Yes, and it’s basic A capella harmonizing, that I’ve heard Gospel singers do like it’s nothing. The parts aren’t difficult. If one likes the Eagles singing, then they like it, usually. I just don’t like Henley or Frye’s vocals. Their voice annoy me, and have something that even on songs with music I really love, just isn’t enough to like it. Hotel California is a beautifully written song, but I’ve just never liked listening to it. I only listen for the solo. Life in the Fast Lane, is one of three Eagles songs I liked first hearing it. Desperado makes me want to break whatever is playing it. I have special feelings of breaking things, for many Eagles’ songs. 😄

My trick was I went almost 40 years without listening to '80s music, now I'm reliving it all again and loving all of it, even the songs most people have heard to many times. P.S. I've always loved Zep's Rain Song.
@FFVison
@FFVison 23 күн бұрын
I love The Rain Song. I actually found some tabs and tried to learn to play it on guitar... in standard tuning. It's one of those ones where when you try it, you are doing weird acrobatics with your hands that end up making some bits have awkward transitions and rather than one note flowing into the next, there were parts where you just suddenly change your hand position causing notes to awkwardly deaden. With enough skill and dedication, you might make it somewhat passable, but it wouldn't be perfect and it would be many times harder than playing it right.

Back in the 80s and 90s, classic rock stations would play “deep cuts” of artists and bands. For example, “Sleeping With The Television On” by Billy Joel. You NEVER hear that song on classic rock radio anymore. They play the hit songs, but only if they are considered “rock”. Classic rock stations will never play The Monkees. They’ll never play any Beatles songs before 1966. Why? Because they’re more “pop”. Yet they also never play any Genesis songs from the Peter Gabriel era or Pink Floyd from the Syd Barrett era. Makes me wonder if we need a classic pop station. This is why I have satellite radio.
@badbob6689

Unfortunately radio stations are like this. Blinkered. The BBC thinks the only thing ever recorded by Steve Harley/Cockney Rebel was "Come Up and See Me", for instance'; everything else, great tracks like "Sebastian" or "Mr Soft" or "Judy Teen" are ignored. Even when Harley died, the only tribute song to be heard on BBC radio was "Come Up And See Me". You want to hear something by the Blue Öyster Cult on the BBC that isn't "Don't Fear The Reaper"? Dream on... forget "Godzilla" or "I Love The Night" or "The Pact" or the one I'd replace "Reaper" with on broadcast radio, "Golden Age of Leather" -or for sheer gonzo impact, "Dominance and Submission" or "ME262".

I saw an interview with Don Henley where he laid it out. It is a song about lost innocence. About going from Adolescence to adulthood and not being able to undo those responsibilities and go back to childhood. He wrote the lyrics on a dark desert highway after leaving the Whiskey, exceedingly drunk and on his way to Needles, CA to find some peyote. Passing the cacti and lonely desert motels, he quickly wrote the words. It has no other meaning than Once you take on the perks of being an adult, you can never go back to being innocent again. You can never go back to virginity.

Interesting. I had always subscribed to the mental institution hypothesis. “You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave,” fits that narrative so well, but I suppose it’s even more figurative than that. If Henley says it’s something else, I’ll have to go with that.

Nice mention of “Still They Ride”. Anyone who was in high school in the old days should remember cruisin’ main on the weekends, riding endlessly through the night to meet friends or to go to a party. It is so true as decades go by people move, and pass. The words “now, nobody knows his name” are very true in the story he tells. Poignant and sad with an orchestration that is so beautiful, it could almost be a funeral song.

In 1976 I was 14 and I bought a ticket and a bus ride to Toronto for my first ever concert. It was Emerson, Lake, and Palmer for their Works Vol 1 tour. The opening act was introduced as a young and up and coming band who were the “pride of the west”. It was Journey. The band came out and mentioned they had just replaced their lead singer, but we weren’t to worry because he was good. It was Steve Perry. They then launched into The Wheel In The Sky. I don’t know what the tour manager was thinking to book Journey to open for ELP, but it was a good time. I still have the ticket stub!

"It's Late" is 6½ minutes long, start out slow, get more upbeat, climaxes with Brian May's fast-paced guitar solo, winds down, and just as you thought the song is about to end, it climaxes once again with another fast-paced May solo, and then finally coming to an end.

Love this premise, and all your choices are absolutely solid. For the broad public, I would offer these as well... Maybe Not Really Rock: 1. Billy Joel - Piano Man -> Scenes from an Italian Restaurant (most over played song in the history of piano bars vs. masterpiece) 2. Elton John - (I'm a massive fan) Too many to list...but, Your Song / Candle in the Wind -> Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters / Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me. (You could do an overplayed 10 vs. lesser known/underrated 10 just for Elton!) 3. Jimmy Buffet r.i.p. Margaritaville -> A Pirate Looks at Forty Rock: 4. Bruce - Born in the USA -> Thunder Road 5. Rolling Stones - Satisfaction -> Sympathy for the Devil (again, this list is for the masses, not the fans of the artists). Other ideas...List bands where it is hard to argue which hit song(s) is more overplayed, or is currently their signature song?! Example: AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long / Back in Black / Thunderstruck or Sports Crowd Anthems: White Stripes - Seven Nation Army, Queen - We Will Rock You, Gerry and the Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone (Liverpool Football/Soccer), and for some strange reason...Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline (ubiquitous) Cheers!

