The talk of going shooping again for the 6th year (72nd month, but who’s counting) for another defence partner he help Reilly is starting up again. Here’s a newsflash, you could sign Josi or Hedmen to play with Reilly and Reilly would hold those guys back. There’s not a defender on the planet that can allow Reilly 1st line minutes! Morgan Rielly would be a # 3 or 4 on another team. His contact would be very attractive if not for the no move clauses. I have to laugh at how many people are blaming Marner for the series loss. It's a team effort and other than Nylander the whole team disappeared when it came to scoring. Don't get me wrong I thought that the team as a whole showed up to play (especially physically). A team that was so well known in the regular season for giving up the puck in their own end played really good defense and that includes the forwards coming back to help out. Why isn't anyone talking about the lack of goal scoring by guys like Matthews. He's a great player but unfortunately he like Marner, Tavares and a few others just can't seem to score when it really counts. 1 for 21 on the power play says a lot.. It's tough being a Leaf fan and I'm one so I know the pain....lol Good job Andrew. Keep the conversation going..

I agree. Marner, Matthews, Nylander, McMann and Woll were all injured and it still took Boston Game 7 OT to beat the Leafs. I maintain this team CAN win as is.

Dale hunter and Mark Hunter should be hired for the leafs. Dale is a great coach. He changed ovi and made him play defence and throw body checks and play hard. It was short but he did good. He has a history of solid playing style

They aren’t trading any of the big names. They all have no move. This team needs a reliable starter/backup goalie to tandem with Woll. With all the injuries they still were one goal away from winning the series. Everyone needs to calm down. Resign a few key guys and bring in some new blood. Let a few guys walk to create some cap flexibility.

Dude we can’t view Morgan as a horse. He’s been a staple in this lineup for 10+ years now and his main upside as an offensive defensemen was nonexistent prior to core 4 arriving, and playing behind elite regular season players. He’s a 3rd best dman on a legitimate cup contending blue line. We can’t say he’s a horse when he’s played like a horse 2 series the entire 10 year period he’s been a leaf. It’s not good enough and we have to stop acting like guys can’t be moved because they love the city and/or are great pros. Being a cup contender is not about optics of who keeps a guy because he’s been here the longest and deserves the cup. Unfortunately, Morgan had a contract to negotiate and it’s not worthy of his ability because he’s not a #1. For that reason he is 100% in the trade chips

I think every single person in Leafs nation is onboard with a Tavares trade. He's not an $11M player, not by a long shot. Getting him off the cap would ABSOLUTELY be 100% of my focus, if I were Treliving. Get him off the books, no matter what the return (or even IF he gets a return) -- selling Tavares for a backup goalie who's never played in the NHL, a 1 for 1 trade, that's fine! Marner for me is tougher. He's a 100 point player, he's been playing like that for 4 or 5 years. The return on Marner should be significant, something like a 1st rounder, a 2nd, and a decent D-prospect, something like this. The hockey world knows the Leafs are in a bind, and I don't think many teams that would potentially taking on Marners contract would part with two 1sts, a 2nd or 3rd, and then a good defenceman, or something like this. I can't see that happening. I agree with Andrew, if we can give Tavares (even if it's for free), the Marner question becomes less pertinent.

I don’t know why everyone has been all over Tavares , ya he’s slowed down but back when they signed him everyone was so excited and happy and they knew that that the last couple years of his contract was going to come back and bite them, but I do agree it’s time to move him if you can. And for anyone/ anything, the cap hit is way more important right now and if he and Mitch don’t want to wave their no trade then they have to get tough and put them In the press box or something. I know it sucks but the mr nice guy thing is over. They need to make these changes.

Great content Andrew. Looking forward to all the off-season videos. For me, the answer is trading Marner. It’s becoming more evident that he falls off when under pressure both on and off the ice. He’s a superstar and he’ll probably win a cup elsewhere but I don’t think it happens in Toronto. His handling of the media and his performance in games 5, 6, and 7 every year shows that it just isn’t working for him here. I’d also have a serious conversation with Tavares. Is he willing to commit to the team for the rest of his career at a low cap hit? If so, get that contract done after July 1 and keep him on the team at his high cap hit this upcoming season. Tavares may not have put up big numbers last year but his effort was there and the underlying numbers were positive too. If we can obtain a second line center then we can even experiment with him on the LW. It’s also worth mentioning that none of the above matters if we don’t fix our D and goaltending. As you mention, we need to balance the backend with puck movers and physical defenders. Lots of work to be done.

How many times has he been behind the other team's net, meaning that one of the forwards that are paid to score have to get back to cover for him. Of course if we ever get to the point of trading players with a no move clause ... it might result getting a list of one or two teams. If everyone knows the Leafs have little to no options, that team will not offer fair value. Once a player's NMC kicks in their trade value becomes very limited due to limited options. The Leafs might have a choice of taking less for Marner, or wait for the season end and watch them walk away for nothing.

