Highly educational series. I’m a novice woodworker so there are many bits and pieces that will be useful no matter what I’m working on. Thanks

Nice to see you back, Steve. Question re: when you glue end grain like your cross braces. I see you glue and also use pocket screws...makes sense. Do you ever apply a coat of glue on the end grain, let it dry and soak in a bit, and then do a final glue so your get maximum glue strength. I thought I heard about that technique but not sure if it was your idea also. Thanks. Rich.

Hi Rich, I've heard two wildly different theories on using a first coat of glue then a second... one theory says it makes the joint stronger and one says it makes it weaker. I don't know, maybe someone from Titebond will weigh in and let us know. Thanks for watching!

Rich, I did hear back from TiteBond and this is what they say: "Yes, we recommend thinning a small amount of glue and painting that on the end grain. Let that dry up for about fifteen minutes and bond up with normal viscosity glue. This will help with the overall strength. I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to contact us for further information." So now we know... thanks for asking a great question!

Great job Steve! Love watching your videos. By the way, you might want to check your microphone. I don't think it has been working.

Boy Steve, you weren't ling about those massive bookcases. Very nice job by the way! One question about the under shelf support, how strong are they under a load of heavy books? Do they make that much difference installed flat like that?

Hi Dale, Thanks for watching! I did a "deflection" test before adding the face frame and under-shelf support, and with 40 pounds of weight in the center of the shelf, the shelf deflected 1/8". After installing the face frame and support, I started piling on weights and got up to 110 pounds and there was no deflection at all. I stopped after that because I ran out of room to get the weights in the center of the shelf, but I thought that 110 pounds was pretty good.
