To help clear up the confusion at the end of this episode: Lishu's ladies in waiting aren't very nice to her, and claim she's picky and unreasonable. Her food taster tried to make her eat a dish she'd complained about in the past, not understanding the extent of the danger it posed for concubine Lishu. In order to do this and teach her mistress a lesson about being picky in redarding to fish, she switched the courses intended for concubines Lishu and Gyoukuyou. However, the soup that had initially been prepared for Lishu had been tampered with and was served to Maomao, who identified it as poison. The poisoner could have been Lishu's taster but Maomao doesn't believe that to be the case at this time, possibly due to Lishu's taster's surprised reaction when Maomao declared she'd been poisoned.

100% This is probably the one episode where I think the creators maybe left a little too many details to interpretation. Most of their audience seems to have missed a lot of the things they thought people would just infer. Also, props for taking the time to explain this in a civil, informative manner instead of the arrogant, dismissive tone I've seen so many other commenters adopt.

Spelling out third of an episode before they react to it IS spoiler, no matter how clever you think you are piecing everything together from literal 1 liners (and 95% of you didn't do that, you just saw the next episode). By the way following your logic MANY other thing could be spoiled based on this episode, like the hair pins and who is who, since "all those can be interpreted".... but i bet you would consider that spoiler, right? ... at least i hope so ...

Lishu's dishes have no fish, but Gyokuyo's fish have it, so, the taster switch both to make a uncomfortable situatio for Lishu, she tough that she was only been picky about it, but doing that she save her and heeself because Lishu's dishes was poisoned and she didn't know about that.

The simplest parallel for the hairpin given to Maomao is like labeling a drink or food in a public fridge with your name, telling "Don't touch it, it's mine"

The hairpins and the like given to maomao can be interpreted by if you get one from a distinguished person, they are marking you as they have trust in you(in cases of the ornaments given by jinshi, lihua and gyokoyou) and each ornament has somewhat of a "grade" in which higher rank persons have a specific color of ornament.

Hairpins in China are meant as love tokens and are closely related to the idea or marriage. A woman may give a hairpin to a man she likes, which is then returned if the relationship sours (this is pretty bad since it impacts the honour of the lady) and the hairpin is then returned after the wedding. However, in the contest of the show, a man OFFERING a hairpin is an offer of a romantic relationship. The woman may accept or refuse it. Accepting also means accepting the romantic advance. With these contexts in mind, the hairpins are both a form of romantic declaration, filial claim as well as PROTECTION (the savvy courtier will know exactly who gave the hairpin based one the ornamentation, jewels and metals used.)

This is the first episode where you as the viewer has to engage your braincells to follow and it _really_ gets going mystery-wise. I hope your comment section is kind and shuts up to let you have the full experience. Your confusion about the swap is understandable though and it _will_ be explained a bit better and with more context later so COMMENTS SECTION BE NICE!

Seriously, especially with this anime for some reason, people seem to be eager to be really insulting... and it gets even worse later on when a certain character is introduced.

It sadly is a byproduct of many mystery shows. :( But i also wanna caution the overly excited ones who want to speak cryptically of things to come. People think they are slick. People are WRONG. I have seen so many creators getting too much info too early. It is sad even though the commentors mean well. I always advise to simply just talk about stuff that already happened and nothing else.

Empress & Empress Dowager are two different things...Empress for the emperor official wife and Empress Dowager for the emperor's mother. The facts Lihua grateful to maomao are huge developement....And even Ah Duo's giving advice to Lishu's lady waiting....I meant warning them are a good thing.

Jinshi is looking for someone with burned arms because of that incident about the guy with the rash on his hands and the wooden plates which emit colored flames... He is assuming, these plates were used for coded messaging from inside the palace and someone may have been burned using them...

Previous episode someone's hand got burned accidentally burning wood that produced some colors. So, they're on the search of other servant with burn in the hand to know who was intentionally making colored fire. (What's not told explicitly to us is that there may be a spy signalling something to others using this method)

if you misunderstood, the food tester hated the young concubine so she served her food which she hated (the tester didnt know that it was allergy), but the tester didnt know that it would kill her lady hence her scared reaction that due to her silly prank, she would have killed her lady which she didnt know or wanted at all, hence the scared expression.

She's scared because killing a concubine would be punishable by death. They don't know at any point a concubine could be carrying the heir to the throne so in those days they made it a blanket rule that killing a concubine would be the same as killing the Emperor. Maomao not accusing her of being the one to switch dishes to bully her saved her life along with her narrowly missing being poisoned herself. She escaped death twice in one day.

You've caught that the young consorts servants don't like her. Her food taster must have known that her lady, Lishu, dislikes eating mackerel - her smirk during dinner gives that away. That food taster might or might not be the one responsible for swapping the dishes. Maomao doesn't see it as her place or responsibility to elaborate on that. What she does explain painfully detailed to the food taster is that allowing Lishu to eat mackerel is tantamount to poisoning her - AND that Lishu was in fact the actual target of poisoning here. Which puts the life of Lishu's food taster at risk twice, along with her Lady. The hairpins/jewels thing was pretty well explained in the comments last episode, but just to reiterate.. they are symbols of appreciation, authority, favor, protection, ownership all wrapped into one. The exact meaning and interpretation can vary on the giver, the receiver and the situation. It's mostly a positive thing, but as mentioned in this episode it can als be used to make a person - like Maomao - the linchpin of a conflict between competing interested parties. The one who gives the hairpin is always more powerful than the receiver, so deciding what to do with the gift carries its own risks and implications.

