I have made traditional archery bows for several years. My son has developed a love for fly fishing. I have not. That said, he saw my skills building the bows from exotic woods and asked me to make him a landing net. I didn't even know what a landing net was. I found your videos and they are awesome. Please do more of them. If you want a challenge look I to coco bolla and ebony woods. Ebony in its natural state looks like charcoal but sands like a rock. It's beautiful. Keep up the good work

Thanks for the kind word, Tom! And glad you jumped into the world of net building--having a background in trad bows will certainly be a huge leap forward! I have some builds on deck that I think you'll find amazing, with figured bubinga, koa, and a species even I haven't been able to identify!

Excellent work, thin maple strips always cooperate better than thick ones. 😊 I appreciate you sharing the brass swivel link, have a few nets in the final stage and wanted to use this swivel.

I love your nets so much I started making one. Then I got to the hoops and decided to make a fly tying station and then finished my teardrop camper. ...because I don’t have a drum sander. I looked at making a DIY drum sander, then wondered about doing what you did, taping to a sled piece and sending through the planer. Why wouldn’t that work? All my other projects are finished and my landing net handle is staring me straight in the eye. Your videos are fascinating.

Oh man, the project struggle is real for sure! Great work on moving things forward on all fronts though! As for the sled concept, in theory it should work the same, so long as you is enough double-stick tape on each end. And the 1/8” mark is a good number to shoot for, but if you can’t get that thin, get as close as possible and simply soak the strips in water for a day before steaming and you should be able to get a great bend from the material. Let it sit in the form (pre-glue) a bit longer to air-out, then glue it up and clamp (also let it set in the form about 2x longer). Should be good to go!

@@RiverbendWoodworks Thank you. This is why I love this channel. Direct and quick communication with the KZbin star himself! Is there a way to ask questions without it being public? I might have some questions once I get ready to do this. Nobody wants to see all my silly questions (probably including you) 😃

When it comes to learning new stuff, there's no such thing as a silly question! But if you'd like to send one direct to me, you can send me a message via Instagram. I have a link in my About page here, or you can simply follow there. My Instagram handle is: @riverbend_woodworks and I am (unfortunately, I guess) always on there :-P But please, consider posting any questions here, as they can really be a huge help to others in the same boat! Thanks for the kind words, Glenn!

Fantastic Video! Aside from buying a net to trace out the shape to create a form, is there another way that you use to create the form that perfectly fits the nets you use? thanks
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
I basically start with the net basket and work out from there. The basket itself, being soft silicone, will take the shape you create for it. The fun part is the net design is totally up to your taste. You can do more traditional, like this smaller net, or something a bit different in a tear drop shape--and it's all done with similar net baskets. You can do the math figure out the proper dimensions, of course, or even use CAD programs, but trying by-hand is half the fun! I will have a video showing my process in the near future though, so check back for that!

You're really talented I must say. A true inspiration. I just have to get started my self. From where do you get the net? Fishpond?? I've tried to buy some, but since Covid entered the gamefield the shipping over seas doesn't work as earlier.. Greetings from Sweden Tomas

Thanks Tomas, much appreciated. Here in the states, I unfortunately rely too much on Amazon for much of my online shopping, and that is where I get the Fishpond nets from. Not sure their overseas shipping capabilities, but it might be worth looking into and ordering a few if you can. Here's a link to the net I used in this build: www.amazon.com/FishPond-Nomad-Replacement-Rubber-Net/dp/B00QB658BS?pd_rd_w=F1yIa&pf_rd_p=306cc3dd-f716-4afe-8aeb-47781d60c63f&pf_rd_r=2NQZPDDSZBQ4KS3AHZRG&pd_rd_r=305fdc52-8060-404d-b518-84cd0dfa792b&pd_rd_wg=l0veT&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_csi_vtp_0_t

Beautiful net! I am in the process of making one myself and have a couple of questions if you have time to answer. How many coats of Dalys and what grit sandpaper do you use between coats? You mentioned a poly satin, what brand and how many coats? I sure hope mine comes out as nice as yours.
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks Жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! I usually go with two coats of Dalys, sanding with 800-grit in between coats. For clear top coats I’ll usually apply 5-6 coats. Dalys is a great option for stain coats as well.

I want to make my own net. What supplier of rubber net baskets do you recommend?
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 8 ай бұрын
I typically go through Amazon for mine and search: replacement silicone net basket. The one used in this video is from a company called FishPond. Great net quality and includes a large needle and tie-in materials. You can also go through the website: Nets that Honor the Fish or their website: flyfishingnets.net They have great stuff too!

Great looking net! I’m in the process of building my 3rd net. I like the swivel idea, but what kind of glue are you using to make sure it doesn’t come out?
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! They're terribly addicting to make, aren't they?! For glueing in the swivel, I use Starbond Thick adhesive. I always apply enough to get some amount of squeeze-out when the swivel is pressed in, but I wipe is smooth and that makes a nice waterproof seal. Regarding whether they stay put, I've pulled insanely hard on these when I first started installing this style and haven't been able to budge one yet! Thanks for watching, and let me know if you have any suggestion for build videos in the future!
