I love this episode seeing Jinshi react that way of losing Maomao for even just a short while. And his solemn state when she approached him as a courtesan's assistant lol.

Slavery was abolished during the current emperor's reign, but in the timeline of the series you can sell your "family" members to the palace as a worker. If you recall Maomao was kidnapped in episode 1 and was sold to the rear palace. The kidnapper have some sort of connections so they were able to sell maomao as part of their "family".the kidnappers also has some previous dealings with Fengming's family

If I remember correctly, the kidnappers sold her to a merchant related to Fengming's family, who then sold her as an unwanted daughter to the rear palace.

@wer-hat-es-gedacht When Jinshi is talking about the list of associates to Fengming's family, he says, "The family that the apothecary was kidnapped and sold off to was one such family. " The kidnappers essentially sold her off to a middleman who acted as her "family."

Maomao might be one of the few sassiest yet likeable characters I have seen since I started watching anime. Every encounter with Jinshi is hilarious, especially the last one in the final episode! Also, it would be very nice if you react to its openings as well, these two openings (Hana ni Natte by Ryoukuoshoku Sakai and Ambivalence by uru) are great. While, the first one is quite catchy and sets up the story well, the second one (this one is actually my favourite one) delves into the story more deeply, foreshadowing some key moments that will occur in the future episodes. It is also my favourite opening because, after watching the last 7-8 episodes, some sequence of this opening hits more deeply than usual.

I think the difference between her and a bratty or tsundere character is that she can be kind despite her blunt nature - her sass isn’t a gimmick to justify rudeness, she have an actual personality.

I interpret Mao Mao as an aromantic person or maybe demisexual, but definetely ace. It's not that she can't develop feelings for Jinshi or feel attracted to him at all, but it doesn't seem to occur to her in the same way it happens to other people

This!!! Especially as a light novel reader. The light novels really show how Maomao thinks of and processes her feelings toward others, as well as how her upbringing affected her emotions and thoughts about the concept of love.

4:00 Waiting for this moment and the mushroom moment. So by "buying" Maomao does that make her Jinshi's "property"? How's that going to play out with their dynamic?

In a way he does. He bought out her contract, so technically she now works for him. Maomao had a contract with the brothel to pay off her debt to them, she would work there for them for X amount of time. Jinshi basically bought that contract out so now instead of working for the brothel for X amount of time, she now works for Jinshi for X amount of time. Slavery has been abolished so he doesn't own her physically, but by owning her work contract he can decide what sort of work she does for him. However once that contract is up she is free to leave and do as she likes. Also she is still getting paid for what she does. Usually when someone is buying out a courtesan's contract it's to marry them, or to make them a mistress or something in their household. A lower level girl like where Maomao is would be bought out more likely as a servant though if a customer took a liking to her. Given the value of a courtesan's attendant in general, Jinshi likely heavily overpaid for Maomao, but to him I'm sure it was worth it. Also, and I may be wrong about this, but the person who's contract is being bought out has to also agree to the buyout, which is probably why Jinshi brought the cordyceps, to make sure Maomao agreed to come in exchange for it.

@@caliithildae8500as for why Maomao was in debt with the brothel, because she recommended Lihaku to Pairin before. One night with Pairin can cost so much, but Lihaku literally stay for 3 nights, so the silver Maomao bring to Madame wasnt nearly enough.

Yea slavery is abolished but he essentially buys out her contractual term. Same way a company could buy your emplyment term today if you have one.
