Maple's Leg - The Consultation
Maple met with an orthopedic team of veterinarians. Dr. Brian Beale, who fixed my late heart dog Jazzy many years ago, recently opened three clinics in Houston, one of which specializes in artificial legs. Three specialists examined her leg and discussed future options. We are leaning towards a temporary leg when she's a little bigger, followed by a permanent prosthetic when she's fully grown. We’re hoping the end of her affected leg will grow a bit more so that we can attach a temporary leg. If not, we won’t be able to pursue that option. When she’s fully grown, she might be a good candidate for a permanent prosthetic. Dr. Beale wants to save the leg and use it to create an extension. I’d want that too, if possible.
I know most three-legged (or even two-legged) animals can live full lives. When Jazzy was diagnosed with bone cancer, I didn’t hesitate for a second to have her leg amputated, and she quickly learned to walk on three legs. But if Maple has the option to keep her leg and use it with the help of a prosthetic, I want to at least explore that possibility. You might wonder why not use the resources to save more cats. I tend to focus on quality over quantity when working with animals-I’d rather give my all to the ones I help.
If that’s going to be the case, she’ll need to be adopted locally by a very committed family willing to continue working closely with us. For now, she needs to grow and build strength in her working legs. She also needs to get socialized so that she'll be more comfortable in the clinic.
