The source novel came out in 1972, when the Vietnam War was still very much active. Back in those days, if you were a drifter or hitchhiker with long hair, you'd be hassled by some cops and by some ordinary citizens. You were viewed as a hippie, a druggie, a political activist weakening America's resolve. (Speaking from personal experience.) If you also wore any military gear, you were viewed as either parodying/satirizing/disparaging the military, or (worst case of all) being a member of groups like Vietnam Vets Against the War. If you look close at Teasle's desk, he's a Korean War vet. A guy who did his job, came home, and was just forgotten by the public. Some Korea vets particularly disliked Vietnam vets because they were at least getting attention (whether positive or negative). It's not easy to explain the social and political interactions of those times, two generations later.

Doug, your comment is exactly what I would have written. In January 1973 I was transferring from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC to the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea. Back then, if you were flying on a military fare, you had to be in uniform. Swell. So I was in my Army dress greens in the San Francisco airport with other guys arriving on other flights from across the country. We were going to board a bus to the replacement depot and then to Travis Air Force Base for our government-contract flight to Osan USAF base in Korea. From a high of 500,000 troops in Vietnam in 1968, there was literally a handfull left in Vietnam. For the U.S., the war was over. Nevertheless, as we were carrying our luggage and duffle bags through the airport concourses, people would stare at us. There were mumbled comments made toward us. At least once there was a guy who spit at us. Rural America back then (and now for that matter) was largely patriotic. Had Rambo been clean shaven with a good haircut and clean field jacket, someone may have given him a lift and a cuppa coffee. Instead, the long hair, dirty jacket, lack of shave and bandanna made him look like a anti-military hippie at best, and a member of American flag-burning SDS, Vietnam Vets Against the War, and violent anti-government groups at worst. Remember when they tried to shut-down the federal government, including the Pentagon, in Wash DC back in early 1971? One had to live those days to comprehend the chaos across the U.S.

Vietnam veterans were not treated kindly upon their return. My dad was in Vietnam and I served for 20 years later. I had to see his eyes over and over as people thanked me for my service. No one thanked him. He has since passed away.

The sad fact is, a lot of Vietnam vets became drifters or homeless after the war because of the consequeces of PTSD and "the system" wasnt built to support a soldiers mental health after fhey were intergrated back into society. You could say their country used them up and spit them out. My dad was lucky... he found work again, and he did well for himself... but he alwaus had that trauma in there and it would show itself in extreme anger and drinking. He almost never talked about it... but once in a grest while a story would come out at the most random time... like he had to get it out of his head. Brian Denehe's sherriff sees Rambo as "just another vietnam drifter"... with all that the stereotype brings with it.

It's uncomfortable to talk about and the vets it happened to didn’t deserve it, but one reason many people didn’t want drifters and homeless folks in their towns is because they tend to have serious mental health issues, they break into cars, they leave trash and needles laying around, etc. And unfortunately, this also includes many veterans. It's sad but it's true. And when word gets out that a place with good weather is soft on crime and doesn't hassle vagrants, they tend to flock there. And sadly, the area tends to go to shit as more people move there. Take a look at San Francisco and Portland, Oregon. Both cities have human beings pooping in the streets and trash is everywhere you look. Cars get stolen constantly and public bathrooms have needles and homeless addicts passed out or smoking fent off of foil in stairways. We have to find a way to get people the help they need while also not allowing people to just take advantage of others as they break into cars and do hard drugs and refuse to even attempt to get their shit together.

I think most men who have been in combat feel that way eventually. I Medic in the 3ID. I was in combat in Iraq and got the CMB. The problem for combat veterans Vietnam is that society at that time took their angst of the war out on the Veterans who were in combat. Vietnam vets returning from the war in the 70s were generally looked down upon by the public, with disdain, because it was a war not supported by the public. They were called baby killers, amongst otther things. Any person that looked to be a vet, like Rambo, was often mistreated. Both my uncle and my dad were vietnam vets and experienced this. They dont like to talk about it.

My father, retired Army, did two tours in Vietnam and my uncle, retired Airforce, did three tours in Vietnam. They both told me things that happened to them when they got back home. The face spitting, name calling, and my father told me he was hit in the head with a rock, that somebody threw at him, at the airport. I, myself, a Navy veteran, go to the VA for my doctor's appointments, are now seeing many Vietnam veterans "dropping like flies" like the Korean War veterans and the WWII veterans before them. Soon there will be no one from those era to tell us their tales and that treasure in itself will be gone into the history, forever. With my generation, it'll be roughly 20 years before we will be "dropping like flies" too.

