Peter Jackson was heavily influenced by Sam Raimi and his "Evil Dead" series. In fact, his first few films were equally low budget horror/sci-fi/comedies and also VERY well done. "Bad Taste" 1987, "Meet the Feebles" 1989, and "Dead Alive" also known as "Brain Dead" 1992. In some ways, it really feels like Jackson aimed to outdo Raimi with "Dead Alive" as it feels like a sequel to "Evil Dead". It's insane!!! And since you mentioned the Muppets in this reaction, "Meet the Feebles" might be up your alley too. It has been described many times as "The Muppet Show on crack".

All of this👆 One of my favourite pieces of movie trivia is about Bad Taste, where the design for the aliens' heads was supposed to be taller, but the oven they used to cure the latex masks couldn't fit the original design, so they became shorter and rounder. It was Jackson's mom's regular kitchen oven. "I'm a Derek. And Derek's don't run."

In September of 2022 I was traveling to Pigeon Forge, TN to go to Dollywood which is an amusement park which Dolly Parton is an owner. On my trip I would pass Morristown, TN which the Evil Dead was shot. It's a little over an hour away from Pigeon Forge. So with a some studying I was able to locate the location of the road (it's not really road though) and the location of what's left of the cabin. It's on private property so you have to kind of sneak your way on the property. It was very creepy once you find the remains of the cabin which had burned down not long after filming the movie. The 2 big trees that stand outside the cabin one of them has fallen over. All that remains is part of the chimney and the hole they dug out for the trap door because the cabin didn't have a basement. I was 10 or 11 years old when I saw this (back in 1985) and this movie scared the crap out of me like no other movie had before. It took me a few years until I was brave enough to watch it again.

I was coming to the comments just to mention that this first low budget movie (splatter/horror/comedy) from the LOTR director is shocking in light of what he produced later. My older brother worked in a video store in his teens in the early 90s and made a point of watching lesser known horror, so he (and our whole family) was aware of Peter Jackson long before Heavenly Creatures (which he made a bunch of his high school friends go to see on opening weekend thinking it would be like Jackson’s ‘80s horror films with a bigger budget, not knowing it was a new direction for Jackson). I never had the stomach to sit through all of Bad Taste after my brother showed me one memorable stomach churning scene. I needed something lighter to get me into horror and my brother finally found the right entry vehicle when he took me to the theater to see the first Scream movie in theaters after he saw it opening weekend. Now I’ve seen enough and am comfortable enough that if Bad Taste ever shows up on a streaming service I have, I’ll absolutely watch it.

"You bastards, why are you torturing me like this? Why?" Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Bruce Campbell and Directorial debut of Sam Raimi. Time Capsule Fact: At the end of principal shooting in Tennessee, the crew put together a little time capsule package and buried it inside the fireplace of the cabin as a memento of the production to whomever found it. Make Your Own Blood Fact: The blood is a combination of Karo syrup, non-dairy creamer, and red food coloring. At one point, Bruce Campbell's shirt that he wears in the film was so saturated with the fake blood that after drying it by the fire, the shirt became solidified and broke when he tried to put it on. Location Location Fact: Filmed in a real-life abandoned cabin. The property's owner granted the production crew to lease the cabin, under the condition that any modifications made for filming were to be undone. The crew kept their promise and the only thing that remained in the cabin was the fireplace that was specifically built for the film. The cabin has since been destroyed and only the fireplace is still intact.

This is my favourite horror movie. The effects, the sound design, the camera work, and Baby Bruce. Linda's iconic "We're gonna get you.." is on par with Nightmare on Elm Street's "1, 2, Freddy's coming for you..". The fact this was basically a low-budget student film is astonishing, considering its execution and cultural impact on the film industry, creating the whole "cabin in the woods" horror genre. FYI, Part 2 has a 10 minute recap of part 1 as the opening, and takes us right up to the final frame of part 1, but due to Sam Raimi not having rights to footage from the 1st film, they had to reshoot, recast, and simplify the storyline so people who hadn't seen it could catch up. So that will assuage your confusion. I make sense of the folirst 10 minute recap by thinking of it as Ash having a nightmare about the events of the first film (up until he wakes up in part 2 in the chair), because dreams are often not a faithful retelling of events. The fact that Ash's mind is also greatly impacted makes him a semi-unreliable narrator, so that works too. Ash is one of the best final girls ever. Imagine having to kill your best friend, sister, and girlfriend? His character development throughout the franchise is iconic.

