i think this is my favourite Mao's performance EVER. She can carry the whimsical tune so well, and she looks happy and most importantly, she actually managed to get the audience to engage with the performance - it's all great

There is pure joy and freedom on her face that other skaters in this competition do not have. Her pursuit of physical limits and aesthetism really helps woman figure skating improve into a new era.
Don't know anything about figure skating, but her skating is absolutely beautiful!

A beautiful clean program, with 3 triple Axel's, one in a combination. How the hell did she not win the world title?.
@dalubhasar6 ай бұрын
I think she only did one. The other 2 are double axels

I really think her skills are better now but she had no rivals at this moment. I still think she is one of the best figure skater and hope she gets the best this year. BUT I really hope is to see her smile like this video.
I REALLY can't help thinking that if Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen or Kimmie Miesner had skated this program Dick Button and Peggy Flemming would have been falling over themselves saying how wonderful it was. And no, she didn't two foot the triple axel. Listen to the British Eurosport commentators to hear unbiased commentary of this!

I think this free skate is a hundred times better than miki ando's free skate, but well she still won the worldchampionships the year after in 2008 and even won it this year 2010, and I think there are going to be more world championships that she is going to win in the near future. . but congratualation for a briliant performance two our two times world champ... she really deserves a standing ovation..

During this time Mao-chan was above Yuna Kim. To this day, Mao-chan is considered one of the greatest figure skater based on three qualities:1. Triple Axel Jumps. It's a very difficult jump for female skaters; hence only few can pull it off. Mao-chan is probably the only female skater out there who can do it so effortlessly. 2. Flexibility. She can do the donut spin, and very few skaters can do this due to the extreme flexibility required.3. Her step sequence. She will forever be one of my idols. I'll probably stop watching figure-skating once our dear Mao-chan retires.

two foot landing :-)

Yea. Like Yuna has never two-footed her jumps. You are quite delusional. All skaters make mistakes.

so what, she had deduction for two foot.

Mao should have won this competition because of the ridiculously low value of the triple axel alone which was 1 point less than it is today and she allegedly "lost" by only half a point. Secondly, Mao's supposed "two footed" landing was a mere touch of the ice that few people even saw in real time and it received more than -1 GOE for what looks like a gorgeous jump. A true two footed landing is when the flow of the skater or skate is interrupted and this has even been a rule before in the ISU. The reason Mao sometimes touches slightly with her free foot foot is because she wraps her feet and legs very tightly and points her toes to give her jumps a more aesthetic and symmetrical appearance instead of unsightly bending and hunching on landing which is far more distracting than a barely visible touch but in ISU scoring the overall aesthetics of jumps are often meaningless. However, there were more reasons why Mao should have won. Miki skated well, but she had a big hook and shaky landing leg and skate on the landing of her 3lutz / 3 loop backend that was a ur and she bent over very far to hold onto the landing. Yet, she received an excellent +1.14 GOE and full base value on the combo . Urs back in 2007 received full downgrades and -GOE so the proper call would have reduced her score by more than 5 points. If the value of urs were what it is today, Mao would have also won, because Mao's 2A / 3T received a full downgrade instead of just a ur call. Then, there is the unjust scoring of the spiral sequence. Miki Ando wobbled quite noticeably twice during her spiral sequence and Mao maintained stable positions which were far more more flexible and elegant yet they received practically identical scores within a 1/10 of a point, which is ridiculous . For all these reasons, I believe Mao is the clear winner of the competition.

Yes, Mao looked perfect at this time. She looked better than when she was tangled by her change of weight and the undesirable effect of her Russian Coach. Her flying jumps were possible because of her junior-like weight. She must have thought herself a genius with the Triple-Axel, but without adequate effort for that... I really want to see her better program even these days, but it seems impossible. What if she could change her attitude to jumps, so she changed her jump edge and skills not by lightness but by the power of skating. I'm sad...

Definitely, even in Torino when Sasha Cohen fell twice, Dick was like "I'll take the falls for the beautiful choreography". They are so biased towards their own, they need some kind of commentary etiquette. BBC Commentators are great.

Two footed? I don't think so! It looked perfect to me! However, the Lutz was wrong edged, as it uses to be, and the commentators didn't say a thing.

Jan Szulc, I see a TOUCH DOWN which is completely different than a two footed landing. Her left toe pick touches the ice ACCIDENTLY, and not PURPOSELY. That's a touch down.
@mikef44907 жыл бұрын
Still technically a two-foot landing, since two feet touched the ice
@johnjackson37357 жыл бұрын
I agree Mao's triple axel was not a true two foot landing because the flow of the skate did not stop and it was not visible by most people in real time, but even with the deflated scoring of the triple axel Mao should have won. First, the triple axel here was too undervalued at only 7.5 points. If it were what it is now, 8.5 points, Mao would have won. Miki skated well overall. But in the LP, she had a ur on her backend triple lutz / triple loop wth a wobble and hook on the landing and she bent over quite a bit to hold on. Yet, the combination received +1.1 GOE and full base value. The proper ur call which were all downgrades at that time I believe would have given Mao the victory by at least 4 points, and even without the ur / downgrade call Mao still should have won, since the GOE should have been a lot lower on Miki's combo. Third, Miki Ando lost her balance and wobbled twice during her spiral sequence with positions that were less flexible than Mao's who did not lose her balance and had superior positions, yet they received almost exactly the same score, so Mao's score was also relatively deflated in the spiral sequence. Fourth, Mao received a full downgrade for her ur on the double axel / triple toe because I believe there were no ur calls at the time, while today this would have been only a ur and again Mao would have won. I am not sure about the downgrade / ur ruling but Mao lost like half the base value of her 2A / 3 T not 30 percent as it is today with a ur. The thing with COP is the scores are released and then you have to wait for the protocols and then people rarely go over the jumps to see if the jump calls are consistent between competitors because many assume ur and edge calls are objective, which they are often aren't. Plus, the scoring is so complicated that it requires a lot of due diligence to catch the mistakes especially on tech calls, which in my opinion has made figure skating too focused on things that are barely and often invisible in real time and to me takes away from the overall beauty of a performance. besides calls being made that often favor one skater over another.

@BmcC10211 жыл бұрын
They DID love it. Dick was choked up with tears at the end and Peggy had NOTHING but wonderful things to say. Sorry, but pointing out that the 3 axel "...might have been a little two-footed, but it was beautiful, good height... very nice, very gutsy" does not make Peggy biased. Again, did you actually listen? Your ragging on them is the only thing that is biased. The proof is in the commentary.
