@@vintageaudioaddict i do. Im down to 3 vintage receivers currently. The marantz, a sony str v5, and a sansui 8080db. That Problem with the power and transformer. I have a similar problem on a Pioneer SX-939 I am restoring right now. I get a bright dim bulb when turned on but if I unhook the two red wires from the power transformer to the power board light goes out. Obvious I had a short some where on the power board. Going to be a run down to find it.
@vintageaudioaddict

You'll find the issue. Using that dim bulb tester you have no worries about damaging your SX-939 while you troubleshoot the problem.

Hi Chris, thank you for these excellent videos, I can only imagine the amount of work it takes. I was wondering if I can ask your opinion on the risk of buying expensive vintage equipment. When does a piece of equipment become too high of a risk, or is there always a way to repair something? For example I recently bought a mint condition fully functional Mark Levinson No.32 preamp for $10000, my dream preamp. It is however pushing 20 odd years, am I playing with fire? Are there components in these equipment that can't ever be fixed should they fail. I contacted Mark Levinson and they discontinued support for parts for this product in 2008.
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict Жыл бұрын
First of all I'd love any piece of Mark Levinson. It's just never happened. Congrats on yours. For me, vintage audio is just something I really like. I'm not concerned if the value goes up, down or even if it breaks. Old electronics do break and that's just part of it. If you got your dream preamp, enjoy it. Probably your No. 32 will still be operating fine for many more years. If someday your No 32 does break most likely it can be repaired. Enjoy!

Nice unit and great repair job. When I opened my Marantz 2220b I noticed that the plastic bulb holder was broken. Probably heat from the original incandescent lamps. I used cool blue LED lamps, so hopefully it wont get any worse. And I'm hoping the new vellum paper won't yellow again. I have been using Deoxit D5 on contacts and F5 on volume and balance controls. Does that sound right to you? Thanks!

I appreciate this video so much. I never have good luck, but I still keep trying. My question is, in the beginning when you replaced the soft start resistor I think that is what you called it…there were two resistors, and it looked like you replaced it with three. Can you tell us why?
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes, there are now three resistors instead of two. One was to replace the open resistor. The other two resistors were installed in parallel to control the fan speed. Those two replaced the original resistor. This was a mod to slow up the built in fan a little for less noise but still provide plenty of air movement.

Subscribed from Australia. I had one of these but like all 70's electronics they sounded terrible compared to modern technology. That amp stage has a damping factor of 60. Modern quality analogue stereo amps are more like 800 damping factor. I bought the 2500 here at a deceased estate for AU$200.00 in 2005 and sold it in 2010 for AU$6,000.00 It was working perfectly but just sounded awful. The fact these needed a fan says it all. My daily driver is a 2018 Rotel RB 1582MKII rated at 200W/channel into 8 ohms. I bought it new and it sounds absolutely gorgeous! Cheers.@@vintageaudioaddict

I thought vintage Marantz receivers were worth so much because they were built so well. Skylabs Audio keeps saying Marantz receivers are expensive because they were built like a tank (Maybe like a Russian tank). Better off with a Sony or JVC from the 1990's for your music listing needs. Much cheaper and with less problems.