"If it's a similar tone to Army of Darkness..." LOL, no. The first Evil Dead is a straightforward horror film. Army of Darkness is a Three Stooges tribute... This was the first adult-rated film I ever saw (aged sixteen, IIRC), and I loved it. Believe it or not they tried to ban it in the UK in 1984, but failed. It was notorious, though, for the 'tree r*pe' and the pencil in the ankle. Have also seen it on the big screen a couple of times, at horror all-nighters. It's a gritty and entertaining grindhouse classic.

The Evil Dead - Full horror (but there is some dark comedy bits and some people find it funny because of the low budget). Evil Dead II - Horror Comedy, with good balance between the two (keep in mind the first 15-20 minutes of this film are a condensed remake/retelling of the first one). Army of Darkness - Horror Comedy Adventure, the lighter of the whole franchise. Evil Dead (2013) - FULL HORROR. Dark, gory and mean. Tiny bits of very dark humor. Evil Dead Rise - Full Horror, but it regains more dark comedic elements and has some homages to EDII. I hope you give all the movie saga a shot. I know it's been 5 months and maybe this franchise has fallen into your rearview, but I'd love to see you two react to "Evil Dead 2" and "Army of Darkness." Part 2 is basically half remake, half sequel but is the one where the tone of the series started to shift more toward horror-comedy rather than mainly horror. And, by the time they get to "Army of Darkness," it's more slapstick comedy than horror. All are good in their own way but, imo, "Evil Dead 2" is where they hit the right balance of comedy and horror. Plus, there are so many iconic scenes and iconic lines in it. If someone told me they were only going to watch one of the "Evil Dead" movies, "Evil Dead 2" is the one I'd suggest every time.

But seeing as it's October, I would say consider watching the original _Night of the Living Dead_ by George A. Romero. I'm a big zombie horror fan and George is considered the Godfather of the zombie film genre. I'd love to see you two watch his first three zombie films at some point (Night, Dawn, and Day). And just so you know, the original film is in the public domain. So, you could actually upload the entire thing to KZbin without having to worry about copyright. The 1990 remake of _Night of the Living Dead_ is great too. It also happens to have my personal favorite scene of any zombie movie, or horror movie in general.

Evil Dead comics are... Quite something. There are adaptations of each of the first three films, some making minor changes, some making major changes, some realizing a specific cut of the film. And there are a handful of Evil Dead 2 spin-off/pseudo sequel comics, a lot of them being very hard to get a hold of and seeing Ash go up against a bunch of fictional characters like Dracula, Santa, the Martians, and even some real people like... Deadite Hitler? Those are specifically in the "Revenge Of" line of Evil Dead 2 comics, which do tie into the main Evil Dead 2 comics. Then there are A LOT of Army of Darkness comics, the continuity of which can be quite confusing, as a lot of the comics reference a bunch of other comics but also apparently exist in separate universes (which is a thing the comics get into, but I found it unnecessary). There are also a handful of Army of Darkness crossovers with other characters under the Dynamite label, and some being collaborations with other comic labels like IDW or Devil's Due Publishing. Hell, there's a Marvel Zombies crossover and TWO Freddy vs Jason vs Ash crossover produced by DC's Wildstorm imprint that are basically unavailable because they don't print those anymore (probably due to rights issues). There's also a crossover with another Sam Raimi original, Darkman. The crossovers are sometimes in the same continuity as the mainline Army of Darkness comics, and other times they're completely disconnected. But anyone who's seen the films knows that the continuity of Evil Dead has always been confusing. So of course the comics make it more confusing. And let's not even get into the games.

Secondly, Memento is still Christopher Nolans best film (Following was not feature length, it doesnt count!) As opposed to most if not all other “twist” movies, this one has actually great re-watchability to try and piece together the plot in the correct order. Just my two cents. Cheers!

