My mam was from Medomsley Co Durham, and worked at Consett Steelworks for 3 and half years in the steelworks during WW2 driving a crane hauling tons of steel for the war effort, she then came south to London to be a volunteer auxiliary nurse helping the dying and severely injured servicemen evacuated from the liberation of Europe. She was the most beautiful woman I have ever or will ever meet, and I can see her tapping her foot to this while she knitted warm clothes for others.

Im a Smoggie from a town a little south of Newcastle (Middlesbrough). Some of the best fellas I ever worked with were Geordies.....an excellent breed!! Anyroad.....this is ultimately a working class song, folk had to travel far and wide to earn a crust...from all parts of the country, still do. But never forget yer roots. If you asked a Geordie in Australia or Germany or America 'are you from Newcastle?'.......they wouldnt say yes....they'd say.......WHY AYE MAN!!😄