My Dad had two tours in Vietnam. He said that the most of the Veterans were treated poorly and weren't wanted back. This movie is truthful in what it shows. The treatment was terrible in the this time. Now I would say it has gotten better but we still have alot to learn from these veterans. The worst you could do in my mind to a veteran is disrespect them. Give them your respect even if you don't believe in what they fought for they deserve that much at least to be treated with dignity.

Stallone is definitely an actor rather than just a muscle hamster. One of his best acting roles is in Copland which is a tense James Mangold (Logan) thriller with Robert De Nero, Harvey Kietel, Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and many more.

First Blood is such a simplistic but layered movie. The term "Rambo" still exists today in gaming and refers to when players in a team game go off on their own, but the word also became synonymous with machismo and toughness. And yet, you see Rambo cry at the end of the movie and it is his vulnerability and choice to stand down that brings a resolution to the story. The final speech Rambo gives in this movie hits most veterans (particularly war-time veterans), the hardest. Between 2013-2014, I transitioned from the military to civilian, and if veterans are not careful, that transition period will kick them in the groin hard. Luckily in today's time period, there are plenty of resources available to assist veterans with PTSD or other transitional issues. Want to know what causes these issues to surface? In the civilian world you have nobody you can rely on unlike the military where your platoon members are always nearby. Veterans suffer from loneliness, the most, as a result. Between loneliness and lack of job prospects (military skills don't transfer into civilian life), the transition process is grueling, and sadly, can end up in suicide. Statistically, in the present day, 23 vets commit suicide in the US, daily. Honestly many veterans never do fully transition, post ETS/EAS. Let's hope something budges in the future to eliminate that horrendous statistic.

It is crazy to think how much things have changed. After this movie came out, pretty much every boy in my school over the age of 10 wore a "Rambo" knife to school. Rambo 2 is definitely worth watching.

Still, there were several on the hotel staff that weren't kind. I ended up using my govt. benefits to go to college to get better work.

The movie was based on a book. In the book the sheriff is a Korean war vet, and his wife either has died or left him. That's why he's so full of resentment. After the end of the Vietnam war the guys returning home were treated awful. A lot of people on the left associated them with the war they were against (sometimes calling them baby killers and spitting on them at the airport). Some people on the right hated that we lost the war. A lot of people on both sides worried that vets were dangerous, that they would snap due to PTSD at any second. As a result vets often had hard times finding employment, and were generally treated in a way that would never be tolerated now. Eventually the public came to understand what they were doing was wrong. This movie and others like it helped in that change. The whole "thank you for your service" comes in large part in people's commitment to never do that to our service members again.

I respect all our combat troops, but the ones I respect the most are Vietnam combat vets. The average number of total combat hours seen by a WW2 US soldier in one year was about 250. For the Vietnam vet it was around 2400. I can’t begin to imagine.

You both are too young to know but back in the days of Vietnam people hated the returning vets, called them baby killers and more, they were spit on at airports. The green berets were the like the SEALS and Rangers combined.

Different jobs, really. Green Berets are trained for warfare behind enemy lines, staying long periods behind enemy lines to conduct guerilla warfare. SEALs are more hit and evac - thus, they are trained in more methods of getting into and out of a location. Both extremely dangerous, both highly skilled - but, different jobs, different training.