Wow, 10 great songs in this video! When you were talking about Zeppelin, I thought the replacement song was going to be "All My Love." If you can consider it a ballad (it's more like a mid-tempo love song), I think it's HIGHLY underrated! The Bon Jovi replacement also surprised me. "Lay Your Hands On Me" is definitely underrated, because it never plays on the radio. I thought you might've chosen "Never Say Goodbye." That one IS a ballad, though, not a rocker. You could say it's also overplayed, especially for a song that wasn't released as a single. I actually heard it play at Walmart last night. Thanks for another great video, Professor!!! 🙂

I was honestly hoping to hear Rubicon as a replacement for Don't Stop Believin'. It's theme pairs so well with its more popular brother; striving, taking chances, taking action to make one's dreams a reality, and you rarely hear it played on the radio. On the other hand, Separate Ways brings that energy that makes you bounce in your seat and play air keyboards. There are a lot of songs that make you think "Nice." when it comes on the radio, but it's another thing entirely when you hear the opening notes and think "YESSSSSSSSS!" I may be slightly biased towards Frontiers. Teeny bit.

Nearly all radio stations use play lists these days. These play lists will be based on a bands most liked and well known songs, so type in Pink Floyd you will usually get Comfortably Numb, Deep Purple..... Smoke On The Water, Lynyrd Skynyrd ....Freebird, Queen ... Bohemian Rhapsody etc. The rock stations do vary it a bit, but generally it will still be the band's most popular and well known songs that get played. Lay Your Hands On Me gets played here in the UK almost as much as Living On A Prayer as does Dead or Alive. To be honest I've stopped listening to music on the radio, it was much better in the old days when the DJ had some input on what was played. That's why Bohemian Rhapsody was a hit in the first place, the Radio stations hated it but some of the DJs liked it so played it anyhow. Here in the UK Radio GaGa gets played to death as well by the way.

If that ain't the damn truth. Amen on the Judas Priest! Breaking the law is another overplayed one. From a working musician who's played in a few cover bands I wholeheartedly agree...people just DO NOT get tired of hearing hit songs but come on, you're not truly a fan unless you can name songs off albums that WEREN'T popular. For instance, name any songs on British Steel that aren't Breaking the law or Living after midnight...The hits are rarely the best songs on any record. They were just what drove the album's sales in those times. But it's just sad that people act like listening to an entire album is such a tough thing to do. It was designed to be digested as an entire piece of work. Not all albums are great as a whole, but there's plenty that are. Thanks for this comment, be nice to see more agreeing with us. 🤘🤘🍻

Here's my list of substitute songs. Eagles: "One of These Nights" Zeppelin: "All My Love" Bon Jovi: "Raise Your Hands" Journey: "Mother Father" Queen: "Hammer to Fall" The *One of Theae Nights* title track resonates for me as a proto-Disco tune, something that many people don't even know Eagles did, even if they know the song. "All My Love" is a combination of my adoration for synthesizers and the raw emotions Robert was grappling with after the death of his son. "Raise Your Hands" gets my nod for being the Bon Jovi tune licensed by Mel Brooks for my favorite film of his, Spaceballs. "Mother Father" came my way when my mother got me a copy of *Escape* - right when she and my father split up in 2003. "Hammer to Fall" hit me close to home as a prime example of how Brian May was the Queen member whose original material helped push them in the direction of the same melodic rock template as Journey during the 80s, and I consider that only a good thing.

My father (now 90) said he pictures the Muppets when he hears Bohemian Rhapsody, and thought they'd be so cool to see. 😊💜😎 Have the Muppets ever done that?does anyone know?

If you search "Muppets Bohemian Rhapsody" on KZbin it will come up. It's epic. Your Dad is going to love it.

Our classic rock station plays Seven Bridges Road quite a bit. The vocals make my hair stand up. A most excellent song.

When I made a personal mix tape in college, I had every intention of putting “Don’t Stop Believing” on the playlist. But when it was time to lay it down, I suddenly switched it out for “Still They Ride.” It became one of my favorites on the tape.

I worked Rock Radio for 15 years. If I never hear Freebird again it will be too soon.

Replace it with "Gimme Three Steps," or better yet, the criminally underplayed "Green Grass and High Tides" by the Outlaws.

When you mentioned “Hotel California,” I immediately thought of “Seven Bridges Road.” I love the harmony. As to Queen, I don’t think I could pick one other song, since they recorded so many really great songs, many of which were never singles.

Me too, but this channel has reminded me of all the music I used to listen to. I now find myself widening my options.

Man, I just have to give you a major thumbs up on your writing. I’m obviously a music lover being a fan of your channel. But as someone who had multiple little old ladies as high school English teachers who insisted we know how to read classic literature and be able to write persuasively and effectively I equally enjoy the way you write these episodes. Well done, my friend.

In the early 2000s I was a manager at a steakhouse in the Atlanta metro. We had live music every night. On Monday was Open Mic Night, where anyone with an instrument (or voice) could join the band. We had flyers printed for advertising, with one even saying "bring your zither..." One night a woman brought her zither, and the rest of the band broke into a magical, spell-binding, once-in-a-lifetime rendition of Seven Bridges Road. Complete with mesmerizing harmonies. It was one of those magical moments you knew could never be duplicated. No matter how many times you played it, or how hard you tried, it would never be the same. I wish I had a way to record it back then, but I was sanitizing the menus for the next day.
