Many Concerned After Incidents Of Samsung Microwaves Bursting Into Flames

Heating up a bowl of chili nearly turned into a disaster when flames started shooting from a family's brand new microwave; CBS's Dave Savini reports.

This exact same thing was happening with Whirlpool microwaves back in the late 1990s early 2000s. What was happening is that plastic panel is called a Wave Guide cover. It protects the magnetron antenna. What happen with Whirlpool was they were using a material that contained fine fragments of metal, and we all know what happens with metal in a microwave. The wave guide covers were being made from recycled materisls. They had to do a recall on both whitlpool and kenmore models, and replace the wave guide covers. I think it was the biggest recall in microwave history. Now why is this happening again, but with a different brand? I tell you these appliances today are pure junk. All of them.

We had the same issue. I called Samsung, and they were indifferent. Offered to ship them the microwave at my expense, so that they could t-shoot, and they did not care. Thank you for reporting this. This could kill someone. I would encourage everyone to unplug these microwaves when not in use.

Just moved into a house with a Samsung microwave. Within the first year the Samsung microwave started burning and making a crackling noise like wires were arcing. Model ME18H704SFS

Ours just started making popping arcing noise and smelled like electrical fire. I'm not going to bother troubleshooting it, I'm getting a different brand. This is the second Samsung that died.

My microwave almost caught fire today. It burned out with lot of smoke. It could have been disastrous if teenagers used it.

These microwaves overheat due to not being able to breathe. Mine is keeps kicking itself off and as of today I’m unplugging it. Apparently it’s supposed to have 3 to 4 inches of space between the sides, top, and bottom so that it won’t suffocate, but the space my microwave is in won’t allow that. Samsung also says that you can reduce the cooking power to 50% to avoid overheating

This morning, my microwave...which was OFF caught on fire, exploded and caught my house on fire. I have thousands of dollars in damage.

Mine just did this. It turned on by itself. I unplugged it and still smelled electrical smoke. So I just unbolted it and have put it outside. If I had not been awake late I would not have known until my house was on fire.

Mine was a 2020. Literally could have just killed my family. I am so upset. Everyone was asleep and I just so happened to be awake sitting in the living room when I heard it start running by itself. Samsung is going to kill people.

My samsung ME18H704SFW/AA is not heating and starting to smell burnt plastic. It was made in April 2019... Makes me mad that I can not even reach samsung in a decent way.

brand new one 5 months ago with a plastic ring for the turntable. I have had 2 burned and cracked glass plates so far

Have same fire in my microwave, burned out. I have all appliance by Samsung and all of them give me a problems, will never buy it again. Better to focus on cellphones for this company.

Samsung says "that is too bad" they say that the microwave food cover may not have been microwave safe... What? the only function of the cover is to cover food in the microwave and they wonder if I got it from Samsung or elsewhere, I am speechless. So, I should only buy Samsung items to put inside the Samsung microwave to be on the save side