This film is layered, deep and educational at a time when people didn't have the Internet. The Vietnam war experience wasn't sympathetically shown in media, and many people didn't "buy in" to the whole PTSD thing yet. 3 scenes I want to talk about are the opening, the flashbacks and the forest hunt. Opening - People knew about "Agent Orange" at the time, but as a kind of buzzword or punchline. Very few people untouched by the war thought much about the cancer, slow death and effect on military families. The audience gets a sobering splash of cold water, and we start to think about how Rambo must feel. Fantastic screenwriting. Flashbacks - Another reality of war that the public at the time never got serious about was POWs. Even now, it can seem like a random princess in a castle to be rescued in a videogame. But the torture involved was never really reckoned with by the USA (as history would prove). Once again, PTSD was something the weak or the crazy dealt with - not the strong. The flashes of torture here lay the groundwork for the monologue in the final scene. War is hell and real and touches loser and victor, weak and strong alike. Hunt - The subtext is so close to the surface here, you'll be surprised you didn't see it if you missed it the first time. Here it is very simply: the police are portrayed to be like the American soldiers and leadership in Vietnam and why we lost the war. Inexperienced, immature, drafted into a fight they didn't ask for, fighting amongst themselves, linear thinking, shooting first... They even had air superiority. You can fill in the rest yourself. But just as you wonder what the sheriff was thinking in assuming he would win this fight, you have to also wonder the USA was thinking in assuming we would win the war. It certainly wasn't with much concern about the inevitable conclusions to throwing bodies at the problem. And why does no one reacting to this movie believe what the cops are doing? It still happens today! Cops escalate a problem by demanding instant and total submission. When they encounter resistance, their only recourse is to use threats of force to make them submit. And the cops can't lose, so if resistance continues, they are empowered and protected by police culture to follow through with violence. This is how you have mentally ill people shot in the street because they didn't put their hands up, or a kid at a park with a bb gun shot within 10 seconds of the police rolling up. And the character of Art Galt is just a depiction of the percentage of bloodthirsty people out there who got themselves the perfect job if you want to take life and get away with it. The early scenes in the police station are actually a window into what is wrong with police culture. You have the prideful king shit sheriff, the older tough guy deputy who enjoys cruelty, the young guy who speaks up a bit, but is put harshly back in his place, and all the rest who just go along with their leaders. There are also little things, like when Galt first tries to shoot at Rambo in the street, the sheriff stops him, but there are no consequences, not even a look of reprimand in the sheriff's face. Because it's police vs the rest of the world - they even have their own flag. Commentary on the military-industrial complex, the media... This movie is deeep. The 80's Hollywood machine chewed up a lot of great art and packaged it for the lowest common denominator. I don't blame Stallone for taking paydays for the sequels, but this is the only Rambo movie as far as I'm concerned.

My buddy is X-Canadian Special Forces and the last remaining member of his team. He trained the SWAT in my home town in Ontario and used to laugh at them saying "I could take out your whole team by myself". He told me of a few stories of incidences with the OPP. When there was the incident at Ipperwash Beach with the natives, he was involved in infiltration and recon. If you don't know about it, it can be found on the news. I enjoyed all the movies. The last one is a real tearjerker.

This is one of my favourite movies and so different from the rest of the franchise. Stalone is known as such an action guy, but movies like this and Rocky, which are small-feeling dramas and are very solid character explorations are really what put him on the map, and where he excels.

Vietnam vets got a reall shitty deal when they came home. The public had turned against them, they just wanted to come home and rejoin the world. My dad was a Marine in Vietnam, so some of this I can say from his experiences. This movie is about PTSD, and the breakdown at the end resonates with a lot of Vets at the time. A sense of "Someone finally said it". That being said, Rambo II is the action movie you'd expect from the Rambo name. The plot is weird, but it's kind of a fun time.

Great film. The book is even better IMO - it's more emphasised that Teasle's a Korean war veteran, he's less overtly hostile, Rambo's _more_ hostile, younger and generally a more morally ambiguous character (sort of echoing the end of the movie, Rambo kinda wants to show them what he's capable of, to remind them that they're small town cops whereas he's a highly trained elite soldier).

My uncle was POW in Vietnam. My aunt was VA nurse and told me about his nightmares to one day she woke up to him choking her. Thankfully he woke up and she was VA nurse and understood. The trauma is really deep from Vietnam. I cannot imagine the horrors he faced as POW. My family is mostly military WWII, Korea, Vietnam, to include myself (Gulf War/9/11) veteran and this movie is hard watch. To see the way the cops treated him I knew he was going to snap. It truly is sad, but you were right. Rambo did his best not to harm those he didn't deem a threat or used other means to deter / injure. As the Colonel said he was stunned that Rambo let any of them live due to his training.

Fun fact. During the scene where the sherif (Brian Dennehy) arrested Rambo and took his knife, as he shoved the knife back in its holster, he accidentally stabbed himself with it because it was so sharp. Brian said he felt a tear in his eye due to the pain and had to do a re-take.

If you read the novel by David Morrell, Trautman kills Rambo at the end with a shot gun. He used his friendship to get him to drop his guard and killed him in the way that he described to the Sheriff, "Teasal." By being the only friend Rambo had left. It is a different ending for sure, that was changed for the sake of sequels. The second one is good, but I was not thrilled with the rest of them.

I like that you guys picked up what is just the ultimate in Irony, that only the rookie cop with the red hair (a YOUNG David Caruso) was the only one whose instincts told him that Rambo was not someone they wanted to mess with "I got a bad feeling about this guy" and the first to realize "we're not hunting him, he's hunting us". NONE of the experienced guys could see it.

