No disrespect to Auston or John, but Rielly has always sounded like a captain to me. One of the more grounded, pragmatic Leafs I've seen in recent years. The "woke" era we are living in Sports world is to have the top scorer be the Captain of the Team. It's so predictable. I don't think Austin is a good speaker. George Armstrong of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1960's won 4 Stanley Cups as Captain. Now, "Army" did not have big numbers for scoring, but he was the Captain and did get a lot of respect by his team mates like Frank Mahovlich, Tim Horton, Dave Keon. I was not not impressed by Auston's statements. He called his Captaincy as a "new role". Being Captain in the NHL is much different than adapting to the role you play. It should be earned first. Just winning scoring titles doesn't actually prove you are a Captain. It takes much more character than that.

Imagine if Marner took less to stay in Toronto like Crosby did in Pittsburgh. Mitch has the chance to really show that he wants to stay in Toronto and really wants to win. He's made a lot of money already and will make more than he or his family will ever need. Time to use your actions instead of words. The fans of this team would all jump on his side, it's not that hard.

There's no way he deserves less then Nylander. I would never take less. Nobody knows when their career will be over. Crosby, at this stage of his career, is not worth 8.7M per. Marner is far more valuable then Nylander. Any real fan can clearly see that

Marner is the 2nd best offensive player and the best overall. He should not take less to play then they've offered Nylander for obvious reasons. 2. Taking less money doesn't mean winning and doesn't stop anybody from continuing to belittle him, plus why didn't Nylander or Matthews take less? 3. Nobody knows how long they have in their career and should make as much as possible just in case it ends sooner rather then later, plus Marner donates alot of his money to different things. 3. Nobody with Marners skill would take less money to play in a market like Toronto, not to mention the taxes. 4. Some mat consider that Crosby took a discount to stay in Pittsburgh but he didn't. He wanted to stay and is superstitious about his number. On top of that, at the point he's at with his career, $8.7M is not a discount, it's an overpayment. I hope that cleared up more of what I meant by my original reply

Grow up. Marner is currently rank 12 in maple leaf playoff history for points. Matthews is rank 14, Nylander is rank 17. Marner is currently the highest point producing player in the regular season as well as the playoff season for the maple leafs and you guys keep bashing him.
