On a horrible rainy day how lovely to look back at your nursery in the summer. It has brightened the day.

Very good advice - thanks! Also, after defoliating, they drink up a bit less water for a few weeks so if it's a hot summer, it can help to prevent the soil drying out so quickly during hot afternoons, until the new buds leaf out. That's my experience here in Madrid. Happy Christmas Peter and EVERYONE!!

Any other tips for keeping a maple happy in a Mediterranean climate? California has a similar climate and i just got a maple that I'm looking to keep healthy and thriving through our summers and there isnt a ton of info that I’ve found on the internet about keeping maple bonsai in California climates

@@systematicchaos21 when in full leaf Japanese Maples can drink up a lot of water; on a hot day (95°F and higher) they can need watering several times a day to avoid leaf burn. Even so, you might need to take them out of the full-on direct sunlight in the hottest hours. This summer my JMs burnt in full sun and lost the complete top layer of leaves (but no long-term harm done, as Peter Chan said). So for the summer months going foward I will put the JMs under semi shade so they don't get full-on direct sunlight when it's really hot. My trident maple suffered less. (Either the trident leaves are tougher, or the fatter trunk is pumping up the water more efficiently, or both. ) Keep in mind that while defoliation can help, it will also temporarily weaken the tree and slow down the trunk growth so if you're trying to fatten them up it will take longer. An advantage of defoliation: it's a simple method of pest control for aphids and the like. Although, maples don't seem to have many infestations as some other trees like fruiting trees. Hope that helps!

@@BlueSkyBonsai that helps a lot, thank you!! It’s definitely going to be a learning process for me! It’ll be the first summer that I’ll have a truly mature maple in my care

The leaves on my maples from Herons seeds planted early this year turned stunning reds towards autumn. I cant wait for them to get growing again in Spring. Very successful germination by the way!

I purchased a maple tree this summer and all the leaves dried up and fell off living the tree naked. I have watered it but see no response with any growth or new leaves. Is my tree a goner and no good anymore?
@Yurup4 жыл бұрын
Scratch a small bit of the bark a from branch off, is it green and alive or is that part dead? If its dead go down more and try again, if there is green somewhere it is still alive, if there is no green anywhere anymore the tree is dead. (example movie kzbin.info/www/bejne/haXUenxtYqqfeKM )

Trees in pots need constant watering, even twice a day if the season is hot and the pot small. Watering *after* all the leaves have shriveled may be too late.
@Stettafire3 жыл бұрын
@@pansepot1490 To confuse matters the symptoms of under and over watering are the same. Could be an overwatering issue also. Best way to know is to check the soil. If the soil is dry a fingers depth down then it needs water if its damp then it does not need water In saying that I'm used to growing plants that don't uptake a large amount of water

When you say after you cut dry leaves that you’ll get new leaves, you mean next year you’ll get new leaves right? I’ve had some issues with my Bloodgood drying out and dropping leaves that don’t come back the same year. I’m new to this so be gentle. Haha

How is the tree able to survive with no foliage for photosynthesis? Or does it reproduce so quickly in the grow period it doesn't affect it?
@Stettafire3 жыл бұрын
It will store that energy for a while, it has some in reserves it can use before it starts to suffer. Some plants also go into dormancy and use less energy during certain times of year
