Part 2 of my How-To Guide on the creation of a map for Cities:Skylines
Recap:
1) Be clean and consistent when laying networks in 12's
2) Look for a balance of buildable area vs non-buildable area, and run your highway through, accordingly
3) Visualize where the player will connect to the highway and what surrounding land it will serve
4) Variance can be a good thing if done properly.
5) Remember that you are leading the player when laying your infrastructu

Thank you for this sir I’v been building on your maps since the first one back in 2018 amazing work and the fact we get thoses stunning visuals totally vanilla is just mind blowing My favorite one is Revelstoke the old one 2019

Thank you for sharing your thought process on the road/rail layouts. some things i consider different: one of it is in europe the road was first and then the rail had to fit in. and second one: since i most of the time use height maps and therefor the terrain is pretty much in place i look how would one planer put in a road so that is most efficient. follow the terrain but also check the playability. but also important thing is, it must look cool :)

Yes sir, your terrain party method would achieve the same outcome I have no doubt. I’m glad I covered my butt about railroads in North America, I thought about it just as I was saying it. A large number of places here formed on the railroad minus coastal cities.

I am really enjoying the explanation and progression on how to start. I have been a slave to height maps and struggle with terrain issue vs. flat land. I'll try this flat map with custom terrain method. Because I use height maps, I would always lay down the river then the roads, they are already drawn in. Switching that sequence makes sense.

I like your choice of words. Yeah I can agree with you. The terrain map confines you to work with what you got, as opposed to my way which really takes the handcuffs off. @@BringerOfFire Wow, thanks for the reply. I definitely have a passion for map building, rarely do I build cities. My first map Pic Lodge Channel was a hot mess. I tried to bang something out without really understanding the complexities in nature and the perspective of the guy playing the map. I appreciate your patience and definitely reach out. Thanks

@@BringerOfFire actually there is also a mix of both approaches... i mean it still needs ages to finish them but i.e. i have a vision for what i want one part of the map be like but lacked the inspiration of another so i looked for a height map to give me something that speaks to me and to work of that. in the end i combined like 6 terrain height map pieces with my first darft but it is still pretty much all hand drawn as the clearer your vision for an area becomes eventual changes are more likely but terrain maps give you something for your imagination to work with.