Hello guys. I hope you also want to watch the second movie of this series, the best of all (the third, "Army of Darkness" is also good, but less than the second): a lot of fun, with horror and comedy well mixed! Small warning (NO SPOILERS): the second movie begins with a recap of the first, but with slightly different actors and plot. This was explained by Bruce Campbell himself (the leading actor of the trilogy) because the producer of the first movie didn't agree with the producer of the second for the copyrights, so in the second movie they couldn't use the old footage and they had to turn everything over again from the beginning. To avoid casting 4 other actors for a few minutes of filming (only Bruce Campbell remained from the old cast, as he was part of the production of both movies) they preferred to hire only one actress and make it seem as if the first movie was based only on a couple and not on 5 friends. From the moment "evil" comes upon Ash at dawn the real second movie begins. Bruce Campbell defines the second movie as a "requel" because, in his opinion, it's neither a reboot nor a sequel, but a sort of mix of the two. He recommends considering the beginning of the second movie precisely from the moment, as I wrote before, in which he's taken by "evil" at dawn, in the forest, and is twirled. I hope I have clarified this thing well enough, which many people (who don't know about this copyrights thing) cannot explain. P.S.: I'm always fascinated by the fact that this first movie cost $375k to produce and earned just under $30m (with only $2.6m in the US, almost being called a flop at home, but a success throughout the rest of the world). XOXO from Bologna, northern Italy.

It sounds strange but the 2nd movie is definitely the story continuing where the first movie ended.

@@pressman1788 I get where you're coming from, but Raimi and Campbell have both pretty much admitted that the second movie is a soft reboot. There was a weird rights issue and Raimi wanted to do the first movie over now that they had a bigger budget. It's kind of both a reboot and a sequel.

Another great reaction! Can't wait for you two to watch the sequel!

You have to watch the sequels! The second is funny and the third (Army of Darkness) is hilarious.

If you’re looking for some movies from first time directors American Beauty from Sam Mendes is great. I think it won the Oscar for best picture. The Shawshank Redemption from Frank Darabont is a classic. Gone Baby Gone by Ben Affleck is really good. Blood Simple by the Coen Brothers. Ex Machina by Alex Garland and Reservoir Dogs by Tarantino.

You guys just have to see part 2 and AOD, highly recommended.

Steven Spielberg's first movie is 'Duel' from 1971 is worth a watch. It was made for TV, so it's no Evil Dead. 🤢😉

There is a "making of" documentary for this film that I think you should watch. It's here on youtube somewhere. The whole cast had a miserable time. For example, the girl who played Ashe's girlfriend scratched her back up good when Bruce dragged her out of the house. Sam Raimi definitely did not put "safety first" when he made this movie.

It's not his first movie I don't think, but Dead Alive from Peter Jackson is an experience. One of the most insane gorefests ever made.

Evil dead and Dead Alive (Braindead), must be most gruesome gore films by Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson (lord of the rings), + fun horror comedy Bad Taste is a Peter Jackson classic.

You should definitely watch Army of Darkness now that you have seen the 1st.

I first saw this when I was far too young to see it and was trying to watch Dawn of the Dead instead. There’s tons of stuff I could say about this one. But I’ll say this it was the movie that invented the.” video nasty.” in England, causing them to ban a bunch of videotapes in the 80s

If you're looking for some interesting "first films" then check out Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles and Braindead aka Dead Alive. Peter Jackson's first 3. Pee Wee's Big Adventure - Tim Burton's first movie and Danny Elfman's first movie score. Reservoir Dogs - Quentin Tarantino's first movie. Night of the Living Dead - George Romero's first film and the godfather of all modern zombie films. Tom Savini made his directorial debut doing the 1990 remake. Both are worth your time.

Another "first-time director" film is Pee Wee's Big Adventure by Tim Burton.

You can understand why this movie was banned and labelled as a video nasty. xx

Whooooa, that's pricey! I keep meaning to read the comics! Or watch the show! I've been told by so many people it's fantastic.

I couldn't find a better place to put this, but have you guys watched The Walking Dead? Of not, it would make for some amazing reactions.
