Show is a condensed version of aspects of China from 2nd century to 17th century, so it has aspects of almost everything. Chinese slavery is kind of different from what's known in America, it's more close to what indentured servitude is, so Jinshi does own her now, legally, unless she somehow can earn enough to pay him off.

Having read all available Light Novels over the break, I can confidently say you’re in for a treat. The Court Ladies’ Exam covers topics like history and geography. Maomao couldn’t care less about those things, hence her failing grade. If I remember correctly, the prologue with Jinshi and the Emperor is indeed a flashback to when Jinshi agreed to manage the Rear Palace. It isn’t made clear here but the Emperor’s words are intended to be read as him giving Jinshi express permission to bed the middle and lower consorts that he has yet to touch. Jinshi never takes him up on that offer.

Makes sense. Emperor is already 35 years old and So far no surviving male a heir. Even if Jin Shi might be his son, he cant be admitted as one. So to use him as “breeding stalion” to help his father/brother to a male heir is totally understandable.

I would like to give Jinshi more credit because my dude didn't take advantage of the fact the he bought Maomao and even bribed her just so he could keep her for himself. He gave her a wayout of a courtesan's life because he knows it's an uncomfortable job for her. And instead upon entering the outer court, Jinshi had already planned and hoped to make Maomao a court-lady and not work as a maid (HIS maid). A court-lady is a position higher than being a lady-in-waiting as explained in the episode. Apparently, Jinshi was really looking forward to this. Though unfortunately, Maomao failed lol. Too bad she's not as enthusiastic in anything other than medicine/poison-related topics. So now Jinshi has no choice but to make her a maid......again. His personal attendant, probably so she doesn't get picked on by other ladies?? Maybe.

Oh my, Lihaku is so well build ❤. 7:35 : it looks like « Datura Stramonium », a very invasive and toxic plant. (Saw some in the fields during my pilgrimage. Took a picture, identified it with an application and when I read the description, I was very glad I didn’t touch it). It would make sense to use that crazy dangerous plant as an allegory of a scheming court Lady or Courtesan. Poor Jinshi. He is so gorgeous that the girls go all yandere for him.

#7:40 Not really a spoiler, we already known that Ah-Dou is being replaced. So there will definitely be a new "Pure Consort" A little context regarding the imperial harem (roughly, things changes almost every dynasty, and the emperor may have enough sway in the courts to make minor changes (eg add a consort) , but they are usually these numbers, 1 Empress, 4 Consorts, 9 Imperial Concubines, and unspecified number of concubines) The highest lady of the harem is the empress (皇后) , there is always at most one empress, and she is usually the mother of the crown prince. The crown prince would be the designated heir of the emperor, and may not necessarily be the oldest son of the emperor. When we hear stories of empress being deposed, that's when the lady loses her title, (sometime it is also accompanied by a bottle of poisoned wine). Note that the empress might be replaced without choosing a new crown prince, and the empress is supposedly usually (but not always) promoted from the consorts. The next ladies in the harem are the 3+ Madames 夫人 /Consorts 妃 fēi,. each of the ladies would be given one of these titles, depending on what the court says the title of the consorts should be. (the first 3 are the usual ones before the Tang dynasty, and during the Tang Dynasty it expanded the harem with the worthy/able consort), other titles includes, (even though there are many titles, there are usually never more than 4 consorts, the only exception I've found was when Emperor Renzong of Song created the Imperial Consort for ) Noble Consort (貴妃; guì fēi) Pure Consort (淑妃; shū fēi) Virtuous Consort (德妃; dé fēi) Worthy Consort (賢妃; xián fēi) Consort of Conferred Kindness (惠妃; huì fēi) Magnificent Consort (麗妃; lì fēi) Splendid Consort (華妃; huá fēi) Imperial Consort (宸妃; chén fēi) Now the consort's main role is to provide an heir, and since Ah Dou is 35, and infertile, not even the emperor could keep her as the Pure Consort. So she being replaced by someone new is expected. The next rank are the 9? imperial concubines (嬪; pín), their titles can be quite flowery such as, Lady of Conducive Wellness (順儀; shùn yí) Lady of Supportive Wellness (順容; shùn róng) Lady of Splendid Wellness (順華; shùn huá) Lady of Cultivated Deportment (修儀; xiū yí) Lady of Cultivated Countenance (修容; xiū róng) Lady of Cultivated Splendidness (修華; xiū huá) Lady of Complete Deportment (充儀; chōng yī) Lady of Complete Countenance (充容; chōng róng) Lady of Complete Splendidness (充華; chōng huá) These are who I assume are the middle concubines in the Apothecary Diaries. Then there are the concubines; because the system is even less consistent, I am not going to list them. There is one thing to note, a concubine's pregnancy is not necessarily a happy occasion for the people involved. If the emperor acknowledges the child to be his, the concubine now makes an enemy of the consorts. Sometimes, a childless consort would adopt the child of the concubine with the hopes of securing their position as consort and potentially as empress and that's probably one of the better outcome for the concubine (See the story of Empress Wu Ze Tian). If the emperor refuse to acknowledge the child, the concubine would be expelled from the imperial harem, and if the emperor is "kind" enough, some poor sod would be made to be the father, and she would have someone to care for her. Otherwise she would pretty much have to care for herself alone. (This may be a plot point in the future: Minor spoilers)