One of the aspects of this anime I really enjoy is how underdeveloped this era was. People didn't know what could and couldn't posion. Allergies and mental ilnesses back then were treated as simple preferences and behaviours.

The hairpins just like flowers can have several meanings depending on the difference in rank and past interactions. Maomao's freckles are like Clark Kents glasses nobody recognizes her with out them.

The poisoned dish that maomao tasted was for the little concubine... But the little concubine's poison taster knew that she doesn't like fish so to bully her master she exchanged the poisoned dish with fish and indirectly saved the little concubine's life but if her allergy was more severe than she could've also died becouse of fish

That family tree thing, it just from old era. In that Era, Morally normal. (They're married at young age, force (to rich guy) or not, it really happened...) But, in this Era, Morally wrong. That's why it feels creepy & crazy Anyway, I like when Maomao want eat the rest of poison soup, lol

I don't think the taster was trying to poison her, just swapped the trays to force her to eat the fish because she thought she was too picky.

Something that doesn't really get clarified in the anime: Maomao was instructed to place all her gifted hair pins in the belt to not offend her mistress, nor any of the individuals who gifted the pins by showing favour of one over the others. It seems like she still doesn't understand any of that and just follows the advice without giving it much more thought.

Kudos to you guys about Empress Dowager, most reactors didn't get it right. Yes, that's the Emperor's mother and she gave birth to him at the age of *censored*. The baby she was holding I think it's princess Lingli, concubine Gyakuyou's daughter. So yeah, it's like grandma holding her granddaughter. She is the most powerful female in the land at this moment (since she's the Emperor's mother), until the Emperor can actually get himself an Empress consort a.k.a. an official wife.

There was a previous commentor that was a bit WRONG about the hairpins, so here is what I know as Chinese and a consumer of Chinese historical drama: Hairpins in China are meant as love tokens and are closely related to the idea or marriage. A woman may give a hairpin to a man she likes, which is then returned if the relationship sours (this is pretty bad since it impacts the honour of the lady) or returned after the wedding. However, in the context of being in the Imperial Palace during the Tang Dynasty which Apothecary Diaries is loosely based on, a MAN OFFERING a hairpin to a WOMAN is an offer of a romantic relationship. The woman may accept or refuse it. Accepting also means accepting the romantic advance. With these contexts in mind, hairpins and ornaments are both a form of romantic declaration (the young official/Jinshi), filial affection (Lihua/Gokuyou) as well as PROTECTION (Gyokuyou/Jinshi) (the savvy courtier will know exactly who gave the hairpin based on the ornamentation, jewels and metals used.) Notice that Gokyuyou gave something to each of her ladies, and Jinshi gave only one that we know of, while the young official was giving out tons probably in the hopes of getting some action or forming a beneficial relationship. His pins are the cheapest (they looked like bare wood or wood/resin), another indication of both his standing and his intent (his affection is cheap and not worth much, and that he's poor and not high up in the ranks.)

We should remember that 100 years ago (for Mankind a short time) it didn't matter how young the person was, the body is capable of it when it's ready. Away from morality. Technical progress does not always mean human/moral progress as we witness today. The thing is, people who lived thousands of years ago cared more about the people around them than they do today. This is not my personal opinion. But awesome how Prez directly consider about Lishuas Fish dish, that she could be allergic :D The Problem about soups, even a emetic can only help if its used after few seconds because soups are like water and they surpass the stomach without being break up.

About "Concubine at 9 years old" - being a concubine does not mean that you necessarily have to do the deed. It would be very much possible that she's been under protection from a danger outside - despite the palace being grounds for a lot of intrigues. Or, which somewhat also falls into that category, she lost her family, being the daughter of a exceptional servant to the emperor or the family of the emperor. Throwing this just out there for the folks gasping about "Concubine at 9" ^^

The food taster was not trying to poison Lishu. She was instead trying to bully her as she thought Lishu was being needlessly picky in her eating habits, not realizing she had a potentially serious allergy. She just inadvertently saved probably herself and Lishu from the poison by switching out the meal. Damn, so tempting to say more but spoilers...

Previous Emperor was a pervert into little girls in fact the current Emperor is the son of cuurent Empress Dowager at 10yrs old eeewwwww. The previous Emperor had another son but was much younger and claims to be sickly. The previous Emperor had the 9 yr old Lishu as a concubine aka wife-like, but died before changing cnsumating his marriage eeewwww Upon his death, Lishu became a widow and was returned to her family. Ah-Duo was the Prince’s consort for many years and both of them knew the little girl Lishu. I suspect Lishu’s family did not treat well and when the current Emperor returned Lishu to the Rear Palace she was accompanied by her current Ladies in Waiting who reflect her families low regard for Lishu. I suspect Ah-Duo encouraged Lishu’s return to the Rear Pslace even if the current Emperor had no sexual interest in little girls His motives might have been sympathy for Lishu as well as avoiding gaining another highly politically connected consort.