I know JT has his heart set on playing in Toronto. But at some point I have to think he at least wants a chance with a true contender. With the state of the leafs right now I don't think that time is with the leafs . I'm sure he still has really good value and could bring in some assets. Having said that send out assets to facilitate a deal should not be an option. Leafs are in this situation, because they gave away assets. Retaining salary seams they only way to go, even if its to get some cap space.

I think Joe Woll should the next playoff series. I said that this year after seeing him against Florida last year. He will be fine but it would be good to have a solid backup. I think it’s worth keep Marner and trade JT. Mathew’s might not resign after he is done his next contract. Mitch doesn’t have to be the top guy in the playoffs. He is good defensively. He loves being a leaf. A new coach may change him.

Marner has shot himself in the foot with how he acted last contract negotiation. How he has not shown up on series clinching games and then this year with his comment saying we are gods around here. Which I believe was the final straw. Best thing for both marner and the organization is for him to move on. But he has no one to blame but himself. I also don’t see marner putting in the work that nylander has since they were drafted nylander has continued to get stronger and stronger and marner is pretty much the same gifted small player that can’t drive to the net while holding a guy off.

I don’t think the Leafs have to do any moves other than decide what they want to do with RFA’s and UFA’s. If you are thinking they should re-evaluated the core of this team you maybe right, but I don’t believe in making a trade for any other reason other than having it improve the team. My feeling is there is no player that’s an untouchable if the deal makes the Leafs a better team. Keep in mind we do not determine if a trade 🎉improves the leafs, that job rests with the Leaf management team. I will say this Leaf Nation will make a lot of noise regarding how to improve the leafs and it’ll be interesting to see what transpires.

When your team scores more than two goals only ONCE in the past 15 playoff games, it's time for a change. One of Marner/Tavares has to go, maybe even both. I can also see Rielly being dealt, but it'd be less likely than the other two. It depends who would be coming back.

Good trades to look at, good value to other teams who need those pieces. Leafs need a reliable #1 goaltender, proven in the playoffs; strong, young, physical defence; and a strong power forward (or two) to set up plays for Matthews and Nylander, be a physical presence in front of the opposing net, and offer protection for the stars--like Gretzky used to have.

Morgan stays. JT extends on a very team friendly contract 2-3 mil per. Those are easy. Mitch will be asked to waive his NTC. IF he waives they will be able to make a deal maybe even a good one. If he refuses to waive it becomes a total circus starting in training camp with the fan base potentially going full Larry Murphy on his ass. The only way Marner stays is if he is willing to extend long term on July 1 at a major discount like 8x8 or maybe 8x9. Is Mitch willing to take a 15 million dollar haircut to stay a Leaf? I doubt it. Who would? It's not reasonable. Hopefully he waives and the team can use the assets back and the freed up cap space to round out a roster. Treliving seems like he knows what he's doing. Benoit Jones Domi and Bertuzzi were all pretty shrewd signings last summer Klingberg not so much.

I would trade Mitch Marner before trading John Tavares. At least John Tavares is solid on the puck and can set up plays. He's excellent in getting the garbage hard goals around the net. He isn't afraid to body check and knock some players into the boards. Mitch Marner is maybe 100 lbs soak n wet. Gets bounced like a yoyo in the playoffs and can't do a damn thing cause his ass is fallen on the ice 85 percent of a playoff game. Everyone and their sister knows he's a superstar, top notch player during the regular season. We need playoff studs like a Matthew Tkachuk. Yes i know he's staying in Florida. Thats just an example. Peace, brothers and sisters. That's my 5 cents for now.

Marner should be moved, or he will be lost for nothing at all as a UFA after next season...and despite what the AM and WN say to the press, they were giving it to Marner big time on the bench for his lack of effort, you dont want that kind of dissent on the team, Tavares is a poor on ice captain, doesnt lead by example and doesnt rally the players either.I think Rielly is ok but he needs the right partner to cover for him when he rushes the puck and gets caught out of position which happens often.Tre should be allowed to do his job without Shanahan's interference, you cannot judge a GM if he has a boss who vetoe's some deals, I have been watching the Leafs since 73 and this current version is the most talented, and least spirited edition ever, i just do not see passion and the will to overcome and win from this bunch, defeat is accepted far to easily.

Everyone says Marner is no good in the playoffs yet he has 50 points in 57 playoff games. Pretty damn good. I think Marner never truly recovered from his high ankle sprain. Matthews and Nylander were hurt and get a free ride on the excuse train. Marner gets hurt and nobody seems to care. The hypocracy of Leaf fans is so sad. Watch no heart Auston and floating Willy be very average without Marner's or Tavares' set ups. Say goodbye to 60 goal seasons, Auston. Say goodbye to 40 goal seasons, Willy. Say goodbye to even making the playoffs. Matthews and Nylander are not the two to build your core around. Wait and see.
