Honestly half life 2 is what you'll want to have played before the new game coming out because it's not going to involve Gordon as much as you think. This sets the base story and then half life 2 will be an extrodinarily different game experience with an entire new race of bad guys and collapsed society. It would probably give you a better expectation for the one coming out, especially as half life 2 actually has alyx in it who is presumably the main character of the new one

your thoughts about how gordon might have started a bad first contact aren't entirely inaccurate. But he's not the first person the aliens have encountered, you find out more on that around 2/3rds of the way through the game. Also there's a quote from one of the later games something along the lines of "It wasn't that long ago that these aliens only knowledge of humanity was a crowbar coming at them down a dark hallway." So good job on your assumptions there.

I would say to play more Half-Life because the story is great, but the game play is a bit repetitive for a series. But yes please play Half-Life 2, and I would highly recommend making a series out of it if possible, or at the very least play it in it's entirety on you own time because the story, atmosphere, and game play is quite engaging throughout and graphically it holds up really well.

I'm not sure if scientists got any representation though. After this is half life 2 stuff starting with its prequel, half life Alyx which is yet to be released, then 2, then episode 1 and then 2. I don't recall any further content other than mods, lots and lots of mods. A jolly Wang core bumbles his way through some notable mods he is hilarious.

In Norway you also need to have a Masters Degree (which takes 5 years) before you can even apply for a PhD. That means: graduate High School at 18/19, plus 5 years in a masters degree + 4 years for the PhD (2 years of research and 2 years of work for the company paying for the research). So 27 is the absolutely earliest you could start a job as a doctor. On the other hand, Freeman could have been taking his PhD through Black Mesa (or FFI, which is the Norwegian equivalent). In which case he'd have been working there for 4 years already.
