In 2019, just before the pandemic shut almost everything down, I heard that Paul McCartney was coming to South Carolina. I live in North Carolina, just about an hours drive from where he would be performing. I raised my son, listening to all the great music from the '60s & 70's and he is a huge fan of the Beatles and especially Paul. I asked my son if he would like to go see him in concert. He said "I don't have the money". I asked him a second time, "Would you like to go see Paul McCartney in concert ?" He answered again "Mom, I don't have the money." I said "This is your last chance. Would you like to go see Paul McCartney in concert ?" He answered, "Sure", I said okay and bought 3 tickets for me, him and his wife. It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen, made even better because I got to see a music legend with 2 of the people I love most in the world.

Ya, I missed that last tour. I've seen Paul twice in my past. But skipped this last tour because his voice isn't doing that great these days. But I completely regret it. I saw Paul in my early teens and then in my early 20's. That was the 90's lol. I'm a fool for missing this last go around. I really don't care what his voice sounds like. The man is beyond a legend. In 100 years the Beatles will be taught in school. As infamous as Motzart. I'm lucky enough to be living in this era.

My mom who grew up with The Beatles, would play their records while we were home, either doing chores or just playing around, so needless to say I also grew up listening to The Beatles. Its a bond I have with my mom that either of my 2 other siblings have. A few years ago I took my mom to see Paul McCartney play in San Francisco. It was an spectacular experience to listen to the songs live and by him, but the best moment of the night came when he played the first Beatles song of the night. With that first note, shivers went down my spine and goosebumps covered my arms. I fought back tears, but when I looked over to see my mom, I saw her cleaning up some tears. I couldn't help myself anymore and let the tears flow. A memory I'll never forget. Even now writing this I hold back tears, with shivers and goosebumps.

The night after my brother graduated from high school in 1974 we put a junkyard automatic transmission into his ‘66 Mustang, and left the next morning, following our parents in the family station wagon. The Mustang had an 8-track player and one tape - Band On The Run. We listened to it on repeat the entire trip. I still like that album.

My memories of this album stretch back to 1973 when it was released. On trips to and from my grandma's house I would hear this on the radio. When I got a transistor radio for my birthday the following summer, it was popping up on our local radio station WLS/Chicago quite frequently. It was one of my first albums I ever purchased with my own money. Hands down one of the best albums of that era and all time. This story about it flashes out the album and breathes more life into it. But mom would take us to the local public library where there were hundreds of records. I was in grade 2 when I first listened to a Beatles record. It was magic. I was hooked. A year later Say Say Say came out. I couldn’t understand how Paul McCartney could collab with Michael! I was too young to understand the history. Anyways it’s amazing that the Beatles including all of their projects, have been with me all these years. Now as a 50+ parent of 3, I’m so lucky to share the magic with my kids. There was music every summer in Field of Dreams. I forget the other bands but I did know their music and the headliner was Ringo & His All Starr Band. The coolest thing was that our parking lot was the staging area for all the roadies and it was closed to everyone else. We had a ball with the roadies! They loved the chance to take a shower and didn't have to use porta potties. Much pizza was eaten and although we couldn't see the stage, we could hear every note. That was a great 3 days!

Every word I'd ever written for any class. All of it. Gone. What burned me was, it was _worthless_ to them, and _priceless_ to me - I'd have paid whatever I had to get it back, but that wasn't a thing that could happen.

How does any of this make any sense even to YOU?

Your interviews are so good because you are so interested and invested in the lives and music of your subjects. You know these people! And you come to them with your heart and soul open, welcoming, compassionate, respectful of them and their achievements. I can understand why your school mate came to your defense, telling your bullies to leave Reader alone, he liked your music. I like your music too. Listening to the histories you relate, discussing the different interpretations of songs, you have even encouraged me to actually enjoy songs I thought I hated. That WAS a good song! I can't believe I'd completely forgotten about it! But having been reminded, I now recall it vividly. Memory is a funny thing. I've always wondered, if someone had recorded all of the events of my life without my knowing, and then handed it to me in a few weeks (my 60th b-day), how much of it would I remember? In other words, have I truly forgotten the things, or have I simply not thought of them in long enough that it is AS IF they're forgotten, but a simple reminder tells me that they're really not forgotten at all? Does that make any sense?

@JamesThompson-zk1ht20 күн бұрын
If I had to pin it down to one decade (meaning one 10-year period, not necessarily beginning or ending on a zero), I think it would be '65-'74. I'd like it better if it was stretched out to maybe '61-'78. Either way, I believe I could make an excellent, rational, well-argued and objective case for those years being THE most creative in the entire history of popular music. And diverse? Try the Beatles, Led Zep, Donovan, the Strawberry Alarm Clock, Iron Butterfly, the Doors, the Guess Who, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas, the Stones, Howlin' Wolf, Jimi Hendrix, CCR, Simon and Garfunkel, Traffic, Peter Paul and Mary, I mean, I could just go on and on with the music of a single 10-15 year period. All of that was happening at once! I was born in '65, and I consider this gold mine of music to have been one of the greatest gifts of my life. When I got my first radio, in 1974, the oldies stations were still playing the music of the birth of rock and roll in the mid-50s. So that gave me the background for this incredible period that followed right afterwards. What a gift!

