I went to the outpost after watching this video, drove 2+ hrs to get there. The equipment is off the hook, so much great stuff!!! The owner is nice and the tech, that also builds his own tube amps, is very helpful and great to talk to. I highly recommend this store. I was impressed once I walked inside. But pulling up, the building looks run down and sketchy. That’s also part of its charm.

I used to go there every week with my dad when i was 13 (im 18 now) because my dads a DJ and he’d strike deals with the owner. and my dad told me he recently went and the entire place was near empty. Barracks Trading Post was a constant stop for me when I lived in NJ. Not just vintage HiFi, but also used pro gear. It originally started as a military surplus store in a cabin-looking building across from Garden State Park; and slowly morphed into surplus electronics.

I used to talk to the owners' boss over the years in the 90s. We were both into the industrial water treatment business, and his son was related to Jay of "Jay & Silent Bob" fame. They used to have an autographed movie poster in the store. I bought some scientific instruments from them way back in the 70s when they were a surplus electronics store. After a fire burned down some stores around them they seemed to degenerate into a store that sold cheap used crap. They also had a sister store up route 130 around Trenton. I remember that store once had a pair of Cerwin-Vega Sensurround W-theater horns for sale. It looks like they have re-invented themselves as purveyors of vintage electronic equipment. However, I would bet that none of that equipment has been seriously refurbished. Go to Mort's TV in Levittown, across the river, instead.

Barracks Trading Post is no secret if you live in New Jersey! As of 5 years ago when I lived there, there was also one in Bordentown and New Brunswick. I've been to all 3, lots of times. It's worth the trip to go and see the others. The only trouble is that their prices are too high, so I stopped going there, then I moved out of NJ.

The BIC Formula 6 to the left of the Acoustat @22:00 were a rare treat to see. I used to wish I had them when I was a kid seeing them at the stores. They looked so cool with the grills off and VENTURI lettering over the ducts.

Not to be rude....but that rusty leaky looking acoustical tile ceiling is pretty scary for a stereo store....but hey, it gives it Jersey character. I'm an ex-trucker - love Jersey. Edit : Wow, that's a destination kinda place; cool old unique stuff. P.S. I have the 1975 Onkyo TX-4500 - the gold standard- no wood on the side. In fact, you told me to pull it out of storage and get it goin' . I did. She's diamonds.(after some work). My 92 yr. old mom listens to my TX-2500 in her studio. Thx for the tour. Very cool.

My heart was broken recently. A vintage shop close to me that mainly sells vinyl had a huge collection on vintage audio. I stopped in yesterday, and it was all gone. The owner ( that used to be my car audio factor rep back in the 90s) now in his late 70s told me he put it all in storage because it wouldn't sell. He also doesn't believe in selling online, but I told him I'd buy the 3 storage units full of equipment. He told me it's just junk, and he doesn't want to deal with it. I also told him I would work for commission testing and selling, but he's still not interested. Either he has enough money or just doesn't care. I hope that one day I will see the equipment again as he had some very rare pieces. He said to me, " Nobody wants this old crap it's worthless." Don't waste your time. My fingers are staying crossed.

@theclearsounds3911 Yes, his prices were a bit high on some items, but very reasonable on others to the point I could find them new homes and make a profit to buy more stuff I didn't need. The other thing is that there isn't a whole lot of vintage equipment around my area and even fewer people who are interested in it. He also has rooms stacked ceiling to floor of old rare video games and components as well as vintage music memorabilia he hasnt looked at in years. He does quite well selling vinyl and vintage clothing, so I guess he's content. He told me to just keep checking back with him, so hopefully, I'll get him to give in one day. I'd much rather see equipment being enjoyed than going to waste collecting dust. Fingers crossed.

Heath-Kit was a DIY deal whereas they sent you the parts, frame and a schematic for the many different types of electronics they produced, you assembled it at home! My dad was an engineer for Western Electric/Lucent and made one back in the late 1950's or early 1960's. I'm not sure when as I'm the youngest child but I remember the tuner, amp, pre-amp all working when I was a little kid in the early 1970's! He had later bought an 8-track and record-player to complete the rig, they were both from Radio-Shack I believe (long time ago), the amp was a 25 watt tube-set and was a normal stereo arrangement, I think the pre-amp had a secondary out-put for another power amp.

Wow, that looks like a gold mine! I have seen only one Sansui G22000, that was at the main store of the company where I used to work when I was 17/18 years old (Sun TV and Appliances.) I saw that and lots more (the store where I worked had those G series receivers, up to the G9000, which I had the privilege of hooking up.) It was almost like Christmas when new equipment came in, and my boss allowed me to open and set up new receivers/hifi stuff! Truly a dream job, I miss those days.