My assumption is pretty simple: Jinshi has power over the Inner Court as their manager, so he could hire somebody for any position in there... except Maomao was fired from the Inner Court, so he can't. And in the Outer Court, he can only hire people for his own personal retinue of servants and workers (and he has no reason for an apothecary of his own.) He *might* be aiming to let Maomao work her way up to a similar position within the Outer Court, but she'd need to prove herself in other positions first, and being a Court Lady would be the only way she could get her face and name out there to get it - otherwise, she'd just be stuck inside his personal mansion grounds.

For the first scene, Jinshi at least knows he's the emperor's brother, the whole conversation is just him explaining in a vague way why he ended up managing the rear palace in the first place. You see, the emperor has not son yet, that makes his only sibling de-facto next in line. They haven't made it official, since the title was still "the emperor's brother", not "crown prince". How does one get out of this situation? Well make sure that the emperor gets a son then. Since Jinshi commented on how he is at best above average in everything except for looks, the only way that he could do to gets out of being next in line is use his good looks to manage the emperor's harem as good as possible.

Don't forget Maomao's theory that Jinshi was actually Ah Duo and the current Emperor's son, who may have been swapped with the Empress Dowager's son. And that it was actually the Empress Dowager's son (the previous Emperor's second son) who Fengming killed with honey. And with how much Jinshi looks like Ah Duo? Well...

We know Maomao often smells stuff to detect poison, so maybe there's something that lady is wearing could be dangerous, or even the bitter smell itself could be a symptom of something.

Court ladies are something like a secretary or office worker. So, she was to be a ‘Court Lady’, and as we saw, she failed the exam and is now his personal servant. The old lady is the Head Lady-in-Waiting. Maomao should have studied, as she is not going to escape this in the long run. LOL

I am working in the traditional chinese medicine industry so here's something about the cordyceps sinensis. We don't use them as aphrodisiac mordern days but as a lung replenishment for patients with chronic respiratory diseases like COPD, asthma, post COVID conditions and supplementary treatment of lung Ca post-Sx/Rtx/Ctx. The arsenic/heavy metal thing is mainly a problem of cultivated cordyceps sinensis due to heavy land and water pollution nowadays. Naturally occuring cordyceps sinensis does not have such problems but are very rare. Cordyceps sinensis cost from 500-1500 usd/tael (approx. 37g) recently

I think the flowers in the OP are Datura Stramonium. From my pharmacology exam I know that it contains scopolamine, so it's a plant with a pharmaceutical use, since scopolamine is an anticholinergic drug. Maybe Maomao will use it in the next episodes?

It is also very dangerous because everything about it is toxic. The most well known side effects are hallucinations , hyperthermia, Tachycardia… It has a very bad reputation because it can cause death and was used in witchcraft and criminal activities.😢 and today, since it is an invasive specie that grows near or in crop fields, there is a risk that they contaminate the harvested crops (I just read that there was a case of 200 intoxicated people in Australia not so long ago). It could be an allegory of a new scheming court lady/ Consort?

Well, being an anticholinergic it literally blocks your muscles, you can't move(that means it can block your respiratory muscles and you die a terrible death). In phytotherapy it's used, in really low doses, against asthma, and one of its salts is the main active ingredient of Buscopan. It's also very famous for being used as a truth serum. Almost all the Solanaceae are very toxic (Nightshade and potato plant) so they can be used as poison. An interesting flower nonetheless.

After I binge read through volume 4 of the books, I can confirm, that opening is 100% spoiler clips, lol. Some of those scene were bringing back the tears. Edit: It's driving me crazy. I think it's mentioned at end of last season that a new consort is moving in, and that was the reason for Ahduo's demotion. Makes zero sense in historical context, as other than the empress, no other consort position runs like that, where you need to vacate one to allow the other, but that's their plot point, artistic licensing I guess.

If we use the standard of the last dynasty, then you probably need 2 million dollars RMB, which is around 220k US, not bad, right? However if we use the standard of dynasty closest to the depiction of the show then you need 2 million dollars US, so starts saving?

It would be another episode or two before Dr Elise gets into the nitty-gritty medical bits, but it would be interesting to see Zach's perspective. Things to look forward to shortly, medical technology equivalent to late ~1700s and how they could treat the emperor's conditions under those limitations, and a comparison to what we could do today. Dr Elise deals more with surgery, but now and she also deal with diagnosis, and non-surgical interventions that might benefit from a modern pharmacist's perspective

Me too, the new OP has very nice visuals, but I still like Hana ni Natte, the first OP song-wise. I think what Jinshi wants to give Maomao is to give her a chance to open new doors. If she had become a court lady, Maomao might have better chances to be a court apothecary. With all his connections, even Jinshi could not just drop a nobody into a high ranking position.
