This net pissed me off. With most builds you'll have a small thing happen with the build here or there, but seldom do potentially project-ending issues pop up and challenge the process like this. In the end, it all came out beautiful, but dang was it a journey.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Catch you on the next one!

Sweet!! Fish on!! You make me want to try this some day but all I need is another project to add to my 500 other things I do and of course a space for a steam pipe. I built 1 years ago out of PVC pipe and I drilled holes in the sides to put peg shelving into and made some little wall hanging shelf boats. I believe I gave it to my neighbor for doing some bent wood around his stair banisters. I told him to keep it because I have always planned on making a bigger one. Well now, I guess I gotta try and figure it out looks like fun with a headache!! Hahaha!! I love your work! Thank you for sharing with all of us and sharing your positive inspirations!! Even though you live on the west side of this state! Hahaha!! Thank you!! I love the company of having my family involved in what I'm doing as well especially my children and now grandchildren!! Teach her well!

I think I will be giving the PVC pipe steam box a try myself as it sounds really, really efficient. My ply steam boxes just kind of puke steam out more than I'd hope. I love having my minions in and around the shop. I hope it rubs off on them as they get older and inspires them to build cool stuff and helps them not set limits on what they can learn and create.

I love the look after the fix. Awesome work, love the videos.

I have to say I am a big fan of that fix as well! It actually looks quite elegant in all reality…just wish it wasn’t done under duress with hours of time spent getting to that point 😅

Beautiful finish! What did you learn? Moisture and glue don't mix. Now you know. As far as screw- ups, you adapted perfectly. I have never carved anything in my life, where I didn't have to adapt something at some point. You already know that, and yes, you will probably chamfer the edges on all future nets from now on because it looks great! Well done!

Yeah, it was certainly a shocker watching the whole darn thing delaminate in front of me. Such a bummer, but that’s how we learn.

Absolutely beautiful work! Thanks for sharing the mistakes too. It helps think maybe someday I can become a craftsman such as you. I’m sure I would have lost my s#!+ if that’s happened to me.

I sure hope you can jump into making something like this as well. Creating something others can enjoys for years that is a 1:1 in the world is rare these days and it feels awesome to make it for them. And yes, much cursing commenced off camera when it delaminated….much cursing 😂

Have you noticed any considerable difference between steaming kiln dried vs air dried wood for your nets?
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 7 ай бұрын
In all honesty, I have not. I should add that basically 95% of my material for the strips is kiln dried, with only a handful of my bends being super figured material that I knew to be air dried for 10+ years. I've found it really comes down to picking the figured pieces and placing them with no defects on the edges (though clearly it can happen, as it did in the build). Thanks for watching!

Fail to fabulous love the double chamfer look. Looks super clean. Great work as always, do you have a website?

I actually do not. Was thinking of putting one together though…more of a chance to share the antics from my small shop, but also in case an extra net or lure build goes up for sale. So perhaps later this year it could be a reality. Thanks for the kind words! It’s nice when a project comes back from the brink.

Very talented, nice work. What is the finished thickness of your nets?

You said it was cold. Did you glue ever freeze? I have had that ruin glue.
@RiverbendWoodworks

I’m fortunate that my shop does stay well above freezing, but the combo of heat and cold on the strips cold have played a factor? I’m leaning toward my impatience with the steam bending-through-glue up steps. Certainly something you want to take your time with.

Why are all landing nets laminated? can you not make a landing net from a solid piece of wood.
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 2 ай бұрын
I have also wondered this very thing! It’s been on my hit list to do a video attempting a full hoop bend and will plan on giving it a shot in the future.
@Sarge43

@@RiverbendWoodworks I guess what I’m asking is why can’t you just cut the net frame out of one solid piece of wood. Would it be to brittle as one solid piece without bending any kind of wood? The reason I’m asking is because I want to build a net but don’t have all the tools to do laminating and bending. I was just curious if there was a reason for all of that. I have some nice oak and I want to build one, but I don’t want to waste it if its not going to be strong enough.
@RiverbendWoodworks
@RiverbendWoodworks 2 ай бұрын
@@Sarge43 in that case it comes down to two factors: wood wastage and weakened grain structure. The cost of a 3/4" x X" wide oak board would be very, very expensive, and the cross grain sections would be considerably weaker than the rest of the net. Would it hold up? Most likely, but if any water was introduced to the end grain it would quickly destroy it. I'm considering ripping a 3/4" x 5/8" strip of solid oak and doing a bend with that to see if it can handle the bend radius (not thinking it will no matter how much steam is applied) but seems fun to try!