Best pack a lunch for a visit in that place. I got the bug 50 years ago @ 15 years old. JVC 30 WPC receiver, Thorens Turntable and 8 inch 2-way Realistic floor Speakers. Seems I traded the JVC for A Sherwood to gain Tape Monitor features to run a used TEAC table top cassette I acquired.

Toshiba like Hitachi was mostly a "Heavy Industries" company. In the 1970's these huge Japanese heavy industry companies \ defense contractors let their engineers flex their muscles resulting in first rate Toshiba and Hitachi receivers that had an almost military \ industrial look. Inside you'll see that Hitachi & Toshiba often used in house electronics unless quality commercial off the shelf components were available. It's often said that Hitachi was a poor man's Pioneer and Toshiba was a poor man's Sansui. Toshiba and Hitachi weren't lesser build quality it's just they did not have the same elite name recognition so they sold for less. If you see a good looking Toshiba or Hitachi receiver GRAB EM! Mitsubishi backed Onkyo when they made cheap garbage, and then they pulled out, so Onkyo was on it's own. Onkyo then made the TX-4500 as a last gasp, "better make it perfect" kinda thing, and it pulled them out of the fire. Got one, and that's the story, as I know it.

MB QUART home hi-fi speakers are excellent. Distribution failed, but the quality and design top notch. I have a pair similar to those. They feature a hybrid acoustic suspension cabinet and matched Titanium tweeters. Very good soundstage, depth, and transparency.

That guitar is actually a gibson ES-330 and is the least desirable variation of them with the single p-90 pickup in the middle. An es335 has humbucker pickups and is semi hollow, a 330 is full hollow with p-90s. What were they asking on it? It looks to have been refinished as well

Not EMT at all! OHMs! Walsh drivers. Love them! Omni-directional. Single driver inverted cone. Different materials used as you go down the cone. The voice coil on top modulates the cone. The wave is sent down the cone. The wavelength of the tone will determine where on the cone it resonates and projects from. The higher the frequency, the higher up the come it will resonant with. Then cabinet loads the lows. Amazing, unique design. Power hungry. The company still exists and I think will rebuild these. New versions of the inverted Walsh system they call the "Walsh Tall Speaker" series is available from them.

Those Ohm speakers are the model F but could also be model A's? Both looked similar but A's were available in early 1970's and F's came in later 1970's. They used a Walsh driver (single cone) that radiated sound in 360 degree pattern, treble at the top and bass at bottom. The first truly "omnidirectional" design. Ohm speakers were, and still are Made in Brooklyn, NY. Ohm speakers were available ONLY at Tech Hifi stores. That Trading Post is boss, I could spend hours there, like a kid in a freakin' candy store. Thanks for the tour.

Another nice tour. You actually mentioned the Yamaha CR-620 instead of skipping it like you usually do with Yamaha gear that shows up in your tour videos. Sanyo actually made some very nice gear (especially their Plus series) in the late 1970s. They were late to the game, and just as they jumped in, the home stereo market was starting to decline. A lot of the gear you were showing was from the 1960s, not the 1970s.

Remember DCM's Time Frame line of speakers? They were "Transmission Line" design. Ranging from a 2-way 250 to a 3- way 1000. They were very under rated, usually sold in the " Big Box " stores, and sort of snubbed by many audiophiles. I had a pair of 750's and I wish I still had them. The Walsh OHM were "Omni- Directional" mid and tweeter, with a down firing woofer(?). Kinda like the MBL Radialstrahler's, execpt at 1/350 th of the cost. Got a spare second? Look up MBL speakers and components, it'll blow your mind!!$$$$$$$$$$$!!

On one of these road trips, you need to interview the old guy in the back room who gets everything into shape for resale. These guys have forgotten more than we'll ever know about the gear. BTW, here in lower Ct I found such a guy working out of his basement, off grid. He's an 80 year old retired broadcast engineer and all he does is vintage audio. He went through a Pioneer Spec 1 for me a few weeks ago.... and I waited around 3 weeks for an appointment.... he's that busy.

I live in Northwest Florida and there's a guy who sells stuff on eBay who lives about an hour away from me in lower Alabama. Anyway I ended up buying an old NAD integrated from him and he was going to ship it to me but I asked him" is there anyway I can just come and pick it up"? Anyway he said sure and gave me his number to text him. Couple days go by and I go over to meet him to pick it up and he tells me to meet him at the warehouse, I'm thinking okay sure. The warehouse turned out to be a very large storage unit, like one of those ones that people get to put RVs in, I'm talking 80 ft deep by 60 ft wide, a large storage unit. And he tells me to come in and he'll grab it. When I walk in the store room he has everything everywhere. I'm talking every vintage Marantz receiver that you can think of every vintage sansui and pioneer and Yamaha even realistic. He's got at least 400 turntables in there and an equal amount of speakers. The place is so loaded with vintage Hi-Fi that you literally have to walk by turning sideways and shuffling through some of the narrow aisles he has in this storage room. He gets the NAD and hands it to me and I go out front and I asked him" what's with all the hi-fi, I didn't know anybody ever had so much" and he told me that he has been a collector for a long time and over the last decade he's been selling stuff on eBay on a regular basis. Basically I was amazed by what I saw in there and some of the vintage variety and also the rarity of some of the pieces, like he had a sansui 33000, I'm talking about pieces that you never see or that you only ever read about, he had everything.

