you acknowledge and condone or disagree with. Which of these claims is even remotely comparable to the bullshit claims of a third wave feminist?

@Carol Yes you're correct, but he's not claiming that there's literally no situation where the meaning of the term objectification is ever carried out or that it's a good thing. He's specifically saying that the word is overused in a manner that doesn't correspond to it's literal meaning, through highlighting the fact that because "objectification" contains the word "object" people easily misunderstand its applicability to any case where a person is the "object" of your attention. This is just a cognitive error that commonly happens where one word means two different things, but even knowledgeable people begin attributing the first meaning when only the second case applies. He quips "we're all objects to each other," because obviously we all view each other as an external object of attention, but clearly there's no implication of degradation unless it's literally present.

This one-sided comment or attitude is an insult, not only to the person being told this, as if we are incapable of having more sophisticated influxes than that of a boner when faced with such an image, but also to the woman on the magazine. He's making a sensible call for making this into something more than just a matter of the proverbial "meat-market"-discussion. If we were to do so, we might also suddenly see this kind of imagery as less "problematic", while simultaneously being able to get along more easily. What's the problem here? I honestly have trouble understanding how these remarks aren't coming across as sensible and justified to you.

Stoicism is good. I'm a stoic in the female sense. It's good to have control over your emotions, especially in situations just like this one. What really strikes me in this talk is how rational and calm all the participants are. They all for the most part disagree with Hitchens views, but they attack his ideas and not him personally. Everyone is striving for clearer articulation of the truth, the way a debate should be. If this were today, they would be calling him sexist and a bigot and there would be people protesting Hitchens and yelling shame. Really shows you have radical the far left has come in 22 years.

Radical compared to the center-right of the 90's - perhaps. But not radical for the 90's. There definitely were people that would have behaved as you said around in the 90's.

You do realize this video is about Hitchens view of feminism at that time and it doesn't show the entire debate. It clearly edited most of the other views out. I saw the other participants show mostly in their body language a little shock, some respect and some doubt. I doubt many people could think Hitchens sexist or bigoted. Well, they are indoctrinated into cult like modes of thinking, a lot in the way men are indoctrinated into machoism, the symbols of it being traditional forms of masculine traits, seen as virtues in men. Let's be honest, he will be missed. We don't get many thinkers like him. One appears a generation, and a handful a century. He goes into my hall of heroes along with other examples like Paglia and Arendt. Mind you, my list is personal, and I only mention the names of persons who have been examples of moral and intellectual courage for me. For example, I would add Sam Harris, George Orwell, Joseph Campbell, Michel de Montaigne, Voltaire, Oscar Wilde... I am sure your list is as compelling.