Brian Dennehy was intended for the role of Teasle from the beginning ... the script was practically written for him. The first choice for Rambo was - unbelievably - Dustin Hoffman. Trautman was played by Kirk Douglas who left after two days of filming saying this was a "sh*t movie". Stallone was brought in last and he rewrote most of the script, also making Rambo this silent, brooding character. His famous speech at the end was mostly ad libbed and contained stories he had heard from real nam vets (especially the shoe shiner and the buddy blown to pieces). In the first screening Rambo died at the end (first he shot himself, in another version he was shot by Trautman), but the test screenings were horrible, so Stallone changed the ending he didn't like from the start to what we have today. Also, in the book Rambo just killed everyone without any distinction of friend or foe. In the Stallone version he didn't kill anyone and the only death was accidential. The bike scene and the jump onto the tree were done by Stallone, despite his fear of hights. Now the big question: WHY ?? Why did Teasle dispise Rambo that much? Teasle was a Korean war veteran! If you pay close attention you can see on the shelf/window sill behind his desk a frame with medals in it ... the three medals, from right to left, are: the Silver Star, The Purple Heart, and the Army Distinguished Service Cross. So he too was a highly decorated veteran, but he felt - like so many of his generation - that people were making too much fuss about the nam vets. Especially that thing called PTSD that he knew under the term shell shock .... nobody gave a damn about his generation and everyone had just to deal with it on their own and continue their life in a clean and civilized manner. So it wasn't jealousy, but pure disgust.

At the end when Rambo finishes his powerful dialog, he plants his face on the Colonel's ribbons and awards (Honor, duty, & Dignity) while clasping his Airborne Tab and Special Forces or Green Beret patch (the Path that led him to it) and to a feeling of belonging, family & purpose.

One thing that is often overlooked in this (and subsequent) films is the fact John Rambo won the Medal of Honor. There is no higher award for valor in the armed forces. It's never quite clear what Rambo's billet or rank was aside from being a Green Beret (the leading theory is he was a lieutenant or captain), but his service had to be more than extraordinary.

I saw this the week it came out. One quick note on something many commenter's somewhat touched on; Teasle's comment about the flag on Rambo's jacket was that it was considered improper/wrong/rude to display the American flag in any way other than "flat" unless its on a flagpole. Something I've never seen any YT reactors mention was how the flame on his torch in the cave "led" him to the vent shaft. I think its termed 'thermal dynamics' that air will move towards a higher opening. If you watch that part again, you'll notice Rambo is always "following" the flame. They went through great efforts to have that happen all through the cave scene. One of my favorite not-a-Christmas Christmas movie! This, Die Hard, & Steven Speilberg's 1941 are my top 3! People often are shocked by how John Rambo is initially treated. While this film takes it to a bit of an extreme from the beginning (Rambo getting literally driven out of town), this isn't without merit in the context of the time. In 1973 there was a catastrophic inferno at the National Records Archives that destroyed upwards of 18 MILLION veterans records. All the way into the 1990's there were vagrants posing as Vietnam Vets trying to get benefits, and often they were criminals and substance abusers. My father was a Vietnam Special Forces "Triple-Canopy" LRRP Team Leader, served two and a half tours, and left with two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars (w/ "V"), and a Purple Heart. He came back and was a Minneapolis Police officer for 30 years and retired a Detective Sergeant. This was one of his favorite movies. He was impressed by Rambo's attack on the City. Destroy the fuel depot. Destroy the power grid. Destroy the ammo cache, isolate your target. When this film was released the context was more evident. Also, the Sheriff being a veteran of the Korean War (and having been awarded the #2 award behind the CMH, the Distinguished Service Cross) plays into this, which is explained better in the novel.

Watched Rambo run out of the police station grabbing the guy off the bike. My family owns the Shell Station you see in the back ground when he blows up the gas station with the army truck. 7:27 Fun Fact: The piece of rotten canvas that Rambo turns into a makeshift "coat" was NOT a movie prop. It was actually just a piece of rotten canvas laying around...ironically because it was the only one they had, it became the most protected item on set. Stallone still owns it to this day.

16:27 Fun Fact: If you watch this clip closely you'll see that the bullets just BARELY missed Rambo's hand. In reality gunshot strikes are performed using squibs. Stallone's hand placed his hand on the crossbeam of wood where the gunshot squib was placed and the squib went off a fraction of a second AFTER his hand touched it, injuring his hand. Stallone, in the DVD commentary says that the pain was so excruciating that he was afraid to look at his hand in fear that he was missing a finger or two.