I've watched a number of your videos and noticed there's very little Luxman and Thorens turntables in your videos. I have a Luxman L-430 amp and a Thorens TD-160 turntable. Do you see much of these two brands out there? Seems like Luxman especially is kinda rare in the vintage stereo world.

Barrack's is the place i grew up there coming from p.a. every weekend with my Dad .Hey you need to go to Mort's tv video in p.a. , you weren't to far from them if you never been there. They have 80% hi end equipment and there on ebay and have everything ,you'd be blown away. I grew up at that Barrack's trading post in Maple shade New Jersey , made many many deals there with my Dad up until about 2013. So many memories of the places that were there there were two more audio shops down the road one called the Record shop all hi end equipment. Barrack's had two other locations one in new Brunswick and one in Bordentown Great Video as usual !

I remember The Record Shop just up the road. Funny thing was that they didn't sell records, at least not after the early 80s when I frequented them. They only sold hi-end equipment; mostly Sony ES. I don't know why, but one day they closed up overnight many years ago, and I believe the building is still there, vacant after all these years. Every Sunday they had a full-page ad in the newspaper showcasing their latest equipment.

Wow so much stuff! So much I recognize and there was so much I didn't! I saw in the back their Pro stuff, they had a Fender portable PA. The Deluxe version actually used Bose speakers in custom cabinets. Actually worked pretty good until the magnet fell off the woofers. Someone dropped it... I wouldn't mind seeing more of the Pro stuff 😃 I think I saw those Ohm speakers in my dads Popular Mechanics books. Ill have to go look it up now, but if I can recall, the sound waves travel down that "Cone" shaped driver like ripples. Another great video of an amazing store. Wait, was that a bloody hand next to the reverb unit near the front of the store?

14:48 I have that receiver sitting 10 feet from me now in perfect condition except mine is a STA 64 with Quadravox. 16 watts per channel but has some of the sweetest sound.

@@LennyFlorentine Well....... my main system has 2300 watts or what I like to say 2.3 kilowatts (lol). I had a Realistic STA 64 receiver I bought some 40+ years ago (my first) and lost in a flood. A couple years back I went out and bought everything I had when I was a kid (my first system) and refurbished it all the best I could just to see where I have gone over the years. Was pretty shocked how good the Realistic sounded and how loud it would get for just 16 watts per channel. And the look... the whole face is brushed aluminum with a walnut case for the body, the lights, the weighted tuner knob.....

Correct. I just restored a pair. Sanded them down and oiled them. The walnut looks spectacular. Sealed the surrounds and recapped them.

The Heathkit AJ 1510 is an absolutely premium top of the heap digital FM tuner and it will blow away the tuners in almost anything in that room.

You showed the Ohm Walsh F’s…wish you heard them. They are an omnidirectional speaker with a single driver (transmission line) and no crossover. The high frequencies emit from the driver closest to the voice coil, while the lowest frequencies radiate from the entire driver. They are not very efficient, but sound fantastic when set up properly.

Wow a an Akai 81D 8track! These players will make your tapes sound the best next to the 82D with glass heads. Most say 8tracks are junk but these recorders will change your opinion. Built like a tank!

i´m putting a SAE two system complete to use it and i would like that stereo tuner for my amplifier and cassette deck , duo B luxman receiver with crystal plastic push buttons what a trip, only rare stuff, i have the toshiba system with amplifier to meet that tuner bought all for 300€ in mint condition 5 years ago, cassette deck and turntable and speakers included one owner since new, those meters are in the amplifier as power meters the standart before the big needle vu meters, but Toshiba used it till the end of the 70´s, have a radio cassette player with it too but the blender was the best i had was from 73 bought in Africa ,never found another so good ,even in professional material

Lenny I too was/am a pro wrestling fan and rented and seen 100s of pro wrestling vids back in the day. I would have been a kid in a candy store. I am currently researching to get a stereo system….not sure if I am going vintage or modern but it will be receiver, CD, EQ, pair of speakers & pair of subs. Granted I live in an apartment in CT. I have and always have been a CD guy. My birthday is in March and I will be turning 50 so playing CDs on my XBOX 1X through TV speakers not a great idea…it works but I feel I am do to have a system that I had in the early to mid 90s dubbing my stereo system 2.0 or 3.0
