I must say say these artworks for encounters make them seem a lot more immersive, in FTL I often found myself just skipping through encounter texts and just looking at the predicted outcome, but with this the story or at least world building could be very nice indeed

I find the art distractingly amateurish, but I like it because it's different, and it keeps the game from edging tooooooooooo close to FTL. That said, I did actually really love the moment early on when Jon attacked the giant mountain robot, and before the response text could be read, there was a picture of the robot firing huge lasers into the air.... that was rad.

I quite like all the descriptive text and variety of events - it makes the little worlds and crew feel rather alive and real. I've always liked watching FTL, but I've never tried playing it since it seemed like something I'd get bored of quickly... This one though, I might keep an eye on and try out sometime. ^_^

Coming back to this 5 months later (now I have actually played this game) I am pretty sure the devs have toned down the MegaMissiles. I got onto the fourth map with no real problems on my first playthrough and never had my entire ship catch fire like that. Also, losing that med bay was not a happy move. By the time Jon was boarded I think most of his crew were already on one or two hit points. Good game. Took most of the FTL stuff and made it better, although I feel the lack of the ticking clock of the rebel fleet chasing you across the map takes a bit out of it.

The fact that the ship can damage itself and use materials, without there actually being a consistent retrieval over time mechanic, seems like a really stupid design decision. I get they created it to keep players moving instead of shield camping like you could in FTL, but it's implemented so poorly. There's no gains from shield camping in this game anyways. If you're panicking and switching crew and modules around in the downtime after a conflict the ship could damage itself, and it would be at no fault of your own. It's just one of those "screw you, player" sort of things.

That sort of stuff is lame, it's an added 'feature' that adds nothing at all but frustration. If it was backed by a reason (even simply be immersive like say the hunger, thirst, sleep counter in New Vegas) then it's understandable, but otherwise seems like poor design.

I've bought and played the game myself now...that engine lighting itself on fire is one of the mechanics of that particular engine. Essentially it's a crap one and needs to be replaced ASAP with a more reliable engine. So not as random as it would seem from Jon's video. The chance for it to catch fire also seems to be pretty low - happened to me once in the 40-50 minutes or so it took me to find a replacement. Currently on sector 4 on my 2nd attempt. I'd say "getting out of the 1st sector is tough" is a bit overrated. It feels easier than FTL.

The level 1 enemy nukes should be removed in the next weeks balance update! :) And a practical tip: if you postpone scrapping modules that you don't need, you might be able to avoid having to dump excess resources.

i think it's an issue of not having engines dedicated to maneuvering, so you can't just turn, consequently trying to turn creates a chase and the enemy ends up remaining behind you

I was actually wondering how close a game can get to another before there's an issue. I would assume if assets or game engine, etc. aren't reused and there is sufficient change then it's probably okay. There was a guy that would redo games with the same assets and game engine, change it up a bit and slap different name (but similar) and sell it as his own, but it was literally the same game with just stuff shuffled around. He'd change company name every time so it was kind if hard for people to catch him but he was definitely in trouble. I forget his name but he just fell off the face of the map and was never heard from again as far as I know.

Just go to your local supermarket and take a look at any given product and it's competitors. You might realise that most of these products are almost identical to their competition. Same for games, which is why we use the term "genre". It's not illegal to copy someones idea but it is illegal to infringe on someones intellectual property (eg: the exact same code or the use of the same artwork without paying for either of them). You can't copyright a vague idea like a genre unless you make it so specific that it can only applied to carbon copies, which this game is clearly not.
