It was cool to see how Jinshi's concern made him even drop his mask as a super seductive man for a few moments. And Mao Mao in another episode proving that she is one if not the best protagonist of 2023.

The hairpins can mean a couple things based on Chinese history! (I am Chinese 😂) in these contexts they show statues by wearing them as well as a promise. Traditionally they were used to propose marriage and then you’d return it to your spouse at the ceremony. In this context it’s seen as a sign of rank and respect as well as a favor. In the case of jinshi’s hairpin…. We’ll. Take it what you may ❤

And even without knowing the details, Lihaku giving out so many of them makes it clear that his aren’t nearly as significant.

To quote Maomao from a fanfic (not verbatim): "These pins are way too hard than they should be"😄

@@IZEASGT Luhaku is a low level official, so it would, in a sense, a way for him to gain favor. He offers the hairpins to other lower level ladies in the rear palace. This gains him favor as he is able to offer them services beyond what they have authority for. Court politics.

Mao Mao remains one of the most lovable MCs! She's just too damn funny and is as smart as can be. And Jinshi was actually really sincere this ep. It's a nice change! Thanks for another Apothecary Diaries reaction

What's often forgotten about this series is how low status Maomao and the courtesans are in high society. It's why Maomao is very cautious and thoughtful with her words, and even though she's right, anyone above doesn't necessarily have to believe her. Is it messed up? Yes, but it is the societal framework Maomao and people like her have to deal with.

Was reading something similar about how modern readers don't get the stakes in jane austen novels cause they don't understand what's it like to live in a hierarchical society with little social mobility.
@myne56896 ай бұрын
Lack of education is a huge problem and is causing a decline in good writing across media. People don't understand what they're watching so they don't understand the stakes leading to shows that have no nuance/everything explained to them.

Just a recap for this ep, the one supposed to get the poison is Lady Lishu (young mother in-law) but her ladies-in-waiting doesn't like Lishu for being picky eater so they/she bullied Lishu by swapping the food with Gyokuyo's food (thus, the poison ended up as Gyokuyo's). Others including Gyokuyo's food have food with fish but Lishu's food has none of that bcs she can't eat it. The lady-in-waiting wanted to see Lishu got forced to eat fish....bullying her (thus the smirk). If the food taster found the food is fine and the food reached Lishu, Lishu had to eat it, in front of emperor she had to eat it. Lishu's lady-in waiting did not know that Lishu is not simply picky eater but she is allergic to fish or the term that time "food she can't eat". The lady-in-waiting did not know allergic can be that severe. If she knew, she wouldn't try because if her lady got sick or died, she as the food/poison taster would get punished too. That's why she's shocked to hear allergic can be that severe and that feeding Lishu knowing she's allergic is the same as poisoning her (but she didn't know so she did not mean to poison Lishu and she's not the one who put poison because she will taste that food before going to Lishu. She wanted to bully her for being picky eater). She only swapped the food for the fish, not the poison. However, lucky for her, swapping the food saves her life. As food/poison tester for Lishu, if she did not swap the food, she's the one who has to taste the poison. By swapping food, the poison ended up with Mao Mao who's more resistance to it.... who loves tasting the poison and Mao Mao is grateful for that 😂 up to this episode, who gave the poison is still unknown and the reason why the person gave poison to Lishu is unknown. That's the mystery 🙊😮 Even small details in this anime can be part of hints for upcoming stories.

it history bruh, normal stuff for emperor and people with power back then, marriage is also use for political stuff
@IZEASGT8 ай бұрын
@@enjoyereheheh Maomao didn’t think it was normal. Sure, there were people who could get away with making a girl give birth at [REDACTED] years old like the last emperor did. But there were always people who would look at it while it was happening and say “dude, that is MESSED UP”. Probably any midwife at the time would’ve known that being able to conceive at that age does NOT mean being able to give birth at all safely.
@shadowturtle14258 ай бұрын
@@enjoyereheheh In the manga/light novel it was mentioned the prev emperor was a freak - it's not correlated to mixed morals in history, since biologically it makes no sense to have a concubine that young since it's more likely they will die in the process of childbirth
@gellythedreamer23208 ай бұрын
@@enjoyereheheh u’re right: generally pedophilia wasn’t judged back then if it happened. But I’m not sure about Ancient China’s perspective about that regard either. Anyway, the show decided to make it look as if the characters have the current feeling that it wasn’t okay. Not in a super obvious way that it takes away the truthfulness in the story, but enough to remark they rejected extremes. Because it’s not as if the previous emperor liked young women, he literally liked children under 10 🙃
@IZEASGT8 ай бұрын
@@gellythedreamer2320 Yeah, and the point about “it’s not as if the previous emperor liked young women”reminds me - Lihua and Gyokuyou are young enough that in a modern context, the age gap with the emperor would be deeply questionable. _That’s_ an example of something everyone sees as normal, including Maomao. So far, the anime’s abridgments have omitted the points where their exact ages are given, so I hesitate to give the numbers, but while they’re both older than Maomao, they’re not nearly as old as Ah-Duo.

That poor baby had to eat fish even though she has a food allergy. Those are serious and couldn't have been appreciated in that time and place. But I'm a bit confused about what the scheme was in this episode. Lishu's tester allowed her to have fish and had that evil grin, but then Maomao's version had the jellyfish. But then it was a completely different dish that poisoned Maomao. Am I not supposed to know what happened there yet? Cause it almost seems like at least 2 concubines are being targeted. But we didn't see whether anyone else's food was compromised.
