The kidnappers basically stole her, and sold her to the rear palace, while posing as her guardians/parents. So shes now stuck contracted with the palace as a worker, and the kidnappers get the salary she makes, being the registered "family".

Cause they do think their concubine should be at top and always provide high quality care and what they think what's best for Lihua but in the end ignore other things especially as they will later now, like the simple flower on the window, obviously they would notice the flower instead of the note and be like "someone dare to give this flower to my lady"

Words for your dictionary Mao means cat and Xiao means little. Maomao's curiosity and cat ears makes sense now and her friend with the gossip is Xiaolan meaning Little Lan. They are using the word Courtesan for the brothel workers and Concubine for the Emperor's women.

The "Kidnappers" are basically an Aggressive Employment Agency that procure laborers and get them contracted into service, NOT with a 1-time fee, but with an ONGOING COMMISSION cut off the top of an employee's wages for the duration of the Contracted term (or life, whichever ends first). Concubines are all "not yet wives" on hand for Royal Lineage and Political Leverage purposes. The Courtesans of the Pleasure district Maomao used to operate with were the classic "All Purpose Entertainers, Artists, Idols" with the FULL SPECTRUM of services to entertain customers, up to but not necessarily always including the seggs trade. Maomao is initially Shanghai'd as a Rear Palace servant girl. Jinshi position is as "Manager of the Rear Palace", herding cats.... (or kittys) 😏

My friend said Maomao basically translates to cat cat. So that's why she gets the cat ears in her chibi form.

Absolutely agreed on Maomao. Apothecary Diaries ran concurrently with Frieren in back-to-back seasons, and while I still consider Frieren a better series overall, Maomao I would consider to be a better character than anyone in Frieren - and I liked most of the characters in Frieren. Not to mention Maomao is voiced by Aoi Yuuki, probably my all time favorite VA.

This is a Japanese anime. But it takes place in the Forbidden City in Beijing China. The Qing dynasty was the last dynasty to occupy the Forbidden City. It fell in 1912. So this wasn't necessarily so long ago.

@DireConsenquences I'm pretty sure they show that it's huge. Regardless it has an emperor and Eunuchs and all the rest. Where else could it be? Everyone in the show has Chinese names. It's clearly Beijing.

apparently "Lihua" is pronounced like "Lifa" but that goes beyond my expertise also: Lady Gyokuyou is voiced by Anya Forger/Frieren´s VA

I have only learnt Chinese's pronunciation through listening to various media so not an expert but I'm pretty sure Hua is pronounced like Juan but without the 'n' at the end

I agree. Both are 10/10 anime but I loved Apothecary Diaries way more than Frieren especially after reading the light novels!
