People are always correcting you when you're not even wrong. Wait,@@_dan_gutierrez are you serious? "He did it backwards" as in started at the end, instead of the beginning... whatever you've convinced yourself is wrong with this statement is nitpicking at best. Even if using a temporal word is _technically_ "better," the first one is not incorrect, so only a pompous douchecanoe would ever "correct" someone for that. The Captain seems to be aware of that, but you-- unless this is a joke.

My favorite thing about Holly is that the character was initially supposed to be a skeptical satire of religion and superstition, but as the channel evolved, the character is being used to to comment on the condescending know-it-all-ism that can be found within the skeptic community. More reasons why this channel is genius (and socially aware).

I've watched this episode a few times now... and I've got to say... as a writer myself... It's masterfully touching and genuinely bittersweet. That's so hard to pull off when you have larger than life characters who are purposely camp. All your work is so good, but I thought it was worth complimenting execution of this episodes narrative. Bravo.

I came here looking to the comments looking for similar thoughts,. It, even in it's small space, is actually well written. I am incredibly interested in the bridges built between two diametrically opposed forces,, it is really well done. Capt Disillusion and Holly Gram also nail the parts, and it is two people playing a camp trope, very well.

Each marble has a slightly different bounce, with color coding. Red bounces the most, blue is middling, green being the least bounciful. Drop them each the same height onto an angled surface, catch them in different chutes. The rebound distance/angle sorts the high, middle and low bounciful balls apart readily. This doesn't sort by color, per se, but it would sure look like it does! For real color-based, non-electronic sorting: Each ball acts as a tiny lens, to focus bright light onto a bi-metallic strip through a colored filter. These strips bend one way or the other, depending how hot they get. The filters are 'band-pass', they pass light of certain colors, block all others. Red-pass, green pass, blue-pass. The strip, on being heated by the filtered light, would bend, actuating some kind of trap-door, allowing the marble to pass. Or not. A red marble in the green 'trap' would not activate the strip, so no bending, marble rolls past the trap. Or the other way: A red marble in a red 'trap' would get passed along, red marble in green 'trap' drops out? Not green sensor? Options! So, each strip responds only when a marble is in place to act as a lens and the marble passes right color of light to get through the filter. It wouldn't be terribly fast, but as long as there enough light to activate the strips, it runs.

Johny (yes this is a reply to a 3 year old comment) but I would suggest you switch off the subtitles. Only if you hear something you do not quite got, turn them on for that particular word/phrase. I am also not a native speaker, in fact English is my 3rd language, but watching it with subs just makes it harder to pick up things. Like I was always asking people to repeat things because I couldn't hear what they said. But without subtitles... after a month or so I did much much better.

What I'm somewhat surprised was not made more clear here was the distribution Holly mentioned. It's not remotely that flat, it's an obvious bell curve, very reliably. The "marbles" should have been heaped into a hill-like shape (possibly burying some bottom pegs) in the middle, with just a handful at either end. That alone debunks the video. There is actually a very small chance that random events build order, because what we _feel_ looks random is an _artificially_ even distribution, while pure randomness includes clusters, gaps and even parts of patterns which eventually, with enough attempts, can form anything. It's that thing where if you put enough chimps in front of enough typewriters, one of them will eventually write War and Peace or the Bible. It is not at all likely, but possible that the random cluster of marbles is color-sorted by their random interaction with the pegs.

Watching it I remembered hearing you in an interview that you once wanted to make features. I think if you found yourself a good writer, a good director, and you personally produced and managed the VFX, you could make this story a feature. Anyways, even as a short it was really compelling. @Professional Pretender I do not believe that statement is accurate. Also in the current year of 2019, it is much more appropriate to say a member of the LGBTQIA+ community who identifies with the male gender he was assigned at birth, and exhibits attraction to other men who identify with the male genders they were asssigned at birth. This comment could be accurate though if you exhibited some sort of sarcasm in making this statement, and if the definition of gay you were using is the adjective which according to Merriam Webster means happily excited or merry. Because Captain Disillusion's lore is not a merry or excited one. The lore involved in this video is actually a rather sad and unfortunate one. From what I've been able to deduce from the few other videos I've seen, Captain Disillusion divorced the woman, Holly, seen in the video (who he has a son with BTW). She was once evil in nature, and spent previous trying to get back with the Captain. She's losing her powers, isn't really evil anymore, and has settled on having a friendshop with her ex-lover. If this was the intent you were trying to convey in this single three letter word, then I applaud you.

I did a similar animation: Huge bowl of colored balls dumped out onto a table littered with stationary objects. The balls spelled out a personal greeting after they stopped moving. Ran the simulation, using particles, to determine the 'rest' phase or after shot. In the rest phase, I then used a perspective-based paint-brush tool to write the message [Happy Birthday Ellen!] on the top surfaces of some balls. The coolness factor was that the painted balls had message pigment on only one side! Some balls had only slivers of paint, due to other balls partly blocking the paint. With the balls 'back' in the bowl, all you see is random balls, some partly painted. I love this stuff! BTW, another fun thing is to project an image onto the 'rest phase' balls, this way the picture 'comes to be' from a swirl of random bits. Think of some recent movie title sequences; random bits 'fall together' to make a word or image.

the give away for me was the fact they don't bounce in a realistic way (really a lot closer to the approximated physics of a video game)
@Nebulaoblivion

Yeah physics can be glitchy in a game engine running a realtime physics simulation, but for something like this where its baked in advanced, you can set the physics timescale and everything ahead of time to make it more realistic. Even if you forgot to do that, and didnt want to re-bake it, you could just make it play faster. I think the captain is right when he said that the author just didnt set the gravity or physical properties (mass, friction, bounciness.) correctly, or rather, he put them at values necessary to get the balls in every ending bracket.

Because the stream of marbles is divided significantly into two streams, they might fall into a distribution that is the sum of two binomial distributions (bell shaped curves). Although, because the bounce off the elliptical block spreads out each of the two streams a bit, the curves might end up a little less pointy and a bit more spread out, but the varying trajectories of the marbles after bouncing off the ellipse would not be too big an effect because they would get channeled (or if you're British channelled) in-between the square prisms underneath the brunt of the two new distributions, squeezing them a bit "whew; long sentence". Furthermoreorless the distribution of the marbles after that first bounce is complicated because they are bumping into each other as well, and seeing as I don't particularly want to google "videos of balls bouncing into each other" to collect data on it I'ma gonna leave that shift term as a constant. One final thing to consider: wait the final thing? Like ever? Am I going to explode after this?...... Yes, moving on. The edge of the distribution (this one is weird, it does have edges unlike a true "normal distribution") reaches the edge of the array of widgets, I mean, square prisms (diamond prisms?) very quickly and bounce off that, which sort of mirrors and then overlays the bits of the distribution that get there, only in a more annoying to calculate continuous way. That last reason is why it is spread out so evenly at the end. That and perhaps because if they did not, the person who made this may not have liked the look and may have tweaked the program a tad to get a new bunching until it looked nice and even. Wow, look at all those run on sentences, sorry, about that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's because it's not a Galton board. Just because it looks like one, doesn't mean it *is* one. Something constructed with pegs like this would likely have an inverse bell curve as the slopes of the pegs would give more left/right momentum than a bounce.

@AS - 08RS - Sir John A Macdonald Sr PS (1540) Whoops, I didn't actually consider the inital peg :D Although I would have to ask then, if the shape of the pegs do not influence the pattern and still function as a galton board, then relative to each ball, wouldn't it effectively just be a galton board on each side and form a curve on either side?