I had a bit part, about one minute of footage, in a movie starring James Coburn's wife Paula Murad back in 1999. I met her before the filming began, we spent about an hour hanging out and talked mostly about her husband. She was an amazing lady. I completely forgot to ask her about him being on the cover of this album. Also- when I was 18 and first started college I went out with a girl a few times who was a singer and was a music major. She knew some of Linda McCartney's cousins who lived about 45 minutes from my hometown. I had met them once before through my mother. Anyway, she took me to their huge ranch with a huge mansion and I was told beforehand that there was something NOT to mention, which was the fact that they were cousins of Linda McCartney. This girl's brother had been talking to me about the homemade peach brandy that he made. He sent her with a quart of the brandy in a ceramic stopper top bottle for me to try. I wound up drinking about half of it as she was burning down the highway in her Toyota MR2 listening to Tinderbox by Siouxsie And The Banshees with me in the passenger seat being a really quiet, uncool shmuck. By the time we got there I was utterly blasted. I remember walking through a huge room that had mounted heads of exotic animals that had been mounted after their hunting expeditions around the world and standing in a massive kitchen with a floor made from hand-painted Talavera tile. The highlight of my hour or so there was a massive black and white Great Dane who was glued to me and kept leaning against my leg. Long story short, I was so hammered I couldn't remember who they were so the idea of asking them about their cousin never crossed my mind.

This is a great place to tell my story! I was so excited when Band On The Run came out, I could not wait to buy it. But when I played it, I found out it had two 'Side 1's! So, I sold it to a friend of mine (I needed the money to purchase another copy). I was bummed to let it go, as it was probably somewhat collectible, but I wanted the entire album!
@JamesThompson-zk1ht20 күн бұрын
@lesHanalala Oh, wow! I'm SURE that was a collectible item! Did it really have 2 side 1's? Or was it just the LABEL that was the same on both sides? I can relate to your having sold it. I recall when I was a child that when it came to things that I'd bought (on a VERY tight family budget and allowance), I was a bit of a perfectionist. I would definitely not have cared that the item was collectible; what I would've cared much more about was its being DEFECTIVE. (And if I'd really grasped the idea of its being so collectible, I would also have realized that if I wanted to maintain its maximum value, I really wouldn't have been able to play it, or even handle it much. F that!) I hope you see this and respond. I'm very curious about the answer to my question, of the manner in which it had 2 Side 1's.

When this song came out, my class in school had some pet rabbits. One of the kids in class loved those rabbits. When this song played during our rec music periods he could hardly wait for the chance to scream out 'for the RABBITS on the run!' I can never hear this song now without thinking about that. It's a funny memory. :)

When Band on the Run came out, I had just started driving. Saved up money from logging and bought a used car from my Uncle. Used to crank up the Radio when any of Pauls songs came on. They were /are still magical.

Wow! Great story POR as usual. But does anyone else wonder what happened to the bag with Paul’s music?? The SEARCH for that bag would potentially be a great piece of investigative history!! 😮 Forget the Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail!!! Somebody - please!! Off you go!!!😂😂😂❤

Another awesome story - thanks for sharing! I have this little game I do in my head - the One Song - where I try to pick just 1 song which best exemplifies & personifies every band (some are easy to decide, while others can be tricky). And unsurprisingly "Band on the Run" is what I picked for Wings.
@Paulvanacker122 күн бұрын
This is well known, and is in several McCartney books. He spoke about it in interviews as well. I remember first hearing about it around 20 years ago. Great to hear it all again though. And what an album. Brilliant.

Exactly, and they did the same with "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey/Hands Across the Water", also, Meatloaf did that with his "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"! I love it when artists do that, having 3 songs in one, by bridging the main part with shorter, and diferent tempoed songs (that probably wouldn't have sold well on their own), to make a magnum opus type song.

*1971...* I was 7 years old and still remember hearing the Beatles on radio in the 60s and Paul McCartney and Wings in the 70s. *Band On The Run* is quite possibly my favorite song by Paul McCartney and Wings, but my favorite album is *Venus and Mars.* _And finally Adam...it was a joy to see your face light up as you spoke about your dad at the end. It is a privilege that you share these personal gems with us._

@@adotintheshark4848 McCartney 2 is very inconsistent. I am the only one of my Beatle loving family that enjoy listening to to often. But Tug of War. is Paul consistently strong. I can't say his best because the man has so much great music to choose from. Tug of War is his last great album. Very consistent, A great collection of songs, not a concept album. Just a great album he put out in the early 1980s I love Tug of War and Paul's voice and Playing are still at the top of his game. The song selection on the album is extraordinary. Just listen to Here Today one more time and tell me you don't care for it. I am not trying to call your post out or you personally. I just wanted to Defend 1982s Tug of War..... Pease
